Tiafoe to Replace JMDP in Laver Cup

I hope that everyone of importance withdraws, so that that glorified exo dies in its infancy.

I agree with you. It seems mean, but events like this are not increasing the visibility of tennis.

I would like players like Djoker and Roger and Rafa that have earned approx. $100 million to do something to increase the visibility of the sport. They should be giving back to the sport that has made them multi millionaires1 It is pathetic that so many people around the world have to work to find out where they can watch tennis on TV or internet. Plus, a viewer likely has to pay to stream events.

If tennis were more popular it would be on network TV or available on the internet for a very LOW fee. American Football is on numerous channels and yet the players complain of brain injuries and Americans don't like the players anymore either1 makes no sense to me.

That's what Federers "Match for Africa" was for. He raised 2.5 million dollars doing just that one event.

On the sport/network TV side of things, that's likely well beyond their control to change things. That greed isn't going to go away, and Fed/Nadl/Djoker/not even Mury GOAT can change that.

I feel like most tennis I can find on network tv, especially if we are counting the tennis channel in that group.

I don't disagree with what you're saying as much as I am not convinced they can give anything more than they already have.

Edit: I realize the Laver Cup isn't everyone's cup of tea but I personally loved last years installment, personally.

This exhibition is a joke. I am still a Fed fan but I have lost a lot of respect for this money grab.

Plus, Tiafoe dropped out of a real tournament next week in Asia so that he could play. Shouldn't he receive a fine? What was his excuse? I have to go to Chicago to get a bigger payday than I would likely make at your tournament?

Serena increased the "visibility of the sport" last weekend and some people got upset. You can't win. :(

Rafa should come over and set up my TV for me on the right channel and make sure the stream is full HD. No buffering delays either.

PS, FEDR and his management :D at that lowball $100 million figure.

Jack Sock is in. What more could you want?
LOL. Only has to play one singles match and will probably play every doubles match where he's one of the best. Brilliant pick by McEnroe and one that nearly won it for the World team last year.o_O

Mac really likes Tiafoe's potential and so he's picked him. Tiafoe is 38th in ATP race so who has JMac slighted?:
Jarry at 36 (his alternate)
De Minaur at 33
Millman at 30
Medvedev at 26 (Russians at St. Pete event)
Shapo at 25 (Playing St. Pete)
Chung at 22
Khach at 21 (Russians at St. Pete event)
Raonic at 15
Nishikori at 10

Really? Well good cause its a dumb tournament.

I would argue if I could.....

actually I ended up going to both sessions on Friday, since the tickets were really cheap. And I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I never really watch exhibition sport ever, I would rather watch high school athletics for 'something' than pros playing for nothing. It still is an exhibition - there are no ranking points given - but there's no exho antics: no stupid trick shots, conversations, forced arguments, etc. I do not know if the results are staged or not - but the truth is that team Europe came back in few matches being hopelessly down while the overall score has them well ahead already, so maybe they do care?

The black court looks fantastic, there's not a bad seat in United Center (which is a well known fact already), two matches per session is just perfect amount of tennis, scoring system makes it possible for a team to still win it even if they are way behind after two days, all good. Since there's only one match at a time I no longer have FOMO symptoms and do not have to roam around the courts as I would have normally done. They all seem to enjoy themselves, if only Borg showed any signs of life....

If del Potro was playing it would have been perfect. Team World definitely misses a sure-win player and he would be a pretty good bet in any match. So far Anderson looked the best player on that team - but let's wait till he plays singles.

Goffin vs. Schwartzman was awesome. I mean all pros strike the ball so cleanly - but these two have similar styles, long points, solid on both sides, it was fun. Tiafoe was outmatched.

So it is kind of ...... fun??

They should have McEnroe playing against Borg if there's 12-12 tie at the end.

btw - why do they call the other team 'Team World'? Isn't Europe part of the World?

Ok I will admit this. Its nice for a major town like Chicago to get a tournament like this. Helps tennis in general. Oh and isn't the Ryder cup sort of like this except opposite. They have USA v internationals or is it USA v Europe I can't remember.

Wow, so many anti-pro people on this forum. Guess we ought to return to the amateur era.

Not sure I understand the full crux of your post. Then again it's 1 in the morning and I'm fried.

Well its 1pm here and I havent had my afternoon nap so I dont know what I mean either. o_O

In any case, I cant think of a good reason anyone would want Laver Cup to fail. If it generates interest and income, its good for the sport, period. If we were so against pro players making money since the beginning, lawn tennis would have got nowhere. Pros split off, foregoing their chances to play Wimbledon, Roland Garros, the USO and the AO because they dreamt a bigger future for the sport, touring endlessly to see this dream a reality. The namesake of Laver cup understands this well.

If we're going to deny the potential for the sport to grow in favor of the old format of the 4 grandslams, then we may as well return to the amateur era of tennis, where players were not supposed to waste their time making money despite the potential to. Lawn tennis would have stayed as a fringe rich person's sport.

Well said, and I agree 100 percent.

I've enjoyed both installments of the Laver Cup immensely.

It really seems to bring out the best in everyone as well. The matches are all entertaining but it's also nice having an event without the stakes of a GS or other huge match.

Thanks for clarifying as well.

Denies Feds USO in 09 now denying his Laver Cup over and over again

Federer should impose a heavy fine on Del potro for this absence, and well as loss of ATP ranking points for anyone invited who declines.
Nadal should also be punished I think (after much consideration).
