Truly a special match and occasion.

Opened the floodgates for any journeyman player, Wimbledon groundskeeper or drunken fan to beat Rafa at Wimbledon every year.
yeah.
i dont know about his level when he lost to darcis, brown and kyrgios at wimbledon the following years but he was definitely playing well when he lost to rosol that year. much higher level than what the vb would like to believe anyway

In response to a recent thread, the AO marathon between Djokovic and Nadal was a great match. Considering the speed of the surface and the fact it was contested between arguably two best defenders in such conditions, you would really need insanely high expectations if you wanted even more winners than they produced and the match to be finished far sooner. Also, both of them take the initiative in points way more often than this place generally suggests (and that is putting it mildly, considering that we regularly hear terms like pusher and moonballer), and are actually one of finest players at doing that when under pressure. Clearly some find it tough to appreciate tennis from players that are not their favorites, which is a shame.
^^^ This.
What did you expect from this hellhole that praises Kyrgios' "exciting game and shotmaking"?

Did you see the match? Absolutely. One of the very few times in tennis I was standing up shouting at the tv. The kid running onto the court at the end to celebrate with Nadal, tells you all you need to know :p
I did see it. Federer won. That would describe the "shouting at TV"-part. I didn't see a kid celebrating runner-up with Nadal (unless you mean Federer).
Or you probably meant the semifinal against Djokovic which indeed was a great match and good choice! ;)
ahh...memories fade away so fast. you should rewatch it now! :)

The semi of course. I've not seen the final or highlights from it, since it aired live :p

Probably Fed-Safin 2005 AO (it's the first thing that comes to mind), aggressive baseline tennis and shotmaking at its finest. Any of Agassi-Rafter Wimbledon semis would do nicely too.
Pretty much my first thoughts too. Also Rafter-Ivanisevic, more for the emotions which I haven't seen again in a Wimbledon final.

Yep, 2001 Wimbledon was a match unlike any other. The whole Goran run was Holywood movie material. Getting a wildcard, beating Brit players (even the darling Tiger Tim), playing under painkillers because of his shoulder, his tormentor Sampras finally getting upset by some Swiss upstart etc.

That said, it's too emotional and both players were nervous wrecks (both knew it was their last shot at a Wimbledon title), hence not something I'd watch repeteadly, it's a one-time amazing experience. Rafter had two slams of course but Wimbledon is still Wimbledon, I remember reading Rafter's interview few years back where he was joking that he wants to punch Ivanisevic everytime they meet these days and Goran starts talking about his Wimbledon title.

Word. Hollywood is exactly what I was thinking about and as the finish line drew nearer, it felt more and more like a movie. There are many close and thrilling matches but as you say, the fact that both were strong players, both wanted it badly and both had a huge, noisy contingent of fans from their respective countries magnified the impact. I liked Rafter but I swear whenever I saw Rafter's box cheering for him, my adolescent self felt unreasonably angry at them, like they were conspiring against Goran! :D

I can always see why Maestronians love AO17, but outside of the 5th set, much of the tennis was truly mediocre. The only hype things about it are the fact that the match was close, and Fed actually didn't lose.

One match? That'd be like one girl for the rest of your life.
One ain't enough....but....something in Australia. For me
Fed's greatest performances have mostly come down under.
Roddick 2007 was pure tennis porn. I've never seen anyone
play better than that. Delpo a year or two later was similar
to that. Then of course you have Nads 2017 for the shock
and awe of seeing Federer fight Nadal as hard as Nadal fights
against him. Still, you kind of have to skip sets 2 and 4 in
that one because they are utterly foul and evil triumphs
in them. There's a match against Santoro in there somewhere
that's pretty entertaining. Santoro commits just 3 or 4 UFEs
in the entire match and loses 18 games to 3.

Agreed. Federer and Nadal both dominated sets 1/3 and 2/4 respectively. Objectively it wasn't a really high quality match. The drama in the end was great, I'll give you that.

The Rafa-Grigor SF was a better match.

I agree, it's the reason I didn't pick it for the thread, but in fairness it's much the same reason why Nadal fans like Wimbledon 2008. Federer was terrible that day. 1/13 on BP with a few 2nd serve returns chipped right into the bottom of the net, or just generally bad play in key moments. Nadal choked the 4th set TB and Federer lost 5 straight games to lose the 2nd. I don't care who he's playing, that doesn't happen to Federer on grass when he's playing well.

Yet, many Nadal fans love it (and rightfully so) for obvious reasons.

After the RG 2011 SF, 2 and 3 on my list are probably the 2012 and 2007 Wimbledon finals.

RG 2011 is #1 for me on a combination of quality and drama. It didn't go 5 sets and it was "only" a SF, but the way Federer played that day was a sight to behold, and the storyline was a big part of it. He's won some GS's before and I've thought "Oh well, there's another one," but that RG SF is one of my happiest moments as a Federer fan.

peak nadal getting rosol'd from 3:42 indicated by the loud cheers of the crowd

So what is Nadals 'peak' here? Federer apparently only had a 3 year peak, so are we saying Nadal peaked for 6 years, if 2012 was his 'peak' ?
Clearly his all surface peak was way earlier than 2012. ;)

Actually losing to Kohlschreiber in straight sets at Halle before Wimbledon 12 tells us all we need to know. He wasn't playing at any high level on grass at all. Don't try and rewrite the facts.
He missed the rest of the reason after Wimbledon with knee issues.
Form or injury, no one knows if they went hand in hand, but he wasn't ever going to do well on grass that year.

Nadal's peak coincided with Djokovic’s peak in 2011 and we all know how that turned out. ;)

Have the fondest personal memories attached to that match watching it with my two brothers.

We were supposed to go on a hike with the family that afternoon but the match was so long we had to meet them there post-hike LOL.

I was so unbelievably happy approaching my dad knowing I could tell him Federer won the match and final set 16-14.

Nadal's level of play was higher in 2011 imo.

Fedr had mono in 2008, I know Nadal fans like to brush it off but you saw a huge difference from Fed.

So when was Nadals peak? You tell me since you like to make out he was peak for most of his career, compared to Federer only having 2004-07 :rolleyes:

PS The Rosol defeat was 2012, which is claimed he was in his peak. No he wasn't.

Nadal's peak is 2007-2011.

Nadal's prime is 2007-2014.

Good mention.

I think this beauty is even more fun though. :) Take it from someone who is completely neutral in this case. :D

I would chose one with thrilling shot-making and some drama, so it would be either AO SF 2005 or SW19 SF 2000.

Peak Roddick vs Peak Federer at Wimbledon 2003-2005. These are probably the highest level of play that I have seen at tennis’ finest tournament. How Roddick couldn’t take one of these is mind-boggling.
