Federer will retire in 2020

As a Federer and Nadal fan, I have to say it has been amazing watching these two.

It will be sad day when Federer retires because I truly believe he is the greatest player of all time and will be for a very long time. I would guess for another 40 years or so.

He was pushed on the way by the second greatest player of all time even when he was at his prime, for example Wimbledon 2008 was an amazing match from both players. No wonder most tennis experts regard that as the greatest match of all time. Rather fitting that the two greatest players play the greatest match of all time.

Nadal may or may not beat Federer's slam count, and if he does I know many will regard Nadal as the greatest but I think there are more qualities than just the slam count. If only two players in history existed, Federer and Nadal then Nadal would be the greatest clearly, but tennis is played against everyone.

Federer will retire in 2020, he will play the Olympics because that is the only one he hasn't got and he wants it quite badly. It shouldn't really matter because it's not really an official tournament, but the media and commentators have built up the golden slam, which Federer hasn't got.

People are treating Federer harshly for his loss yesterday. He shouldn't even be on a tennis court at this age, all of his greatest rivals of a similar age have been retired for years. For him to play at that level at this age, it is an achievement beyond comprehension. Nadal, Djokovic, Murray who are some of the greatest athletes sport has ever seen will not be playing anywhere close to this level at 37. Djokovic has a chance but his body is already starting to go.

So for Federer it's two years of carefully managing his body and selecting tournaments, no clay. He will give his farewell at Wimbledon 2020, and try for the summer Olympics.

quick question though for all the Olympic enthusiasts, i thought due to new DC rules, he wouldn't even qualify for Olympics.

It was an extraordinary match, but I’d say 2nd best, after the 1980 Wimbledon Final. The tiebreak in that match was the most drama i’ve ever felt watching any sport. The only match in history made into a Hollywood movie!?!

I think Fed wont make 2020. He will be gone before then. Unless a really, really weak field keeps him in the top 5, and even then injury might force his hand.

Wimby 2008 has always been overated. It was so dark in the 5th they should have given them torches.

Laver Cup 2019 would be perfect send off being in Geneva, however Olympics in 2020 are in Japan and would fit with Uni-qlo sponsorship. I do think he will announce when he will retire far in advance. I don't think he will do a Pete Sampras.

Here you go, watch and be quiet

Thank you.

Everyone here forgets how amazing Nadal played to win that match. The man who had only won on clay before, the man who was up against not any grass court great, but the greatest grass court great.

People here seem to think this match Nadal came, Federer didn't even play (even though he hit some of the best shots?).

But in reality the world and tennis experts saw a match filled with incredible quality and hitting. Even from the first rally, this is a combined level of performance never seen before.

How can anyone deny the quality of the play in this match? Blinded maybe?

I think he will retire once he hits the point where he can't win majors anymore.

I don't think that time is far away by any means.

For how critical everyone was of his Cincinnati final, he was clearly visibly tired and feeling beat up. He still played well enough to hang in there, but Djokovic clearly outlasted him physically.

It is rumored that his Uniqlo deal stipulates that he play in the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
If that is true, I think he retires at end of 2020. If not, I think he retires after Geneva Laver Cup next year. He is unfortunately done winning Grand Slams. That is obvious after his Wimbledon loss to Anderson and his loss to Millman last night.

He was so lucky to win another 3 GSs since 2017, all thanks to Djoker's mysterious slump or injury. Otherwise, he would be slamless since 2012 and probably already retired by now. Now that Djoker's back and Nadal constantly at high level, he has insurmountable roadblocks to every big title on every surface, and that was already proven right, just look at Cincy. Why bother anymore when you can't win?

Why do you guys think he should retire if is unable to win slams?

After 2012 there was a major drought, he still carried on playing. The guy enjoys his tennis so much, I watch his practice sessions, he's always smiling, fooling about with some shots etc. He enjoys being on the court and I can totally see that. In 2017 Australian, he said he just wanted a good run, he wasn't expecting to get to the final and win - but maybe it was just that he had nothing to lose so he was playing so freely.

I think he's done enough to keep his title as the greatest, even if Nadal somehow manages to surpass his slam count. For me Federer say by 2009/2010 was cemented as the greatest of all time. This is just bonus what we are seeing, it's been about 10 years since he was at his absolute best, probably 2009 Australian or French we saw the last remains of his greatest form, since then it has been decline (from his very high standards that is).

He doesn't have to win slams to have the right to still play, he clearly enjoys it, his body is still able to do so with breaks.

He will still have a chance to win slams in the next two years, he will always go in as one of the favorites, just like this US open but just not the favorite. He will still be capable of reaching semis, his serve and forehand don't rely on speed which will allow him to win his games.

After 2020, he will play huge amounts of charity and exhibitions and you just know Federer is the type of guy that will still train regularly and keep form well into his 40s and 50s. When Nadal also retires, they will have countless number of these special event matches and I can't wait.

This rivalry will continue, with good spirits, well into the future.

Some one started a thread about this the other day since Fed himself alluded to the Laver Cup as "something" to do with his retirement. It was a great thread, but immediately jumped on by Fednatics as being a Fed hater for even mentioned it. I mean, the OP just mentiond it was interesting that Fed was the one to acknowledge his retirement where he is normally completely dismissive when the subject comes up.

Should find that thread and really thank the OP for his insight to the topic.

So why do you think Fed is the GOAT if Nadal beat him here in 2008?

Not sarcasm. Seriously wondering.

One match against one opponent doesn't determine where you stand in history. The 2008 Wimbledon was a period where Federer was still at his absolute prime, aged 27 the perfect age, Nadal done incredible to get to that level, because no one else could beat Federer at Wimbledon, and Nadal didn't get lucky in 2008, he fought for every point, ran for every point (they both did I guess), but Nadal beat him, and deserved. But the question is, on grass, how many times did Nadal get to his 2008 form, or get close? Maybe in 2007, 2008 obviously, 2009 (if he played) and 2010. That is a four year window, Federer on the other hand was able to sustain a high level of form throughout the last 15 years on grass.

So many other factors though, Federer's style of play, especially during 2005-2007 was a level not seen before. His consistency, semi final and quarter final records consecutive which is unbelievable. Something like 9 finals in a row and then 10 slam finals in a row, this kind of form we haven't seen the likes of before.

His level of play on this 'weakest' surface clay. Without Nadal he would have been a 4 or 5 time Roland Garros champion, because apart from Nadal who could beat Federer at the French say from 2005-2011? Not many, if any. The number of match wins at Roland Garros for me anyway say Federer is a clay court great.

If there were only two tennis players to exist, Federer and Nadal, then Nadal would clearly be the greatest, the numbers speak for themselves. But tennis is not based on two players.

Really what makes him the greatest is, apart from Nadal, he absolutely dominated the field - head and shoulders above. He's the reason I started watching tennis.

Thanks - and Nicely said!

I like it. And I agree. He got me into tennis as well. (And Nadal is amazing too)

But - Yeah - there are Fed records besides 20 GS that are almost as impressive.

18/19 Grand Slam Finals in a row!
#1 or #2 in the world for at least part of EVERY year since 2003 up to 2018 (today obviously).

Others are more cited and obvious - but these two are just ridiculous.
