The Prince Phantom 93P is a gift to us from TW - My Review/AMA

First off, I have acquired a Prince Phantom 93P and also a Pro100P (edit - I sold the 100P back to TW, the P93 is a far better frame, imo) - Ask me anything.

Yes, there is an existing thread on this frame, but I feel like it may deserve two. I think the RF97 has hundreds, and even Sureshs has multiple tributes,so...yeah.

Anyway- the frame and a quick update on myself. I have not been playing tennis nearly as much as I did last year simply because I have been doing other forms of fitness. But I miss the game and am surrounded by really great players so I wanted to get back out there and play a little more. Last time I played was late January. I share this simply because many may consider a mid size frame too demanding for them - it may be, but if you know how to play (ie - you move your feet after the shot instead of standing there staring at the ball)you may really enjoy this racquet a lot. I play with 4.0 to 5.0 players. Know a few ex D1 college players and low ranked pros here. Also some solid rec players. It really varies. Tonight was har tru with 2 4.0s and one 4.5. I plan to hit with more folks next week, including a really good player who played D1, so this frame will get a workout. I will update as it goes.

First thing is the racquet looks awesome. Plus it has a leather grip, which rules. It's a really thin beam, which I love too. I was thinking this thing would weigh 350+ with a overgrip on it but mine came in at 340 strung (rs lyon 17 at 48#s). The balance is probably 7 pts HL. Whatever it is, I love it.

Does it need a dampener? Nope. I ended up using one, because that is what I am used to and I prefer the feedback and feel with it, but this thing does not vibrate in a bad way at all. If you prefer no dampener, you will be quite happy. Anyway, here's some details on how it plays.

Groundstrokes - Being rusty and playing on har tru is not exactly a recipe for success. Especially considering my racquet of choice has been a Babolat Pure Aero Plus. The +Babs are my jam for when things get really competitive and it's time to bring serious heat. Absolutely great frames. But I go back and forth with feel, and sometimes I wan to use something nice and classic that really drives the ball. The 93P does this. I was thinking it would be too low in power, but this was not the case. I should add that I left the Babs at home today and brought a brand new Phantom Pro100P that I added 4 grams of lead at 12 to. The stock 93P has more power than the leaded up 100P. I would guess the SW is at least in the mid 330s, but it is so well balanced that it just swings smoothly.

Main thing to remember for me when I start playing again is that I need to chill and let the frame do the work. Well, that was easy with this racquet. Light warm up rallying - easy depth on both wings. I was particularly impressed with the 2hbackhand side, as I that is my weaker stroke. I had no issues at all keeping it deep and heavy. The frame is exceptionally solid, but very easy to whip through contact. It plays true to size, imo. Not a 95, but not a 90 either. One standout shot for me was that on wide shots to my forehand side, I could hit heavy returns with seemingly laser placement. So counterpunching with this frame was surprisingly effective due to the high level of accuracy. Trajectory was predictably lower than an open patterned 100, but since the frame is so well balanced, it was not that difficult to whip through the shot and lift the ball over the net. Slice - incredible on both sides. I did not get to use that shot enough, and I look forward to more, as the backhand slice can become a truly effective weapon, and squash shots are equally nasty. Very easy to hit a LeeD hissing down the line slice with a conti grip.

Serve - I had not served in forever, but this frame made it so much easier for me to regain my form and work up to hitting big serves towards the end of the evening. It is so fun to serve with this frame that I did not want to stop. The stand out feature of it is how easy it comes through contact. It was almost effortless to serve flat, slice or topspin. If you enjoy practicing serving, this frame may be worth a purchase just for that reason.

Return - true test of a frame, imo - especially a mid. A great frame combined with solid timing and technique makes returning a low effort activity and this delivered big time. I got to face a pretty decent 4.5 serve which was hitting lumps of har tru and crappy lines and I was still able to hit returns that put him back on his heels. Blocking serves back was truly where I enjoyed it the most. Just put the racquet out and the ball lands a foot inside the line with enough underspin to start a rally and not set you up to watch a winner go by.

Volley - Simply did not volley enough yet to tell you much there. But when I did, it was extremely solid and pinpoint. I will update when I get more time at the net

Feel - Main thing we care about is how does it feel? Well to me, it feels absolutely great. It reminds me of a hybrid between a Head PC600 and a Wilson Pro Staff. It's more Head than Wilson, but it has that firmer feel of the Wilson and plays like that too. I really believe most people will be quite happy with how this racquet feels on contact. It's got that rare ideal balance between crisp and plush/muted that most players will really, really enjoy.

String - string it low. Full poly at 45#s is great. I would go with 17 gauge, personally.

