Ćorić to expose Federer's false dawn.

I really feel that Roger is entering his prime at 37-years old.

I wouldn't be surprised if he grabbed another 8 Grand Slam titles within the next decade.

However, Roger has hit a stumbling block in the Shanghai Masters: Namely, Borna ''I'm young enough to be your son'' Ćorić.

Borna will win this one in 3 sets, and dent the aspirations of young Rog.

Federer for me showed glimpses of his 2017 season form in the Nishikori match and Coric is not as good as Nishikori. If Federer can bring that form into this match I don't see him losing to Coric on a fast hard court. My only concern for Federer would be fatigue. He looked a little tired towards the end of that second set yesterday.

Now after Djokovic beat Zverev I am afraid that Federer might lose against Coric.

I expect Federer to bring it. Djokovic aside, he has his own score to settle with Coric.

I would be surprised if you are sober.

you were very wrong on this prediction. Coric blew roger away in straight sets.

I am not going to say "I told you so". Federer looked scared. My take is that he would play better if he played first without knowing who is in the final.

You just did.

Sorry, but I will always back the champions mentality, whether it is Federer, Djokovic, Nadal....you don't win as much as they do if you chicken out from facing their rival. He looked sluggish, and didn't use his shots until the very last game. After three tough baseline matches for a 37 old, I need to be expect these things will happen more and more.

I am not saying that he deliberately tanked. I am saying that his subconscious killed him.

definitely comical yet offensive to real Fed fans.

Let's hope that Coric can beat Djokovic tomorrow. We got one of the hated out; ABZ = Anyone But Zverev. Now beating Djokovic is the last step.

But still Fed's subconscious killed him?

It is not that Federer lost, it is manner of it. From his prospective, he played tactically wrong and mentally was not in the right place. However, this is his problem. Coric played superbly. Tomorrow is 50:50.

Federer played very well the first 3 matches but today came out flat and seemingly could never turn the engine on. I love how none of you have anything to say about Federer when he's winning but when he has one bad match there are a dozen threads either started or brought back. Y'all are ridiculous.

Into the final he goes, as the new world number two when rankings come out on Monday.

I think he has a matchup issue with Coric that he is going to have to solve tactically. Federer usually figures guys out eventually. The only problem there is he's 37 and time is not on his side to be figuring guys out.
No, he doesn't. Coric's talent is catching top players playing crapola and vulturing wins.

Federer didn't have any vulture wins in Shanghai. It would be more reasonable to say Coric however had a vulture win today. Federer had his first bad match this tournament and Coric took advantage, that's a vulture win. Medvedev, Bautista and Nishikori all played well the first 3 matches but Roger was better.

It's absurd to call every win of Federer's a vulture win and every loss proof that he's not even at mug level anymore.

Well when Coric plays well he plays an awful lot like Djokovic. So there's your match up issue. The thing is that Fed isn't capable of peak defence these days. And his penetrating offence game is rarely on these days.
And in such a situation when a player like Coric plays the way he did today Federer can't do anything. It isn't exactly a matchup issue. It is just that the guy was too good from the back of the court. He didn't miss much. FH. BH. All peaking. Serve was untouchable at times. He had a great feel to his game. The BH lob and the volleys. Everything was working for him.

Federer's offence game works when the ball comes easily to him. He thrives on short balls. Djoker counters this by hitting to Fed's feet and as he stands so close to the baseline he can't do anything but return the ball with a chip backhand or something. And then he is already out of the rally because he has hit a short ball which is about to be pounded by Djoker.
That's the same thing that happened with Coric today. He did all the things peak Djoker would do to Fed.

No. Does it matter?
It does man. It does.
The win was not just because Fed played bad. Obviously he wasn't at his best but this win was due to Coric playing excellent. He didn't play like the world no. 19. He played like a top 5 player which is quite evident given that he is one of the two last men standing here in Shanghai.

Good post. When Fed was younger he could back off the baseline a little to adjust to the this because he had the speed to make up for any court he was giving up from side to side. Hard to do that now. I believe it could work against Coric since he's not as good of a shotmaker as Djokovic. Federer had trouble with Murray and Simon too. He had to solve them. Now he has to rely on his skills a little too much which doesn't work against an endless counterpuncher unless Fed is redlining.

I was talking about Coric.

I don't buy it. He has trouble every time he plays him.
He's mostly played him this year when he struggled against most players. In IW he didn't have a fh, in Halle he was struggling more against Paire but should have straight setted Boric but brain farted in the second set, and in Shanghai he struggled against Medvedev and his pigeon RBA.

I agree Federer hasn't played his best in quite some time. Still he usually manages to beat lesser players more times than not. With Coric it seems he can't find a solution to beat him when he's not at his best. He should still beat him imo. A plan B if you will.

That’s the norm here and has been for years. Octo and Clayqueen always invade the Fed match threads when he’s losing. It’s predictably hilarious. You can minimize the Djoker fans Hubris by putting the more egregious ones on ignore. None of them have watched tennis for more than 5-10 years but think they’re omniscient on the sport, past greats and anything in between.
