AO court speed observations.

Rod Laver Arena is very fast! The other two show courts are medium, and the outside courts are medium/slow. The only difference from what the players are saying is that Rod Laver Arena this year is very fast like last year, but this year the ball skids through much more then last year. Same quick court as last year except it skids more this year.

Nobody here actually knows what they are talking about in terms of court speed and playability. Until there is a general consensus reached among the player opinions anything said on here is a made up based off of television perception that is likely biased. Pretty blunt but that is the truth.

If anything it looks about the same as last year.

when i asked someone in the pro match sectin they said it was faster than last year..

last year the courts got faster as the tournament progressed.. if they are already faster than that then federer is going to have a field in 2 weeks in the final..

few other posters in other forums have also said it is faster than last year..

this forum is so damn slow..
I suggest you to send a post, wait for a minute or two (even though the "progress bar" is still active), refresh the page and see if the post has appeared. That's how I avoid the double posting.

Difficult to judge pace or fastness of the court on TV, but I feel bounce is pretty good. What others think about the bounce of the courts?

If RLA is faster than outside courts, then it's a welcome change. In other three Slams main court is always slowest amongst all.

Outside courts look fast on tv. Will check it out in person tomorrow

Apparently show court 2 is the fastest. Darren Cahill explained that the pigeons love that court for some reason, and so it needs constant sweeping from the droppings. Thus in turn taking off that bit of coarseness. Was actually funny to hear Luke Jensen hold back from taking that somewhere not appropriate for US network TV.

What I do is send the post and then wait for a couple of seconds and go back to GPPD, if after that you click on the same thread again, your post Should be there. It works for me and is a quick remedy for at least this fortnight on TTW.

Heard commentators saying court where Edmund played Anderson was a bit slow since their rallies were so long and then I heard them saying Rod Laver arena was fast and bounced low so Isner had trouble getting to the balls.

After day one observations of speed are welcome. They have changed balls this time. Is there any difference?

it looks fast during the day while in the night session it actually seemed slower but I think that is the ball going slower

Nobody here actually knows what they are talking about in terms of court speed and playability. .

That's why we rely on what commentators who have played on it have said:

Gilbert: medium fast, dead Dunlop balls
J-Mac: "sort of" fast on RLA, "slower" on outer courts, no comment on Dunlop balls
Cahill: medium quick, conditions much slower in hotter weather, fluffy balls
P-McEnroe: same as last year, balls can get dead after 3-4 games
-------------

If someone claims RLA is "very fast," post a link to the source who has played on the court.

sounds like the commentators don't think its faster than last year, maybe even slower because of the "dead" balls :)
that makes Rafael's serving all the more impressive, his 1st Serve averaged 119mph, and 67% 1st Serves in.
Federer's 1st serve averaged 120mph, and 56% in.

Yea, those Dunlop balls are a real bummer.... they fluff up superfast and they get real slow and real heavy.... but good thing is it is really hot temperatures in Melbourne. hot weather means faster conditions.

Roger's serve is considered one of the greatest ever and un-returnable. This is the greatest evidence that you don't need 140 mph serve to be considered great serve. 120 MPH with accuracy is still a great serve even at ATP levels. That is why 100 MPH serve with accuracy at amateur level like 4.5 or 5.0 is a virtual ACE.

Also last year, surface speed was super fast, I didn't think they would make that faster

It's not considered one of the greatest-ever serves and his ace count is usually fairly modest. It's also not "unreturnable," unless he's playing on the WTA. His serve last year from July-November was absolutely AWOL and pathetic.

It was AWOL cause he didn't have accuracy due to lower back spasms like me. Even at ATP level ,, 120 MPH serve with accuracy in the corner lline with disguise is ACE or Unreturnable. that is the point.

Both Ebden and Nadal said it's slow this time. According to Feder it's slower than Hopman and "ball doesn't move at night."

Might be more the crappy balls than any real court speed changes...... watching poor Deminaur trying to whack the ball through the court the other night was painful. For a guy with no big weapons it must drive you nuts trying to hit winners.

No one's unbeatable my man. Those conditions on hardcourt are certainly where he is strongest though.
Well may be i was overexcited after knowing speed of the court but he's undefeated against Nadal and Federer on plexicushion. Also danger man Stan the man is out and all the remaining players till are finals are mugs so i'm super confident about Nole lifting 2019 AO open trophy. i also feel this year he will beat Nadal on clay and complete cygs.

as long as Djokovic doesn't have to play Rafael, he should win every slam.
but we saw what happened last year, he played Rafael and almost lost Wimbledon, and he didn't play Rafael at the US Open so won easily:)

I'd say Gilbert's assessment sounds on the money to me. I dont think its as fast as when Mischa Zverev made the quarters in 2017, but Raonic seemed to be getting a fair bit of bang for his buck on RLA......

That's what happens when you serve 220+ and Kyrgios is returning. Kyrgios' serve wasn't effective at all.
