Tennis pros have refrained from getting involved in public spats with other players in recent years but an unlikely feud has erupted between two unlikely combatants: Nick Kyrgios and Marion Bartoli.

Here is what Kyrgios posted on Instagram today:

Yesterday @bartolimarion had to say some nice things about @iamgaelmonfils and myself.. They’re ‘Pathetic’ ‘Children’ They ‘Can’t become men’ ‘wasting their life’ – Who are you to judge the way we go about things? It’s doubtful that Bartoli expected such a heated response by Kyrgios or Monfils and it will be interesting to see if Bartoli decides to resume this verbal war of words with two of the sport’s most exciting performers.

One also has to wonder if Bartoli’s tough love could provide the much-needed slap in the face spark of extra incentive to Kyrgios and Monfils, who both have disappointed with their mediocre results in majors in recent years but both look like serious second week threats right now. Monfils manhandled last year’s semifinalist Sam Querrey today in four sets to reach the round of 16 and Kyrgios is through to the third round where he will meet Kei Nishikori.

All it takes in tennis is that fraction of extra confidence, that fraction of extra motivation, that extra fraction of firepower and arrogance under pressure to alter the course of a tennis career.

Remember newspaper reporter Lloyd Carroll’s calling Mardy Fish a journeyman at the US Open press conference many years ago after losing a five setter to Tommy Robredo and it resulted in Fish’s newfound motivation which vaulted Fish into becoming an elite ATP top ten player.

Fish later credited Carroll’s unintentionally disrespectful comment as being a motivating factor in changing his career.

Is it possible, Bartoli’s comments could change the careers of Kyrgios and Monfils? Let’s wait and see…

This is what Bartoli said to provoke Nick:

Asked on BBC’s Wimbledon coverage whether Nick was capable of winning a major tournament, Frenchwoman replied: “I don’t think so.

“Just because his work ethic is just not good enough to win a grand slam.

“And even when Rafa and Roger will eventually retire, the field is just too strong. And all of the other players just put so much hard work (in) to be there.

“Even if he has all the talent in the world – and I’m defnitiely not questioning that – I don’t think he will be able to put seven matches in a row.”

Asked by fellow commentator John McEnroe whether she put enigmatic Frenchman Gael Monfils in the same basket, Bartoli slammed both stars as “childish”.

“Absolutely (I do). And that’s why Gael has never won a grand slam as well and it’s a true shame because those kids have just so much potential,” she said.

“It’s really, in a way pathetic, to see them just being (childish). It just seems like they can’t grow up. They can’t become men they just can’t take charge of their own lives.

“I wish Gael had done it before and I truly hope Nick will be able to get it together at some point. I don’t know what he needs … maybe a wake up call to see he’s going to waste his life if he keeps on acting like that.”

I don't think that person said anything wrong (maybe harsh words, but truth is harsh sometimes)

Nick with this level of low-dedicance and practice, attitude etc. Will be only a tomic with better service game

Marion is not the right person to judge them and she lacked a bit of tact in her comments, but she's 100% right. It's pretty much what everyone, both in this forum or in a TV studio, has been saying for the last couple of years. And the fact Nick took the time to answer with such a long post on his personal Instagram in the middle of a tournament tells us he actually cares about what she said.

If either start taking advice from the mental train wreck that is Bartoli, they’ve got problems

The fact they acknowledged this is a bad sign
I don't think Gael said anything about it. And Nick totally blew it in his remarks by saying, "we don't care what you said," but spent two paragraphs defending himself, thus showing how defensive he can get. Just let it go.

Yep he cares. Maybe it will do some good. He needs to get serious and prove them all wrong.

He goes out of his way to respond to trolls. Some of them I think he even stalks their social media profiles a bit to find some material for his response.

Yes. Prove her wrong then, Nick. Do the talking on the court, with tennis play and results.

I see points for both here tbh. I don't think Bartoli should judge, but I see her overall point, even though she was brutally honest. If this wakes up Nick to take the next step then it was well worth it, but I don't think it will, unfortunately.

Best for Nick to ignore it while playing in the biggest tennis tournament in the world though. He's not the first young guy that's taken criticism for not living up to his potential, and he won't be the last. The rest of them just didn't respond on Instagram.

I don't see anything wrong with Kyrgios' response. Bartoli was just voicing common opinion about both of those players, however, and no one with eyes thinks either have lived up to their potential. The part about "pathetic" and "childish," however, crossed a line she should not have crossed. She could have chosen her words more carefully and avoided the whole controversy.

I hope so. He has tons of talent, it would be a shame if he wastes it.

Bartoli is an anorexic-boulimic attention seeker drama queen

Anorexia and bulimia are very serious disorders that people don't have complete control over, they're not reasons to mock a person. And despite how terrible and unbearable Bartoli was/is, she's still a GS champion, something neither Nick nor Monfils have achieved in their career. That's more than enough to give her some attention.

He has the right to answer whoever he wants. In fact, his post doesn't look so bad if not for the last part where he says he doesn't care what she says and pretty much says she's desperate for attention. That makes his comment go from a justified defense to a teenage rant.

Bartoli put so much work in, no way near the most naturally gifted player but worked hard and won the biggest slam on the tour. She has had problems in the past, especially with her fluxuated weight but she made the best of her situation and is now arguably one of the better commentators on the tour too. (I like her commentary at least)

She's honestly in her right to say that stuff because i agree with it and too many people dance around the issue. Kyrgios has a future so he could change but what she said is especially true about Monfils. An absolute clown who decided to be an joker entertainer instead of a great player.

not mocking her - just saying she has some serious psycho troubles

so what? - Kyrgios is 10 times more talented

Talent means nothing if you don't do anything with it. People remember champions and titles won, not potential. Nick still has time and can win many things, but for now, Marion has more to brag about than him.

not mocking her - just saying she has some serious psycho troubles

You clearly said that in a derogatory way. There was no need to bring her health issues here.

you are clearly interpretating my neutral comment in a derogatory way

it’s a mental issue, not a health one

If Bartolis goal was to stay relevant, mission accomplished.

But why pick on Monfils? Yeah he doesn't work hard enough, but he's not a jerk to other players, umpires and lines people like Nick is.

Mental health is also health, and her disorder clearly affected her body, not her judgment. There was no reason for you to bring it to the conversation at all, except you wanted to find more words to describe her in a negative way. That's what you did and it's displayed in your comment and how you put her diseases side by side to those negative adjectives, it's not my interpretation.

What did she say that was wrong? If Marion Bartoli is what's passed as making brutally honest comments these days, it really makes me wonder what someone like Roy Keane or Eric Bristow would have made of someone with the attitude of Kyrgios.

aha agree but just saying Bartoli is well known to be a media attention seeker in France, jumping on every possible occasion to talk about her food diseases, ex-boyfriend or whatever or « in her dreams » aborted come back.

Bartoli was no more brutal on Monfils than what McEnroe has been before. It's to do with the fact that Monfils is so incredibly talented, yet his quality of play is so volatile and seemingly related to his attitude.

Her point wasn't about them being brats/jerks/whatever, but the fact they don't work hard enough to win big things despite being terribly talented. Both fit very well in that.

no he was just moonballing

a very limited tennis player
Beat Boris in the MC final in '95, coming from two sets down and denying Boris MP's. I think the last set was a bagel. Becker never did win a single clay event, which still astounds me. He grew up on clay and played well on it, but never could get that elusive clay title.
