My take:

Naomi Osaka was the far superior player today: 6-2, 6-4 on merit. Nothing should taint her victory, and her unflappable demeanor and classy, delightful personality should be praised.

As for the controversy, Serena (who said the right things at the ceremony and mostly did so at the post-game presser) has to handle these things better in the heat of the moment. One can debate whether the umpire was too quick to assess the three penalties, but Serena should know better. Yes, she may be the best women's player of all-time and she is a great fighter, but (in my opinion), she is very hard for me to root for. For the most part, I think she is intelligent, articulate and fairly interesting off the court, but on the court, she does what she can to intimidate linesmen/umpires and her opponents.

So, let's not lose the "lede". Naomi Osaka routed Serena Williams - in front of a decidedly pro-Serena crowd - in her first major final. She handled everything like a pro's pro, and seemed like she was 17 years older, classier and wiser than her vaunted opponent. Well done, Naomi!

Indian Wells is ready and waiting. Better weather.

Indian Wells would be a way better crowd and better venue overall. Major sporting events in America are way better when a smaller locale is able to take ownership of the event and build mystique. Examples- College World Series in Omaha, the Masters in Augusta. Both of those would be way worse if they were held in NYC, downtown LA or Chicago.

Can't see how moving it to Indian Wells will improve Serena's mood somehow.;)

To be fair to Osaka, she mostly keeps to herself. I would not think Osaka would even be involved in that.

The only coaching she needed was already done prior to the match, Sascha Bajin knew everything about SW and that helped Osaka a lot.

.. and I dno if your post is even true.
Neither is Serena yet Patrick was stupid enough to give it to her.

People are also acting like she changed her gameplay after when she was already coming to the net more times than Osaka beforehand.

so coach admitted to coaching and serena denied getting coaching? was she angry just because she got caught? feel like her anger should be at the coach for coaching.
Maybe the answer in future is to have the coach removed from the stadium rather than penalise the player, it’s not as though the player is always looking for coaching when they get it.

I respect her for standing up for herself and women in general. She's a true champion on and off the tennis court.

I'm interested if you guys said this thing when the crowd boo Fed's opponent.

It's never cool to see a player "booed" or cheers when a player misses a first serve for example. I can't speak for everyone but I guess no fan likes it, even when it's for their favorite player.
What we saw today went too far: booing in the trophy cerimony when a 20 year old girl is having the moment of her life is not the same as celebrating someone's double fault and that's why I think it's being said a lot more.

There were 2 women on that court, how could it be sexism if the umpire only called penalties on Serena? Using that word to describe every slight you encounter just makes it harder to prove actual misogyny in action. Not everything that happens to a woman is because of sexism.

I'm a raging feminist and this stuff doesn't help.

Chair was sexist by letting Osaka win?

Serena calling Osaka a man?

Serena doing that to a minority female is both racist and sexist. Awful person.
So Serena is actually insulting Osaka by calling Ramos a sexist because Osaka was the person who took advantage of the situation. By definition of "sexism" Serena is calling Osaka a man here.

Never been a Williams sisters fan. Just don't appreciate this approach to sport. Just too negative and hateful.

I’ve always been fine with Venus. But I’m a racist for disliking Serena.

I guess since I’m a racist I’m not able to like Tiafoe or Monfils or Tsgona, even though I do.

As usual Serena comes with the typical excuse.Look Serena got completely outplayed in this match,Osaka was playing very well and the violation Serena received did not affect the outcome of the game at all.So just accept the loss and move on.

Serena was getting her ass handed to her. That's what prompted the illegal coaching.
CHEATER, CHEATER, CHEATER!! :p
Forget the first set.
It was 3-3 all in the second set and Serena had a pretty shocking game with 2 DF that led it to 3-4

It was still all to play for at that point.

I don't know why you are screaming cheater when she didn't cheat.

What she said:
“Umpire was being sexist and I’ll continue to fight for women”

What she meant:
“Umpire was doing his job and I’ll continue to break the rules because it’s my way or no way!”

Think of all the times Nadal and co have done on court coaching and gotten away with it and then look at today... funny that.

Not condoning what she did but she’s got a point, higher standards for women than the men.

Step back from it.

This is all smoke and heat. The issue of whether or not men are treated differently in general matters not to how the umpire and players handled this game. Clearly to be an umpire in the final means one is an excellent and experienced umpire.

In this case, the umpire applied the rules to a prima donna.

Whatever you think of Serena and Naomi (and I adore Naomi), there is no doubt in my mind that the chair acted improperly.

I think there was gender bias at work. The first coaching violation? Deserved. The second violation? Deserved.

But I cannot begin to count the number of times men have sat in their chairs on changeovers and had heated discussions with umpires, and nothing whatever happens. But when it is Serena, it is a game penalty in the final. Insane. Her words were actually civil -- saying she deserved an apology, no profanity, no threats.

Need more proof?

In this same tournament, we had a chair umpire come out of his chair to basically coach Kirios in front of God and everyone. The proper response would have been to enforce the code of conduct, but no. Ump goes easy on the man, and USTA backs up the umpire.

By that standard, Ramos should have come out of his chair and talked to Serena, calm her nerves, tell her he wants to help her. Nope -- game penalty (when the tirade was over and he could have let it go) to put Serena's opponent a game away from the championship.

Congratulations to Naomi, but what happened today was rooted in disparate treatment and sexism.

I guess telling the umpire that "I will make sure you don't ever ever ref a match of mine in your career again..." is not threatening... multiple calls calling him a thief or demanding an apology? okay...

Hard to say it didn't affect the match when it went from 3-4 to 3-5 due to the game penalty.

She received coaching signals during play. Isn't that cheating?

She called him a liar and a thief. That's way over the line, and I've never heard any heated exchange reach that point where you're saying the the umpire is dishonest, basically insulting them.

And hang on if it's sexism, you need to show other examples of where Ramos has been stricter with female players vs male ones. You can't just cite this example and say it's because she's a woman.

And what another umpire did in a men's match has no relation to this umpire in a woman's match.
