Age has caught up to Fed. He can still play his beautiful game on some days (like against KYrgios two days ago) but On other days he can play 1 or 2 good sets and 3 lousy sets. The main problem is he just doesn’t have the legs anymore and once an opponent puts him on the defensive he is unable to defend more than one or two shots before he is out of position and he is unable to attack from a defensive position which was he did regularly in the past. Oh well, the year is almost over. Rest up, Rog. Make your appearances at Basel (hometown) and Shanghai (for the money), but I’d recommend skipping the WTF and just train and come back for a good run in Melbourne...

The weirdest thing wasn't how badly Fed played, it was his checked-out mental state. He showed little will to compete. Normally when he makes poor unforced errors, he gets a little fired up. Instead he seemed completely apathetic and resigned to losing.
Yea he really didn't even seem to get upset when he was dumping shots a high schooler could make over and over.

Federer fans on this forum are ridiculous, he had a bad loss today but the guy is 37. He's a couple of years away from being 40 in tennis. It's ridiculous he's still playing as well as he is anyway and he lost to an in-form player. Give the guy a break.

Agree, but that’s the point. He’s 37. And now he’s showing it. These aren’t exhos, these are Majors. I really don’t want to see him enter events if he plays like that. If he wants to then fine, but I don’t want to watch it...

I'm one of the biggest Fed fans, but this match shows you the difference between Fed's fight and Nadal's. Nadal would have never gone down like this without a fight.

Not exactly true. RG 2015 against Novak was pretty bad. As was that entire two years for him. I actually remember making a remark on this very forum about Nadal completely giving up on a point when he was in the process of getting bageled by Berdych at AO 2015. That match wasn't very pretty either.

It's not as uncommon as you think.

Some people are in denial here. The guy didn’t want a match in the next round with Djokovic. You think he loses if sousa had upset Djokovic earlier? He would play tight but he actually would have won the match.
What I don't get is why Federer exited court signing no autographs and then couldn't even walk down the tunnel. Looks like he took an immediate right into a room for a good cry. Will be interesting press conference. I'm not so sure he reacts this way when deliberately tanking to avoid Djoko.o_O

Don't know what to say. Can't even blame the court or the conditions since Fed's been like this since IW this year. Think we should get accustomed to seeing these mental walkabouts with him now consistently throughout the remainder of the 1 or 2 years left now. :(
Just put clowns in his draw and Federer will play like it's 2005. But put Djokovic in there and Federer will act like he's mentally undone. The guy tanked. He clearly quit. He didn't want to win this match.

Millman is 1-10 for his career against the top 10. His only win was against Federer. I just looked up Donskoy. He is also 1-10 vs the top 10 for his career. His only win was against Federer. Is there anybody else that would like his first career win against the top 10? If so, he should play Federer.

Agassi said that the end comes very quickly. I was in denial for a very long time. But the end is here for Fed. A healthy Fed in 2019 will have similar results to his 2013 season.

Congrats to Fed for winning 20 slams. That is an amazing career. It has been a blast seeing him play.

As a reminder, Federer is the oldest guy ranked in the top 100. And he is the only man that is 35+ that is ranked in the top 50. Age always wins. Age is the GOAT. Fed clung on for dear life and challenged Rosewall as the best old player ever.

Thank you Fed for an amazing career.

Why would he tank a hard court slam? Ridiculous notion. He'd never have the slam record with such an absurd mentality.
However, he has not been competitive at USO for years now. The favorites are Djokodal. The dark horses are Delpo/Cilic.
Ik he hasn't won in 10 years, but he's still been quite competitive since. 2009 he lost a marathon finals to Delpo, 2010 and 2011 he had two match points against Djokovic in both matches (these two matches really could've changed tennis history quite a bit), 2012 he got Berdych'ed, 2014 he ran into a GOATing Cilic, 2015 he ran into 2015ovic, and he got Delpo'ed again last year. The only years where he attended the USO and played badly was 2013, 2017 and this year.

I am so sick of people using his age. Also indian Wells. Did anyone see Wimbledon? The guy played well in that tournament. I wonder how much is the lack of play. He seems too much of a rhythm player.

It wasn't a decline. It was the fear of Djokovic. Millman is garbage. You're going to see the slaughter job Djokovic does on Millman in the next round. It will be a complete bloodbath.

Agree on the Djokovic slaughter, but then Djoker is 31 to be fair, Fed looks every days worth his 37 years at the moment. A world away from competitive at the elite sport level.

I very much doubt he was avoiding Djokovic. But I actually wouldn’t blame him if he was.

