@Sentinel 's turmeric thread ( https://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/index.php?threads/turmeric-curcumin-good-or-useless.627497/ ) led to me checking out CBD Oil. Frickin confusing subject ... the following is what "I think I know" after looking into it. Please correct me where I am wrong.

Read a couple of articles ... links at the bottom.

Short version of what I think I know at this point:

- hemp oil ain't cbd oil, and hemp oil ain't what you are after

- hemp oil is extract from hemp plant seeds

- cbd oil comes from hemp and marijuana flowers, leaves and stems

- cbd extract process harder than hemp seed oil extract process

- more concentration of cbd in hemp plant than marijuana plant, minus the TLC concern, so get the cbd from hemp plant

- looks like 250mg of cbd per ounce is a good starting point for being in the cbd game

- looks like Amazon is strictly in the Hemp Oil game with deceiving 3rd party sellers/industry. I don't think you will find one actual CBD legit product (maybe you get traces of CBD) on Amazon. They even use phrases like "Hemp Oil full spectrum".

I am interested in trying CBD oil (actually salve or cream) on my mild case of right big toe hallux limitus. I do not have any sharp pain, just notice the joint during the day. I put biofreeze on the joint right before tennis, and do not notice the toe (much) playing tennis.

My plan was to drop the biofreeze for a month, and use the CBD daily and see if I notice a difference. I'm an Amazon Prime guy ... so first stop Amazon. Actually purchased, and then cancelled something called HempRich yada yada yada. After getting input from a friend, and doing a little research ... looks like the Amazon products are strictly Hemp oil and not CBD.

So ... leaves local or a different online website. My friends (mentioned in other post) use this ... and claim it's a reputable company.

https://cbdamericanshaman.com/equine-ointment

Sounds like horse strength ... don't think I need that. :D

I checked out a local CBD store ... and a jar of salve (I think 2 oz ... don't know strength) was $50. Not cheap ... but in my case I'm just dabbing a little joint so might last forever. They had a sample container (smaller than a carmex container) for $15 ... so you could try it before buying the $50 jar. I am going to check out a second store, and also check out the website listed above. I thought others might have info on the topic.

Surprised there isn't some aching tennis player cbd feedback/experience.

I bought some cbd cream ... 250mg per oz, and will update results here. At this point the plan is once a day (morning) big toe application replacing biofreeze.

First impression after two uses is it is fast ... if not faster than biofreeze at immediately masking the dull discomfort. I used it the first time yesterday afternoon ... and it seemed to make me not notice the toe the rest of the day. Maybe placebo ... will watch.

Been reading about this as patients have been asking about it. Short answer is not many randomized controlled trials but LOTS of claims that it helps MANY things. Many canbabinoids in hemp and marijuana. Unclear which ones or combination of ones with or without THC act where in the body and to what if any effect. Hemp plants by definition have very low THC and CBD oil derived as such is considered non psychoactive and hence legal for sale in all states and over internet. Marijuana derived CBD oil contains varying levels of CBD and THC and as such is legal only where marijuana is legal. Lots of debate as to whether hemp or marijuana CBD oil are equally “effective” whatever that means. There is one FDA approved medical now however derived from CBD oil for seizures however. So buyer beware at present but much more clarification to likely come soon.

Buddy of mine said it was very effective on his patellar tendonitis. His PT wasn’t deabilitating but very painful until the CBD oil and couple weeks rest.

1 week update:

I have changed to twice a day, rather than once in the morning. I can't say my toe joint feels any better. I also now think biofreeze works better/quicker to mask soreness. I still intend to give it a full month test.

If you have the chance, try a CBD product you can ingest. I’ve read and heard great results.

I might try that after this test with the cream, but it seems my toe joint is a good test for cbd. The joint is right below the surface, easy to isolate.