Ok, this was really long. The short version is if you like mids - buy it.If you like classic feel - buy it. If you always were intrigued by a mid but are not sure if your game is good enough - buy it. The worst thing that happens is you have a fantastic frame that will make you a better player sitting in the bag next to your Babolats. That's my plan, at least.

Nope. I am happy about that. Mine came strung at exactly 340, so I saw no need to lighten it. I love the feel of the leather grip, so I was not looking forward to taking it off.
Great read by the way! I was seriously impressed with serving with this. You are right-all serves too.

How is the feel compared to the PP100P? How does it compare to some of other classics you have played with?

It has a more direct feel than the 100P. The 100P is more open and you can feel that box beam flex, but when you tag the sweet spot it is not as rich as the 93P. The 93P is not as soft as the PC600, but it really feels so nice that it doesn't matter too much to me. It is closest to my PT280. Imagine that with a little bit of Wilson's firmness in there to make the RA difference. Basically a PT280 but a little firmer. I'd like to hear what others say, as strings do make a difference. I am very familiar with the RS lyon in mine, as that is all I have used for close to 2 years.

Wow, that's high praise. Sounds like my type of frame.

youve probably been feel-robbed for a long time w the babs. i love the results i get w a babs, i really do ... but theres no substitute for that feel you get on a well-struck ball with a proper flat beam frame.

and that predictable control from a tighter pattern ...

The PP100P has a 59RA and the 93P a 61RA. Which racquet feels more flexible to you? How much more spin do you get with the 100P over the 93P? There's a big difference in string spacing between the two and the 93P is stiffer, at least on paper with a much denser pattern. It would seem even if the 93P was easier to generate RHS to overcome all that and get decent spin, it would be a string sensitive racquet since since only one frame characteristic aids in spin.

Dang tempted to try this, love my TT95 and this seems really similar to my Angell TC95 18x20 which is 345 grams, 337 sw

Logged an hour and half on hard courts today. Frame continues to play great. I liked it more today with the poly probably in the low 40s now. I'd suggest 45#s or less.

I have zero issues with the racquet. It really has no weakness that I can see. Any mistakes I made were on me. I never felt held back by the frame or that it was making the game harder for me. It actually has helped me get my game back rather fast since I can't cheat and do lazy wrist flicks on defense. It's almost like having a coach in your hand, but it rewards with a bigger sweetspot than a PC600 or PS85, and I was able to win the majority of competitive points I played this AM. Additionally, I had no problems with power. I could hit through people when needed, or even more fun, I could hit very precise spots that the opponent just could not get to. Incredible balance between placement and power for me.

I’d be interested in this comparison too! Sounds like more juice behind the serves?
And how is the power level of the 93P compared with the PP100P?

Much higher for me. I leaded my PP100P with 4 grams at 12 and it still did not have the power of the stock 93P. The P3P is not a power frame by any means, but it has a lot of plow behind it, so if you know how to hit, you should not have any issues.

Absolutely more on the serve. Not really a contest for me. The 93P is balanced so well that it just comes through on it's own and really makes serving easy. If you like serving power flats, you will have a smile on your face. I do those now and then, and usually am more of a top/slice guy and I really loved how this frame was on those too.

The 100P was quite good on extreme angled slice, but that was about it for me.

Power Player - if you ever hit with the PS 85 I am curious if this has more or less power than that.

I did but it has been a while and I don't want to say something inaccurate. I recall that the power is similar but this frame is much easier to use. For example, I had a PC600 and I was able to hit really big forehands with it when I was set up properly and really grooving. Same thing with the 93P, but I can also hit 70% shots with more net clearance and depth over and over again. This frame really encourages that relaxed, 70% hitting and then you can put away short balls with no problems. It basically provides plenty of power to play highly efficient tennis.

In terms of flex, they feel a bit similar, but I would say the 93P flexes more like a prestige and the 100P I can feel it flex more in the throat. The 100P has that box beam flex which feels nice, but it doesn't transfer power to the ball like with the 93P. The 100P plays more like a frame that massages the ball from angle to angle where the 93 lets you dictate the point however you want. I prefer the feel of the 93P. The more I use it, the more I like it. It has that loud crack that I like on contact and it has that plush, or deep feeling sweetspot that all the classic frames have. I also do not notice any dead spots on the frame where the ball just dies.

I feel like you are overthinking the spin part. I use a semi western grip and can generate heavy spin with about anything. So to maximize that, I use the Bab Pure Aero. All I can say is that the Bab Pure Aero is a very easy frame to use and brush the ball over the net nice and deep. I hit with a guy last night who has played me with the Bab and also the 93P and the shots that jumped at him and threw him off were about even with both frames. The difference is that my technique is probably better with the 93P because I am looking to hit through the ball a little more, so I am more focused on setting up and hitting like I should be doing anyway.

