Its clearly either Venus Williams or Suzanne Lenglen!

this is about athleticism (power, agility, speed, improvisation), not necessarily 'talent' or skill.

so who is it?

You’ve included Venus but not Billie Jean King? Chris Evert? Even queen homophobe Margaret Court?

Strange poll and thread.

Im not arguing with Rafas opinion! Its indeed a stylish way of playing and sort of the point Im trying to make :)

The ballet dancer is actually a good comparison since ballet requires incredible strength but has to be made to look easy.

Interestingly, someone wrote an account of watching Federer from close up and said the elegance is an illusion of distance anyway. They said that close up the main impression was that he was incredibly fast and predatory.

I think I'd take Serena. Her best physical level seemed to be around 2002.

The unique mixture of power, explosiveness, endurance, agility, balance, strength to weight ratio and insane flexibility.
Venus has always been more explosive than Serena. more agile, faster, etc...

Serena is mentally stronger and makes fewer mistakes and has more options.

Last time I checked when creating a poll there’s 10 spaces so it just seems odd to leave off a big name like Billie Jean King or the slam leader Margaret Court considering you had 4 spots left. :)
I feel Martina covers the S&Vers and is a better athlete than either, but you may have a point.

LOL @ Venus being the best female tennis athlete ever! She's an awkward giraffe tripping over her own feet a lot of the time. Yes, she has power and agility but best athlete ever? She wouldn't even make the top ten. Serena is a better athlete than Venus is.

It has to be Graf or Navratilova.

I’d say that’s a tad harsh about Venus (although she does have a certain giraffe-like quality).

But yeah, I agree with Graf or Navratilova...Serena is the most dominant of the modern era, but imo, women’s tennis hasn’t been much fun since Hingis was in her prime.

I'd vote for Graf. Steffi's speed and court coverage to convert everything into a forehand was just insane. She was also very fast. Rumor was that she had a very decent 100m Sprint time .

Athlete? Sheesh thats not a subjective question at all. Impossible to say. I would think Serena is probably the most successful athlete in the history of sport for women? But she is a tennis player which is by far the most popular and profitable womens sport. There isn't anything really close.

Martina Navratilova for the next 150 years.

Btw, in my language, Tamil, the word navratna means 9 gems, referring to the 9 most precious gems. Navratilova sounds like derived word from there and she indeed is a gem. Or even 9 gems.

Agree to everything except that navaratna is, strictly speaking, not tamizh but saṃskṛta. ;)

Hope these get viewed... It's all eye opening. I did some research a few years ago when the Olympic runner Caster Semenya was going through gender controversy and found that no testing part a little questionable to say the least. Especially since she plays Olympics... Just wondering how they get around that part of it or is it different rules? My own opinion was take away the tatas you have a man, from the back view it's like looking at an NFL running back.
I've written about this extensively in other posts; that the ITF allows marquee names to dope at certain times. They also don't keep b samples after 5 years or something comparable. EPO remains detectable only for a couple of hours etc .

Perhaps the most interesting story is the circumstances surrounding Maria sharapova's initial 4 year ban for meldonium are simultaneously press stories about players, particularly those of the eastern bloc throwing matches on purpose. I have suggested the ITF was fearful of the third party sovereign state intervention like that of the justice department with FIFA and they made an example of sharapova not for the meldonium but as a warning. The whole process was a show including her appeal to drop it to two years. I apologize for being incoherent my aperitif was mescaline followed by psilocyben

this is one of the most foolish statements you have ever made on this forum, and coming from you theres plenty to choose from.

It's not remotely foolish. What's foolish is your statement that Venus is the best female athlete ever. She wouldn't even make the top ten on a list of greatest female tennis athletes. Her sister Serena is a better athlete than she is. Comparing Venus to Graf or Navratilova in terms of athletic prowess is hysterical. And just so you know, I'm not a fan of Graf or Navratilova.

its amazing what insecure caucasian males come up with and/or do to mask their fears and 'short-comings'...

again, you're ridiculous!

Venus is faster and more explosive than Serena, Graf, or Navratilova (speaking of peak/prime forms of each)!

Graf has better footwork, Martina better hands, but from a purely athletic standpoint; Venus is the best or perhaps tied with Lenglen.

Each to his own. I drastically disagree with you.

based on what?

who is faster than peak Venus (court coverage)? who is more explosive (Venus has the hardest verified serve ever in history, which she has hit more than once, she had the most pace off the ground)?

how about at least attempting to back your claim up!

For starters, I'd say Graf, Clijsters, and possibly Henin were faster than peak Venus. I'd say Halep is faster than peak Venus and probably Wozniacki as well(you know the marathon runner?) I think if you look at WTA fastest lists you'll see Wendy Turnbull often mentioned as fastest. But faster doesn't make the best overall female tennis athlete of all time which is what you are claiming. Venus at peak was definitely fast but greatest athlete? NO.