Well tbh I didn’t either but most hand-wringers (like some in this thread) did...but beyond that I simply don’t see how this could be worse than the stuff we saw in 2013. Fed’s won a slam this year, and he’s added to his legend so much in these last 5 years. Would anybody risk rewinding back to then and seeing how things play out? I sure wouldn’t.

you'd be furious if you were watching this live (from 2nd set atleast)....many of the misses were absolutely shocking.

I think 2 SPs in 2nd set, loses serve from 40-15. next time, loses serve from 40-15.

3rd set TB, up a mini-break, loses it.

4th set, up a break and 40-15. loses it.

came off the back off a good 2 sets vs kyrgios.

its the manner of the loss and bewildering misses that is annoying.

in that way its worse than 2013.
not otherwise.

Rafa took the next set to a TB and showed a lot of fight that day despite many problems with his game. Horrible comparison.

Trolling aside once again, this man is the GOAT not just of tennis, but perhaps all of sport.

I take a bow for Roger and all he has done for our sport. Watching him throughout the years has been magical.

That’s hog wash! A 37 year old Federer should beat millman. Federer just came off beating kyrgios in straight sets. Novak will now trounce millman.

Please keep in mind AO and W suits him much better nowadays and is the only place he's really had success since he retooled his game and got to the top again in 2017. Wait till after AO to draw any conclusions

I think that is a bit unfair. there are a lot more of us so it looks like a massive meltdown, but id imagine if rafa/novak fell off like this there would be a huge commotion from their fanbases.

not to mention, its just drives home how fed really is closer to retirement than anything. millman certainly played well and wasn't missing on a lot of shots but I wouldn't say he blew fed off the court. fed's stats were not looking good

Indeed, many Djokovic fans detested his level over the last couple of years. And they never had to put up with anything as bad as tonight. Just awful.

what on earth are you on about ? Nadal got blasted off in straights both vs Berdych in AO 15 and vs Novak in RG 15.

the last 2 sets for fed also went to a breaker here FTR.

Scared of Novak.

Maybe in the back of his mind. A subconscious thing. It’s really the title or nothing really he’s not interested in losing to Novak or Rafa and having to answer the questions. Just like number 1 he’s not interested if he’s playing for number 2 or 3.

I don't really care what you say cos your head is so far up in Novak's posterior - I'm going to post this once and only once, all the rational and sane people on this forumn know that Federer doesn't tank slam matches, if you've watched him tho season, you would know that he has been choking big time after having leads in sets, being up in sets and having MPs and even CPs. His level of play was impacted by the humidity and his body couldn't hold up to the conditions, which is a shame that he lost to a random journeyman but kudos to Millman he got the job done and I hope now that Novak goes all the way.

Federer up 40-15 to go up 2-0 in sets. then loses the match. seems like another choke job.

unsurprising though. Federer has been in poor form really most of the year.

Have you seen Federer’s play in consequential matches this year?

Post-Rotterdam, he’s been pretty awful in every big match he has contested.

Rolling my eyes @ some internet Federer’s basically calling the real Federer a p u s s y

The guy has no business losing to millman. Makes you wonder. Did you forget how he played at Wimbledon? He played well despite losing to Anderson.

Well, I was following the live scores and that often infuriates me even more. When Federer plays as poorly as he did near the end of the 4th I basically just lose all tournament expectations I have for him. Was perusing this thread periodically and it seemed pretty well-established that he was terrible beyond words.

Based off what little I’ve watched it appears likely that he played worse in this match than the Robredo one, but I was tenfold more dejected after the latter.

Do you genuinely believe that? Didn't Fed say he would play till 2020.

Well I wouldn't bet on it but I think it's a possibility. Can't recall Fed ever giving a clear-cut answer on retiring mostly because I believe he himself doesn't know yet, don't think it will be something he plans one year in advance or something.

How must Uniqlo be feeling? We gave $300 million to an aging legend who probably won't be around after 2019 and we still have to pay him off the court for another 9 years for publicity shoots? Folks, Tony Godsick is the REAL GOAT here.

i dont think djokovic had anything to do with this.

if fed thinks he cannot beat djoker, then don't play...

im pretty sure that is NOT his mentality..he knows if he plays well he has chances against everyone.

Don't think they really gave him that much money but it does look like the right call by Nike to get out of the Federer business.

He won a slam just seven months ago. I think he'll be around for at least a couple more years.

yeah but a lot has changed in 7 months and he's 37 and he is certainly not getting younger. yes overall can't complain, any year where he wins a slam is a good year but honestly at this point it just feels so far away and he really hasn't been able to produce solid tennis since maybe IW or w/e. atleast back in 2014/2015 he was loosing to the best player of that time. I want to be wrong ofc
