Bottom line men do this stuff too I watched the match and have watched her matches in the past and her competitive outbursts mirror men moreso than women. There is nothing wrong with that. I think if I looked hard enough I could find three BETTER examples of bad behavior than Serena’s. Was she on thin ice? without a doubt. She should’ve know that. However she isn’t wrong men do it with far more regularly and not much comes come of it.

In the final it’s time to have even thicker skin. And all those touting the rule book thisnand rule book that ... if Novak were to do the exact same thing tomorrow is he given a game penalty? I am just gonna leave that there to sit. Cause I am willing to bet you make it apples and apples he says verbatim what she says does exactly what Serena does he doesn’t get the penalty.

I am not surprised by her behaviour as she has always been that way and I do not have a high opinion of her as a person anyway but to come up with politically charged excuses (it's because she is a woman, boo boo, men are doing this and that, I am a mother and I suppose a "role model" and all other stupid stuff) trying to portrait herself as a victim is just plain stupid and childish. At least she could take the Fedr approach and boil with anger inside of her and fake her "coolness" throughout the match. It is artificial but it is effective as we can see. This bogan mentality she cannot escape from tells all about her.

First of all, she isn't 37 yet. Secondly, she won Australia last year and reached the finals of Wimbledon and the US Open this year, so her "decline" is still better than most players' peak.
But it's still a decline. And a significant one too because she's reaching finals and making superstars of people she would've creamed six years ago.

And the world will then be a happy place full of love and understanding, sigh!

Plenty to not like about Serena's behavior but the finger waving at Ramos along with her threat that he'll never work another of her matches pretty much sums up she thinks she's bigger than the sport. She isn't. The WTA got along fine in her absence and they obviously will get along fine after she retires. They have a bright young star who seems very well composed for special moments. Lines people need not fear physical retribution and chair umpires will be left to enforce the rules properly.

Instead you have Serena claiming on-court that she and her coach don't have signals, then her coach admitting right after the match that he was coaching (but it's okay, because everybody does it guys - look at Toni and Rafa!) and then Serena acting confused about his statement, saying she didn't know what he was talking about.

NOPE, NOTHING TO SEE HERE FOLKS
its kinda like Trump or something. No Serena NOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Osaca was up a break at 4-3 and needed two service holds to win it. She didn't get tight while serving for it at 5-4. Nobody knows for sure but from the way she served it out, she most likely would have won anyway.

I was thinking to myself, man her level is so high right now it surely will drop. What a bad time for it to drop now in second set, but ...I was wrong she continued to perform well and that's all she wrote.

You know I don't know if her level ever dropped in 7 matches? That being said she could be crushed first round AO. Gotta love the WTA:)

James Blake on Twitter has also been defending her. He said he has personally said worse things and didn't get a violation.

Ouch. Yea it aint gonna be pretty. Although I will say this some things stick with me. Remember when AZ wandered off the court a few years back in a hot Aussie match with Stephens? She just left then came back like 10 minutes later. I don't know if she got disciplined for that. I just remember Stephens was pissed. And she was losing and she came back and beat Sloan. It was nuts. Sometimes these players do things the refs don't have a clue wtf to do.
Yes, Azarenka should SFU, as she's a well known cheat.

One of the things she mentioned about her performances at Indian Wells and this US Open was how she felt outside of the court. She felt at ease and relaxed as opposed to her time in Charleston when she just did not feel comfortable. This made all the difference in her performance. Along the lines of feel good play good. BTW she mentioned this in her press conference during quarter finals or semi finals.

Yeah I was expecting her to get nervous at 5-4. It's tough to serve for your first GS title in the best of scenarios, here it was doubly difficult for what had happened before that, the crowd was also fully involved in it. Impressive performance under immense pressure.

I still don't understand how the heck she got away with that to this day. Like I said sometimes these matches are almost like pro wrestling. You try and make logic out of the illogical. I guess its human nature though.

More to the point; has any other player, (male or female) managed to amass two violations in recent memory, Serena aside? Because if they have, they did a fantastic job in not letting it get to three. It's almost like it shouldn't be that hard.
Yes, Djokovic, just few days ago.

Don't think so, Osaka was completely zoned in. Her on-court composure was that of a veteran of the game and she was completely outplaying Serena. I think she would have won in straights either way.

Shame you don't see that in men's game these days.

Agreed. Naomi played well in their 1st meeting at Miami against a much worst Serena (recently back), so I thought Naomi would have a much tougher time here. Looking at both highlights, you'd think it was more of the same. Nope. Naomi improved, and she played top shelf tennis here and throughout the tournament. If she can keep close to this level at a decent clip, she'll lead the tour, if not dominate.

Her coach (Serena's old hitting-partner, interestingly) has done wonders with her game.

I'd actually wager that given the same circumstances he totally would. If Serena - a massively popular player in NYC - got handed a game penalty, you think that Djokovic, a player that, while liked, lags far behind both Federer and Nadal in popularity would be exempt? When he's playing a huge, likable underdog in Del Potro?