If you need help in the spin department, you have to think about how you want it. Do you want to earn it and get better technique or do you want a frame to give a you a boost? If it is the former, you will love the 93P. It has very tight ball rotation and you can push people back off the baseline with it. But you will need to use proper technique. In the long run, I think this is the better option.

I had the 16x19 TC95, and I really liked it. But the feel of this frame is much better to me. The TC95 felt a bit like an older dunlop. It felt really good, but it didn't have that balance of direct ball feel and plush sweetspot that the 93P does. The 18x20 very likely does though, I never used that one. I had the TC97 18x20 which felt incredibly close to my PT630, but had a little more pop to it.

The specs are probably right in line with what you like. I have a feeling my SW is 333-337 if I had to guess.

Great review. One of the better reviews I have read. I am intrigued by this racquet but have not tried it. However, I have played with the Blade 93, Prestige Mid and the Pro Staff 90 with my favorite being the Prestige Mid (IG). I now play with the Pure Drive Tour. My only issue with the mid frames is I have to be sharp to really play well which is tough these days as I don’t get out as much as I used to especially with my daughter playing competitively in tournaments every other weekend. The other issue is I feel like I am bringing a knife to a gun fight when I do play with these racquets. Most players I play against (I play 4.5 USTA and A1 ALTA if you know Atlanta) are swinging Pure Drive like frames and they get a ton of plow and spin and while I can compete with the mid frames they just don’t give me an edge or that bigger sweet spot for volleys, etc. Don’t get me wrong, I love mid frames and will try this frame but given I don’t train as much on court anymore, etc I am afraid the days of playing with the classic mid frames are gone for me. Again, great review and I am more intrigued now to at least demo the racquet. The 100p sounds interesting as well. Did you ever play with the Prestige Mid? Any comparisons you can recall to the Prince 93P?

Thank you, and yeah I know what you are saying. I am not going to stop using Babs or bringing them to the court by any means, but I have found that so far, I have not had one moment where I feel the need to switch out to one. In fact, I was able to hit right through a Pure drive wielder today. Granted, he played a really nice, cerebral game more based on shotmaking and placement than power, but I was able to throw off his timing from the first shot across the net and jump all over it from there.

When it comes to plow, the 93P has more than my Pure Aero plus. The Pure Aero plus is a pop machine. I can hit nice and thin and the ball goes deep and kicks up, but if I am looking to plow and drive the ball more, that is when I have to be real careful and pick my spots due to the pop and wide string spacing. The Babolat is definitely easier to use, but the drop down to the 93P is not nearly as sharp as I expected. I can relax and just let it do work, and I like that.

Basically, I thought the same - my mid days are done, but it appears that is not the case. Even if I go back to using the Babs more, I still will use this frame because it basically fixes my technique quickly. The Babs are so easy that if I come out and am not hitting clean, sometimes I can't figure it out until it is too late in the match. It's easy to play tight with super power frames while the 93P encourages looseness.

Yeah I had a Prestige Mid - PC600. It was one of the best frames I ever used in terms of feel and enjoyment, and I sold it for some dumb reason (probably because I hated stringing it). The 93P is easier for me to use and the weight and balance is better. I also find the power level to be higher. All the cool things about the PC600 - sweet feel, serving bliss, fast reactive shotmaking, are all in the 93P.

Main reason I am considering competing with the 93P in the near future over the Babs is simply because the serve is so good with them. The rest of the shots are more about my movement then anything else. If I am dead tired or gettiing flogged, sure I will try a Bab (going to get a Pure Drive tour Plus so the switch is a little easier), but I would love to just play with this frame as much as I can and enjoy it.

Dude, you're killing me. I am a long time Prince mid user (mostly diablo mid) and have recently moved into a more "forgiving" frame, the Yonex SV98. I tried just about every other racquet in the players/modern players realm and found the Yonex to provide a similar ball to the diablo mid. BUT, there has been some weight of shot missing, particularly on the forehand and my heavy spin serves. I always felt that I hit a nastier ball with the diablo's, but they haven't been made in quite some time and I gave up on getting grommets and new racquets.

I also tried the Phantom 100P, but had similar findings as you, I could swing out of my shoes, but it really did not hit big enough, placement and consistency were great, but I wasn't getting enough free point on serves or weight of shot on groundies, so I gave up on it.

How did you find the trajectory on it? It always amazed me how the diablo gave me a nice natural arch to the ball with a lot of spin, but not too much like a aero pro. I am very much a driver of the ball, so I rely on the racquet to help with trajectory and the diablo was perfect for me.

