Luxilon Natural Gut 1.25 String advise

Anyone with experience with Natural Gut 1.25 from Luxilon? It is currently about $22.47 per set @TW. The price is very attractive. It is even cheaper than KLIP Legend Natural Gut.

I am thinking of purchasing 30 sets for my kids but they are very busy with school work in the next three weeks so they don't have time to try out the new strings and I don't want to see the deal run out.

Currently they are using either KLIP or Babolat Natural Gut on the main and Luxilon 4G soft on the cross.

Thanks in advance.

IMO, its a steal at the sale price. To be clear, I'm not really a fan of the new Babolat Gut, preferring Pacific Classic or better yet, Pacific Tough Gut, but Luxilon is good alternative, especially at $22.50 a pack.

Remember also that TW will take the unused strings back at full refund if they do not like them.

What gauge are they currently using now? I personally thought the 1.25 was too powerful for my liking. 1.30 has better control

They are playing with Babolat VS team Natural Gut 17 on the main @50lbs and Luxilon 4G soft on the cross @48lbs.

I've always thought that 1.25 give you better cut at the ball but the string will break faster because it is thinner. 1.30 will not give you a good cut a the ball because the string is thicker and therefore takes longer to break. Is that not true?

Thanks for the heads-up, that is a steal! Just bought a couple-year supply :)

I use the 1.25 gauge in full-bed at 56# in my ProStaff 97s, along with string savers to maximize string life.

1.25 Lux is lower powered than other full-bed guts that I have tried including Tough Gut, VS, and Klip. It also frays nicely on the outside of the stringbed and gets great spin on the ball after an hour or so break-in period.

I prefer Tough Gut in hybrid setups, as the coating is more durable than the coating on Lux. But Lux is my favorite for full bed.

Do you prestretch the lux?, just bought some , never used before, currently stringing cyclone tour around 48, any recommendation on tension for fb and in mains with poly cross?

Prestretch - yes.

Tension of gut/poly - there are many pages of great info in the official gut/poly thread.

Pre-Stretch at what percentage? On my stringing machine, I have the option of 5%, 10% and 15%. What do you recommend?

My stringer pre-stretches by hand.

I would just pick one of your options and stick with it... In theory the 15% (if it doesn't break the gut) could mean less tension loss over the life of the stringjob.

Maybe someone else can chime in on the stringing machine options.

1.25 is softer, more powerful and has better touch and feel than 1.30.

1.30 has more control, better tension maintenance and predictability

1.25 will break quicker yes, but the durability is impressive with both gauges so i wouldn't worry about that when making a decision. It's all about what works for your kids. Maybe try both 1.25 and 1.30.

For me personally I liked the 1.30 MUCH better than the 1.25 though. Like night and day difference. Natural Gut is already a powerful string so I did not need the extra power 1.25 offered.

Sampras used a very thin natural gut (1.20 gauge or 1.22?) and had to string at 75+ lbs to control his shots, where as other pros who used 1.30 could string at a normal tension (i.e Federer at 57 lbs)

If your kids use a lot of finesse/touch and come to net often I would say 1.25

If your kids play a lot on the baseline 1.30

FYI: I tried to order additional Luxilon NG as Christmas gifts for friends and coworkers but they will not be available until 12/22 :(. Fortunately, I ordered about 20 on Sunday.

No personal experience but I have a friend on the Wilson string team and he's told me about it. He says it's a firmer gut than VS or standard Wilson gut. It also has a more yellow color. Luxilon also did something cool and put a green mark on the center of the sets so that you don't have to measure out to find middle, you can just cut at the green and you're set.

how many sets is 1 year supply for you ?? Also if you just put it aside for more than 1 year, even 2-3 years,, wouldn't the gut go bad ?? where would you store it to keep it that long ??

Won't go bad as long as it is temp controlled and not sitting in direct sunlight all the time. As long as the packs are sealed it'll last forever.

People find 20+ year old packs of Babolat gut pre BT7 all the time that was in storage that are still usable. Barring damage to the pack it should still be good. Even an open pack, if you put it in a ziplock and keep it out of direct sun light will be fine to use a year later. I just put in a half set that has been sitting around for at least 6 months and it played really well.