You clowns. I am really sick of sticking up for her least you guys think I actually like her (Halep and Vika are my personal favorites). But I just said this in another thread, there are I’m willing to bet far worse examples of behavior during this open albeit likely from men that none of this happened in. And it boils down to the fact that competes and is demonstrative more like and man that a women. I don’t think she crossed a line really, she obviously was on thin ice and it’s a shame on her for not being able to compose herself. But come on if Novak does the exact same thing tomorrow make it apples and apples he doesn’t get the game penalty which changes how the outburst itself is viewed ... and likely the headlines will read “Conpetetive Edge Boils Over....” so give me a break. She’s hated I get it shoot I can see it but she isn’t wrong men wouldn’t have been handled like that. And she did compose herself at the award ceremony and was gracious. But because your ilk hate her she was being fake and trying to save face....

Yea I just don't put to much stock in a lot of these WTA runs. She is good. Possibly can be great. But she can go off her rocker like Azarenka date a rapper, get knocked up. Its all a crapshoot. I doubt thats her lol. But look at Azarenka. She crushed a double at Miami and Indian wells then went on a walkabout and hasn't been the same since. She was headed toward greatness and well, it all went goofy. Not that I really mind the crazy drama of the WTA. But we have seen this before.

I propose to all the following;

Serena Williams should be known as MAMA Mia on this forum moving forward. If someone addresses her under her Jehovah's name will be penalised a game.

I should but I don't. Certain crazy tennis things stick in my mind. Part of me thinks tennis wants the drama thats why they put coaches down near the court, have racket smashing rules which I honestly don't think any other sport has. Don't smash your racket! LOL who came up with this?

I suspect the treatment of a male player in similar circumstances depends which umpire they get. Carlos Ramos has a reputation for umpiring by the book. A different umpire might have let Serena go and done nothing about it.

Right now I don't have a cable subscription so I missed the match. After reading about this debacle I do not see the point of paying extra to get the Tennis Channel(for its rerun coverage). I have been a big fan of tennis since 1985 but I am tired of the ridiculous sense of hubris exhibited not just by Serena but by all these pampered players. This is a classic example of what is wrong with society in general. Everything is blown way out of proportion. Like a lifeguard at the pool the umpire is not going to call every infraction. However, he does have the authority to make the calls he did and if he was wrong, it was not because he is biased against women. There is a way that Serena is right but not the victim of a plot against her individually or as a woman.

Def agree. I'm just happy she got one (for Japan, herself, and history books), everything after will just be cherry on top.

Welp, there you go. Amazing what a little self-control can do NO WAIT DON'T TAKE ME AWAY I'M NOT SEXIST I SWEAR NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

It’s not sexist if your consistent. My issue is those who aren’t who hate how much she competes and her passion while living Murrays fighting spirit for example. Not apples and apples to be clear but you get my drift. For me I will never tell the next person how to behave in those spots cause personally I know I was a big trash talking jerk when I played basketball in college. And that was Div 2 and I was just the scrappy point guard. Haha.

No surprise she is using the current feminism narrative to excuse her abysmal behaviour.

"I'm here fighting for women's rights and for women's equality and for all kinds of stuff. For me to say 'thief' and for him to take a game, it made me feel like it was a sexist remark. He's never taken a game from a man because they said 'thief'.

"For me it blows my mind. But I'm going to continue to fight for women and to fight for us to have equality.

"I just feel like the fact that I have to go through this is just an example for the next person that has emotions, and that want to express themselves, and want to be a strong woman.

Rafa went ballistic after getting booked for it. But he got himself off the ledge pretty quickly after.
I believe golf has a violation policy for broken clubs. But sports like baseball don’t.
I think the tennis penalty is more so for influencing kids away from being bratty?

Not surprising. The players know the truth, on court coaching happens all the time and goes unpunished yet Serena gets the warning/penalty in a slam final. Ludicrous. Men get away with far worse. Interesting hearing from the players perspective instead of some forum trolls.

No male player who's reached a GS final in the last 15 years that I have been following the game would behave the way Serena did. Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray, Wawrinka, Del Potro, Ferrer, Berdych, Safin, Hewitt, Roddick, Cilic, Agassi, Soderling you take anyone. Forget male players, I would say the same thing about other female players as well. No one other than Serena would do that. They may get one code violation for coaching/racquet abuse but they would not repeat it, nor would they throw a temper tantrum like her and berate the umpire. Serena has a problem and it has nothing to do with her gender or race.

The real justice should be if Serena is handed a one year ban.
I was dreading that she would do something at us open final after seeing the first set.
And she did...
She won't dare to do this at Paris or London I'm sure

Yea I mean she is super cool. But then again she gets depressed ect. I am a fan for sure. Remember when Sloan was super cool then she started bugging everyone and then she dropped off and people said ohh I hate her she is lazy then bam she comes back and everyone is like oh she's not so bad and then well you know what I mean lol.