Looks like I'll have to try this thing to see how it is.

Trajectory - I was missing low for a while this AM. My first 5 shots were clipping the net until I realized I was being lazy and not getting under the ball. After that, I was fine. I did hit a few shots into the net, but it was my fault not the frame. The biggest test was on approach shots. Getting under and lifting them into a corner is easy because the frame moves so fast through the air. I did not net one approach shot today, which is a real nice sign.

It sounds like the trajectory will be very similar to your Diablo. It is driving and not real high like an Aero Pro.

How does the 93P compare to the TT95? I'm surprised you didn't get enough pop from your PP100P. Would the PP100 be even more anemic since it has a much lower RA? If you've hit with the TT100P, I'd be interested in a comparison.

I hit with the TT95 a long time ago. I remember that I did not like it as much as my Tfight 315 ltd, which I feel was a good comparison. The main thing was that the feel was good, but not mind blowing.

Feel is better on the 93P. Plow is better on the 93P stock. The TT95 was stock and it felt like I needed to swing out my shoes a little more than I prefer. I am sure some lead could fix that, but I love a frame that I don't really need to do much to.

Yeah, the 100P even with the SW at 335+ was just not the dictator of points that the 93P was out of the box. It did not feel like I got much of an advantage using the larger headsize. The smaller headsize felt much more like an advantage in this situation.

Great response. I hear you and agree there are times I have to be careful swinging the PDT. There are days where my control isn’t great and I have to choke up on the frame a bit which robs the power some.

I do want to try this frame and the 100P. I look forward to reading about your experiences with this frame.

Most of us that participate on this forum will appreciate the 93 P because we are dedicated enthusiasts.
However many others won't appreciate it. For example here in Australia Prince is not widely available. The other day I mentioned it to my local tennis shop and I was praising the excellent specs this racquet had and both shop owners mocked me and said, " whose going to play with a 93 these days"', to which I replied, " I would love it"' They then accused me of being such a dinosaur but I know my arm will last longer than their's because I'm not into the light and stuff frames they sell to all the dunderheads.

I'm from Australia. Pay no attention to them, I love small head sized racquets. I am using Yonex 89 which I love it. Don't like oversized one.

@Power Player ,

How's the 93P compare with a weighted up Tecnifibre 315 LTD? Both racquets were modeled after the head pt57, right?

Both are great. The Tec is more head heavy and sluggish once weighted. They both serve incredibly well. The 93P is just weighted to perfectly in stock form that serving is as powerful and easy. I would say the power is about the same, but the plow of the 93P is better.

How does these compare to the 2015 Blade 18x20?

I didn't really like that racquet much at all, and I don't like frames with the balance that close to the head. So I much prefer the 93P. I also think it feels better as well.

I never played the Tour 89. One of my regrets, because that was a frame I wanted to check out. Based on the specs of the 89, I have to think both frames are going to be quite close in power.

Absolutely. Others need to chime in on this thing.

Hit with mine for 1.5 hours of drills today. Feels a little light for me stock. Power does seem low but maybe that'll improve after I add weight. Serves were pretty amazing- good spin along with good accuracy. The thing that stood out for me was the touch. I was able to hit some crazy volleys today, both angles and drops. I had mine strung up with Velocity17/Cream17 @ 50/48. Mine came in at 348g strung w/ OG and dampener. My normal racquet of choice is a PS90 so I had no issues with the head size.

Nice. So the weight is about the same as mine. This is a good sign for the qc.

My frame is playing at 43#s now so that may be a reason i dont find it too low powered. Also compared to the p100p, it hits a lot bigger.

@Power Player have you ever played with the Dunlop MW/HM 200G? Those frames may be closer to the PP93P than the TT95 since the Dunlops have dense 18x20 string patterns and similar flex. I'm very familiar with the Dunlops and could use that as a frame of reference in comparison.

Yes i have. They are not as close to the Prince as the prestige mid is, imo

Man, i am really tempted to pull the trigger on this racquet without demoing it. This thread has me hooked. I've been a Prince player most of my life. I've never found a teacher to replace my prince titanium chang midplus. That was a 95sqin, 14x18, 28" long stick. After retiring this sticks after 14 years, I've played a lot of Babs, currently have 5 aerostorms (2 2011s, 2 2013 prostocks, and 1 2016 USA). The prince only lacked a bit of pace on serve. Other than that, the prince hit a bigger, heavier ball. More forgiving, softer, everything.

My only reservation is the 18x20 pattern. I'll a lefty and play a heavy spin game.