One month update:

I will not be buying CBD ointment again. I have used it everyday for a month, and have not seen any improvement with mild hallux limitus in right toe. I will just go back to daily biofreeze, and continue with daily turmeric.

no ointment, ingestion CBD user here. Hoping to cure all of my chronic mental and physical ailments. or should I say 'ale'ments. Never know unless you try. Everything appears "experimental" so im "experimenting" with dosages, time of the day, etc.

I wonder if it would be good for tennis forum addiction? I guess not ... at least not rubbing it on a toe.

What exactly is a CBD-infused topical cream?
The ointment is made from infusing high-quality cannabis flowers in some kind of quality oil—coconut or olive typically—which extracts the active compounds, either CBD, THC, or both depending on the type of hemp used. This oil is then blended with other therapeutic herbs, like arnica or lemongrass essential oils, that are well-known pain relievers.

If you read the ingredient list, often everything in the jar is straight from mother earth. As long as that's indeed the case with the cream you have your eye on, the formula is immensely safe, chemically, says Gregory Gerdeman, Ph.D., neurophysiologist who researches cannabinoid biology and pharmacology at Eckerd College in Saint Petersburg, FL.. And since they're formulated to be topical—absorbing into the top layer of skin—and not transdermal—which would pass through the skin and into your bloodstream—there's no risk of getting high, Gerdeman explains. (P.S. Here's How Marijuana Affects Athletic Performance.)

"When it comes to cannabis-based topicals for muscle soreness or other pain relief, there's absolutely no reason why it should be a big deal to try," he says.

I understand about the drops and edibles. What allows the CBD oil to pass through the skin and make it to the target site??
Great question. Skin is a very effective protective barrier to prevent absorption of many things. As such very few things actually effectively are absorbed to deep tissues topically.

I will stick with the Bio-Freeze... I know that works. I use it all the time. This stuff at best would numb your skin. Since it is not trans-dermal it is not doing much at all. To get things through the skin you need a transport agent..

Well ... if you judge it by my toe joint, it doesn't. ;) I assume you are asking the same question "how does biofreeze go through the skin over my toe joint"? They mix the CBD in the lotion, ointment which absorbs in the skin like all lotions.

I'm sticking with Biofreeze also ... but you figure it is just numbing. The hope with cbd lotion is it would help knock out inflammation beyond just numbing. Maybe taking cbd orally works better, but I am not interested in that right now ... too early for me to trust it. It seemed pretty safe to just rub the cbd lotion on my toe joint daily for a month.

Biofreeze is an analgesic that is useful for treating not only sprains and sore muscles, but also arthritis and other types of joint pain. It comes in gel, spray or roll-on form, and is a type of cryotherapy (cold therapy). Its active ingredient is menthol (from the mint family of plants), which causes your brain to interpret the nerve signals being sent as a sensation of cold, triggering a reduction in inflammation.

The cold therapy of Biofreeze works by causing ligand molecules to attach themselves to your nerve’s cold receptors, which effectively helps to numb the area, interfering with pain signals traveling to the brain. Its menthol also induces vasodilation, which increases blood flow to the injured area, allowing cellular waste products to be swept away more efficiently and for healing oxygen and nutrients to be delivered to the cells.

Other herbal ingredients included in Biofreeze are Ilex Paraguariensis (also known as Yerba mate, a plant native to South America with antioxidant properties), Arnica, Calendula, Aloe, Boswellia, Green Tea, Burdock, Lemon Balm and vitamin E. All of these have been used for centuries in treating tissue injuries such as bruises, sprains and strains. Camphor, another ingredient in Biofreeze, has both numbing and antiseptic properties.

You can massage the gel into your skin (or apply it with the roll-on or spray) up to four times a day. It can also be useful before any type of therapy, such as chiropractic care or physical therapy. It can help relieve the pain that would interfere with you getting the most out of your treatment.

"triggering a reduction in inflammation"

I think with daily use that is a "maybe" ... but I find it works quick on my mild hallux limitus (arthritis ... slight bone spurs). I started with the gel, and now use the roll-on. I put it on right before I head to the tennis court.

