Federer will never play clay again because...

There is a good reason why Fed won’t touch clay now. He is listening to his fitness guru Pierre Paganini:

The advantage when you play on clay for the joints is that there is less shock because there is the slide, and the disadvantage of [playing on] hard courts is that shock,' he said. 'But the advantage on hard courts is that the shock is brief. In contrast, the disadvantage with the slide on clay is that there is a lot of vibration in the joints. We don’t see it from the outside, but to control this slide there is instability in the knee, the foot, the ankle. And that in some cases can be bad for the knee or joint in question.'

Post knee surgery Fed will not risk destabilising his knee by playing on the clay because he would need to slide into shots on the surface. Let’s not forget Pierre has been Roger’s fitness trainer from the very beginning and Roger has even paid him not to disclose the secrets of their training until Roger has retired. This is the guy he listens to and respects most regarding his physical conditioning and has contributed to Roger’s longevity at the very highest level.

Taking Pierre’s comments and Roger’s schedule of skipping clay in this year and last year we can safely conclude we will never see him play on clay or RG for the rest of his career. Roger’s even said he knows his knee will never be the same post surgery.

So please no more threads on he is doing it to avoid Nadal or scared of him etc, he should play it because it is bad for an ATG to skip a Grand Slam, he should play to win RG a second time round etc, etc. He’s doing it because he does not want to risk injuring his knee and only has a few more years of his career left; specifically it is a risk for Roger’s circumstances; not anyone else’s.

Any more threads on this issue are clearly trolling because they are bored and want to get a reaction from posters and do not or don’t want to understand why he will never play on clay again.

You're presuming people making such threads aren't well aware of all this.

They know, they just don't care because it doesn't fit their agenda.

I know, but it’s a last plea for them to stop and appeal to what little common sense they have by highlighting the real reason why he will never play clay again. A drawing of the line. There is not much more to discuss and insinuate other than why Roger doesn’t just come out and just say that he will not play clay or RG ever again. I can only assume he is contrained by his sponsors and commercial reasons.

...Nadal keeps playing on it?

Yep, and he takes the risk to his knees. Plus he has tendinitis in them. That is exacerbated through overplaying on any surface, not just clay, but hard; bending them lower on grass.

Plus he’s not had surgery on his knees.

I hope Federer does make a farewell appearance at French Open before he retires though....for the sake of tennis fans over there.

Surgery in some cases can lead to death...taking a certain medicine in some cases can lead to vomiting or paralysis...walking down stairs in some cases can lead to tripping and falling...eating food in some cases can lead to chocking...preparing a bath for your children in some cases can lead to knee surgery...

...because he is smart??

Let the Bullzillions believe that it has to do with Nadal, knowing how stupid that is.

As long as Rafa and Rog is #1 and #2 It is no way that Roger will reach Rafa at FO. So what has Rafa to do with It?

He made the final in Rome in 2013 against Rafa. Awful performance, but still, Roger is quite underrated on clay, as usual.

He will play the French his last year on tour. Once he wins Wimby and USO this year he'll also play French next year.

If RG changes to best three I’d root for him to give it a try!

If not, there is no reason to pursue a clay master at the expense of Wimbledon. I am pretty sure in the last year of his pro career he will still be contender for the Wimbledon.

I believe he will never do that. His final appearance will be at Wimbledon. And it could be this year.

Federer is contracted to play Basel until 2019. So I think he will at least play until the end of 2019 barring any unforeseen circumstances to his health and his family. If he plays beyond that I personally hope he has one last crack at the Olympics at Tokyo 2020. Go in there as fresh as possible and try and at least go for that last missing Gold medal. Don’t expect him to win as he will be 38/39 and it really would be a feat for him to do it. I am sure Nishikori at home will be hell bent to win gold on home soil like Murray was in 2012.

Lol at the people making excuses for him saying "clay is not a proper surface". Um yes it is. It's the surface of a slam for gods sake. Just cause you play on nothing but hard courts doesn't invalidate clay.

The French is the toughest slam to win in terms of physicality. You pretty much have to be a physical monster to even stand a chance. The guys who can't move well - Tomic for example simply get destroyed on the surface.

Really? Because the Tennis world article is saying it is from an interview with Pierre from the NY Times in Feb 2018.As I am new to the forum (not trawled through every thread on this forum to find threads with this explanation) and also not been a subscriber to NY Times this is the first time i’ve seen this quote from this interview and Pierre rarely gives interviews AFAIA.

Edit: https://mobile.nytimes.com/2018/02/13/sports/tennis/roger-federer-rankings.html

It’s taken from this article, which refers to an interview with Pierre in November 2017, which is linked to in the article. But not Pierre’s quote about playing on clay causes unforeseen vibration in the joint was not included in the November article, only referred to and quoted in the Feb 2018 article.

How many times is it going to take for you to learn sarcasm is lost on the forums?

You need to communicate with certain simplicity to be understood here:

1. Rip off your shirt Hulk Hogan style.

2. Get up on a table and scratch your armpits simultaneously belting out;

“Fedr....oooga....GOAT....booga

2a. You can change the order somewhat if you like and/or

2b. fling some feces about clay.

That’s how you craft a quality post here.
