This isn't really that big of a deal and happens all the time. The difference is that this is a very publicized event. Players have, through no fault of the umpire, managed to attribute their loss to officiating and get into arguments and just not get along with certain umpires. By stubbornly forcing that umpire on that player shortly after an incident you'd be intentionally introducing a disruptive element into the match - which, by the way, is exactly what people criticize Ramos for doing. It makes more sense to let things cool down for a bit first. To be honest, when I first read this thread I assumed it was to say that male umps would work all the men's matches and female umps would work all the women's matches.

I would completely agree with WTA decision to have only female umpires. I would go a step further!! For all junior girl matches girls would be umpires, for junior boys just junior boys to umpire.

Let's stick to the principles all the way. Let's be politically correct, we the softkoks of the world!

That the sport would even consider the possibility of changing the umpiring arrangements to appease players is tantamount to corruption.

I can't believe this is even being discussed :D

Could you imagine this happening in basically any other sport? Imagine a footballer treating the ref like that with repeated abuse - they'd get a red card ffs and we'd probably never even hear the official's name

But its not PC to have only female umpires for WTA and only male umpires for ATP.

Honestly though, Ramos is one of the ITF's best umpires - let's get him taken off WTA matches entirely and on to more of the main event instead.

The WTA management is clearly unable to manage themselves in an unbiased and rational fashion - just look at their own comments made against Ramos after the USO final. If they don't respect the gold badge umpires then they can make do without them and poor Ramos and Lahyani can avoid all the screaming too.

what???

thats how it was until relatively recently! it was changed as a sign of further equality to allow umpires of either gender to facilitate either genders' matches.

did anyone actually read the OP's article? there's virtually nothing said in it.

Nope. Just like nobody bothered to acknowledge the post about Nadal having an umpire "segregated" from his matches. If it doesn't suit these trolls agenda they whistle right past it.

amen. article says, "Serena doesn't want umpire doing her matches. Ramos won't be doing WTA matches anyway. Tennis Australia may make a decision at some point before the Australian Open." yet we've got 2 pages.

So nobody actually bothered to read the article and instead decided to crap on Serena? Her camp have said nothing about whether they will have him banned from the matches. The article states that it’s up to the UMPIRE to say nah I don’t want their matches.

Tennis Australia, which runs the Australian Open, would not be drawn on what it would do should Williams officially request Ramos not umpire any of her matches and the Williams camp did not respond when asked if she will make such a request. But Richard Ings, a former professional umpire, said umpires will usually take the lead when it comes to managing awkward situations.

“Say an umpire has a tough match with a player,” he told the Observer. “The player is angry, blames the umpire, says ‘you will never work a match again’. It is obvious that if the umpire does that player in the next match or next week that there will be a problem. So the umpire will simply take a break from umpiring that player.

When the pro umpire arrives at a tournament they update the supervisor if there are any players they are having a break from. May be none or one or two, whatever. And the supervisor schedules other qualified umpires that week for those matches.”

The article says it’s at the UMPIRES discretion who they want to have a break from. Seriously people, read before posting.

I’m assuming if they did that then they would have to have only men umpiring the men’s matches right? Otherwise, male umpires are getting potentially massively screwed over.
Isn’t it sexist that women umpires don’t usually officiate men’s matches?

He'll be driving trams in Lisbon. They never go off the rails.
If the driver follows the rules and is so focused like Ramos who keeps his eyes on the coaches and the surrounding, the tram won't go off rails.

Unless Sorena rams the tram or she drives the tram (the tram would be too heavy on the driver's side because she has a daughter who would also distract her from the job at hand).

Here's all the proof you need to see how sexism is rampant in Tennis officiating:

The hilarious thing is that this actually kinda proves Serena’s point. Men dominate almost every field EXCEPT coaching yet think of all those male players who we’ve known over the years who’ve gotten away with coaching and such (there’s a certain number 1 player who was notoriously known for this). I don’t defend what Serena did and it was way too far but this doesn’t prove much to me. Men are fined more for bashing their racquets and swearing more than the women? Wow I’m shocked! STUNNED! It’s definitely improper punishment and not the fact that men definitely smash their racquets and swear more :p that last bit was sarcasm by the way.

Come on.

No.

It doesn’t support Serena’s contention at all.

If anything it provides very very strong evidence that in this sport:

1) men are not favored in general by officials

2) women look for solutions in support and help more than men. Thus coaching violatons.

3) men look for solutions in anger and abuse and control more than women. Thus just about every other violation.

And I would say the history of the world also hints at this.

LOL...

i just had encounters with spider webs when i was making hurricane preparations on my house.
Grab some of that six month residual spider spray stuff and put it around the window frames and perimeter etc. Difficult to live without it in Australia but it would be useful anywhere. Good brands work against ants for a couple of months too.