If you do some research, one would find it does almost none of those things.. or there is very little clinical evidence to support those claims. This CBD oil is on the market for two main reasons.. money and politics. Does get you high and there is evidence it is gateway drug to stronger meds. It is also habit forming, contrary to what folks think. Just attended a seminar given in my area by the U of Buffalo School of Med.

Stuff works... :). I have two repaired knees and OA in my back and neck. Helps also since you can reduce the number of OTC pain meds you have to take.

You have to burn down like a qp to get results, not the stuff you get on sale for $10. You want the black oil like from xfiles.

Have a spot on my face from the sun, little dab and its gone. Just dont wanna blow up house making it :)

I've been taking CBD oil for the last few months and seeing great results! Initially looked in to it for my sleep issues but have found it to be helping other pains and inflammations, in particular, my tennis elbow. I take sublingually but the brand I take is also offered as a cream.

Glad to hear it ... maybe it will prove out that topical is not the way to go. It's kind of the CBD wild wild west right now, so I will wait and see before taking it orally.

Since this product is not FDA approved.. tested or regulated. One has no idea what they are taking. Might as well just get a bag and roll a fattie...:)... Blaze up..

You will be glad to know my toe joint is much happier after Biofreeze the last several days. My toe needs to smoke a joint. I buy Turmeric from Sam's Club ... so I'm sure there will be a day I buy CBD in some form ... just not today.

One of the nurses suggested that I try this for pain some time ago and many other folks suggested it to me as well but I just endured the pain. I've run into lots of people that swear by it but I grew up when the message on this stuff was very negative. We do have hemp seeds in the refrigerator - you can get big bags of it at Costco. I didn't know that it had CBD oil in it - though it may only be a small amount.

Until the FDA gets control of this CBD oil.. I am not touching this stuff. It is like the wild west with this product. There are lots of safe products on the market that work just as well without the risks. In addition, if you are on any other meds... how do you know about possible drug interactions? If you have chronic pain it can be managed lots of ways without putting yourself at risk. There are no studies on this stuff. You have not idea about the dosing? If this stuff is pure or cut with something else?

You can lose weight... do some PT? Eat better? Follow a diet that reduces inflammation? I know that seems radical in today's world..

A lot of folks I chat with have Stage 4 cancer and aren't sure whether or not they will survive.

I did look into a place that sells it. It's a locked door with keycode access and it's by appointment only. I only looked because I shop at a place next to it and was curious. And, they have free Wifi - that I could use outside the place.

My threshold (taking CBD orally) isn't FDA ... it's "more time". Every morning I take turmeric, krill oil and Ocuvite equivalent ... none under FDA as far as I know. There is risk with FDA approved drugs ... and our food supply. Turns out Chipolte's and many FDA approved blood pressure pills were more risky than smoking marijuana. It's all risk reward. If I had a kid suffering from terrible seizures ... and medical marijuana stopped seizures in many children, that is a different risk vs reward calculation than my minor toe joint pain.

fyi ... lots of people in the US buy prescription drugs that come from Canada, UK, etc... not under FDA because of US drug price gouging. Another risk vs reward choice.

CBD is used to control the side-effects of chemo. If you're on chemo, you still have a shot. It might be that chemo can shrink the tumors so that they can be surgically removed or that you're on the chemo for life program. People with pain from their tumors no under treatment are usually given much stronger stuff as the odds of long-term survival are very low.

Did the drops under the tongue. Didnt notice any differences. Slept the same maybe a bit more relaxed.

Earthing with a pillowcase made a bigger difference.

I've bought CBD Oil from this Vermont company twice because it was cheaper than others I found. I believe it's a reputable company and they are an organic farm. I buy the 600mg bottle for $30, and received them in a couple of days both times (I live in NC). I take it to help me sleep when I'm stressed (which it does), not for pain, so I can't speak to that. https://www.sunsoil.com/
