Coric has been flying under the radar and my research indicates he might have a breakout year on clay. Surprised he's been dominating at IW, but maybe the slow courts suit his game. Coric in 3 and lookout if he does it as he's just building momentum for clay. RBA a much better hard court player, so this would be a big step for Borna Again.

I'm disappointed by how slow these courts are but slow courts in theory suit Coric. Then again they suit RBA as well.

I'm picking Coric. Crushing ARV is an ideal warm up for facing another Spanish clay courter in RBA.

Calling RBA a clay courter is a false label...he has only one of his 8 career titles on clay, his lone MS1000 final was on the fastest HC surface (Shanghai), he just won Dubai (medium fast HC) and his best slam results are 4R across the board. Better to label him Joe Kovic Lite.

He was on fire v. Dimitrov for sure. The only question is whether we get Tabasco Verdasco or Verdasco the Fiasco. Either one could show up on the day.

He usually bombs out after a big victory, so Fritz is the favourite there.

He's got all that...but his game does seem to be on the up. Should rise sharply in the rankings this year.
This week and Miami are key for him to get seeding at RG...currently #47 and roughly 300 points out before some are pared away due to injury. He defends 3R in Miami, a 250 title in Marrakech and QFs at Madrid.

Seeding helps with rapid rises. It will stagnate breakthroughs when it drops to 16 spots in '19.

I don't think reducing the seeding will stagnate breakthroughs. It increases the randomness in draws for everyone, which can help or hinder young or old alike. The draw probably becomes most important for those ranked 17-mid 30's who relied on seeding to preserve their positions through the protection it gave.

We'll have to agree to disagree then. With the new Old School arrangement, an upset of a top 4 seed in 1R could be followed up in 2R with a 17-32 opppnent, which is a harder landing than the current format. Then in 3R it's another possibly tougher test than a random 29-32 player.

RBA took out Delpo in Auckland this year; he's no joke. ARV is definitely not playing nearly as well as 2016-2017 period.

IW is supposed to have the slowest hard courts for some time now. I'm not so sure true high bouncing outdoor hard courts suit RBA. He lit up Nole late in 2016, but those were fast Asian courts. The time of matches at IW is key as evening temps often quite cool which means slow. This match should be in hottest part of the day on court so that may suit RBA a bit more.

Yes that can happen but so can the opposite. You might draw 3 qualifiers in a row, then be drawn to play a top player in the 4th round who got knocked out by someone ranked 17-32. Not everyone can wind up with a tougher draw: it will be tougher for some, easier for others.

Hard to believe Coric can give RBA a near bagel at 6-1! RBA is such a smart player and I kind of amazed at that first set score! I guess everyone can play poorly at times. I know I do all the time! LOL!

Wow. Coric is kicking ass and taking names. Good to see.

He also maybe just matches up well with these sort of players. We'll have to see him against a more offensive player.

I just saw the scoreline for Coric v RBA. Holy crap!
When I watched Coric in Davis Cup play against Shapo, I was impressed. I think Borna is getting his act together and hope he has more great play up his sleeve going forward.
Hats off.

He’s already bageled the Donald and ARV.

When assessing players i don't count any wins over Donald Young.

Nevertheless Coric has been surprisingly impressive so far, a dark horse for the clay season perhaps? I'd started to wonder if he'd ever improve.

Not expecting him to win RG but perhaps a SF at a clay court masters could happen.

I’d go so far as to rank him top 5 in clay right now.

Apparently IW is super slow this year so that could explain his success so far.

That was a surprisingly no holds barred beatdown from Coric on RBA. Is Coric finally rounding into some form at last? Can he be a genuine threat at IW this week?

Coric has got a winnable match against Fritz and could play Kevin Anderson or Pablo Carreno Busta after that. Coric will hope to Busta because he has not won a set against Anderson in three meetings.

Coric is a different player, so if he's convincing with Fritz then Anderson may be ripe for the picking on the slow IW courts.