As long as you do not let air and humidity into contact with the string prior to usage, it will be fine. The bag is designed to keep humidity out. Just place it in a cool room temperature and it will last a long time. I still have Babolat strings from three years ago in unopened bags.

I bought 30 sets :)

That should be around 3 years worth at half the regular price...

Just keep it sealed up somewhere in your house (dark, cool closet is ideal) and it will last for many years...

that is ridiculous. in hybrid with poly. poly will go dead or cut up your gut in 3-4 weeks max. your 4 sets will last you 3 month
I am using a round poly in Prince Tour XR/XP so it won't cut through. It's winter time and I play only once or twice a week for max 3 hours. If it's snows, then I can't even play that much. When spring/summer arrives, I will play more. Will see how the next few months goes. You maybe right after all it may not last 2 years.

Damn! 30 sets would last me a good time. I can get 2-3 months out of a full bed.

even TW review (Chris) mentioned he prefer full bed of poly. I prefer a full bed of poly or full bed natural gut. Gut might get shredded or poly playability goes down before either one break. The hybrid option will work better if you can afford it. I feel one string (single or two piece stringing) give a consistent feel.

That's the hope!

I'm also wondering why the big sale - is Lux going to change something about their gut so they are clearing out old inventory? (The same sale price is internet-wide.)

$22 can't be a profitable price point for this string!?!

Thus, since I like the string, I figure I'd better stock up for a while in case something changes and I can't get it anymore...

For me, the hybrid doesn't maintain tension nearly as well as the full bed of gut. I only get 10-12 hours or so out of a hybrid setup before I have to change it out due to tension loss making it unplayable for me.

This is even with a pre-stretched poly like MaxPower. Probably, because the poly (even pre-stretched) loses tension faster than the gut...

I'm glad you like the string! How long does it last for you full bed? I know you said you strung it at 57 lbs but it was a bit too powerful after a while what tension are you at now?

57# was definitely too powerful on my RF97A (I even tried 65# but couldn't control it), but the power is just right on my ProStaff 97s at 57#.

Also using lots of string savers preventatively, which add approximately a couple pounds of tension. Without string savers I'm sawing through the mains in 12-15 hours. With string savers much longer - I don't know how long yet as the 3 rackets I have them installed on haven't broken a string yet!

The string savers stiffen up the stringbed a bit, but I don't mind as it actually feels more natural to me that way (I didn't grow up using the old-school gut strings).

It's Christmas! You'd be surprised at how profitable string is. Luxilon's whole line is on sale, not just the gut. I doubt they'd launch natural gut without being sure to keep it in the line.

Have you seen nat gut (any brand) at 50% off very often???

It seems like some brand of poly is constantly on sale, but nat gut seems to be on sale much less frequently, and not usually at this steep of a discount...

Lux Natural gut taken off all the major websites! I think they forgot to exclude it?  I was just about to buy a few sets but those that bought 30 sets must've cleared stores out. Anybody have a few extra, I'd love to try some at $22!

Yeah, that sale price was just a little too good to last for very long :)

After sleeping on it and reading about how long people were successfully storing their unopened gut, I ended up ordering some more for a total of 50 sets :)

I also still have a bad taste in my mouth from running out of Tough Gut (my favorite before trying Lux) and not being able to order any more (not currently in production apparently). Anyway, decided to make sure that wasn't the case for Lux gut :)

Nat gut supply has a way of ebbing and flowing... Both Klip and Pacific are known for nat gut unavailability issues...

I tried every tennis site imaginable... Luxilon reps must've been heavy on the phones yesterday demanding that sale be removed from the gut!

Well, my 3 packs of Lux gut will come in tomorrow. I figured I'd give it a try. It's all @ByeByePoly fault. I fell for his Jedi mind trick. I'll go through a set of gut in 2 mos. So I should be good for 1/2yr. But maybe Lux will last longer than Legend?

What would I do with 50packs???
