Jolly's Polys

Agreed, the more rectangular classic head shape is good on serve. Just allowed my grip a bit more leverage on kick serves. Other then that, really didn’t like it much especially switching grips to my 1hbh

If I hit a fh approach I kind of get lost changing grips on the way in.

And it feels weird on serve.

Well, I finally read this entire thread, and it was entertaining and informative.

I've actually done a couple racket changes since October after confirming it was the Babolat Pure Drive that was killing my arm/shoulder. While I love my Yonex VCORE 95s, I just nabbed three Head Liquidmetal Tour XLs (100 sq. in. on 16x19) in amazing condition, so I've been hitting with them for old time's sake (racket from high school). The person strung it a few months ago with BBO at 52# on the mains 50# on the crosses (i.e., Gasquet's setup), and I love it... I kinda want to abandon my Poly Tour Strike (1.30) reel even though it's a great string.

ANYWAYS.. If I were to sum up Jolly's Polys it would be:

  1. ALU Power 16L Silver: Would be your full bed of choice if money wasn't an issue. Only issue is playability drops off towards the end.
  2. Big Banger Original (1.30): More control than ALU and longer playability but ALU still better overall when fresh. You recommend dropping the tension more on this than ALU given it's stiffness.
  3. Babolat Ballistic Polymomo: Actually don't recall what you said too much on this string.
  4. Tier One Black Night: Best budget string that's below Luxilon but better than 90% of polys out there.

Is this accurate? I'm debating whether to buy a few more packs of BBO but curious about ALU given I've never used it.. (I know, blasphemy). I hit a heavy spin ball on the FH side, my OHBH is definitely flatter in comparison. I wrecked Isospeed Cream in a little over an hour, Volkl Cylone Tour lasted me about 8-10 hours before snapping, and Yonex Poly Tour Strike for some reason I'm not breaking. Recommendations given the above info?

Try the Jolly Rig II, ALU crosses and BBO mains.

All right. I'll post my thoughts on the infamous Jolly Rig II. I'll probably get ALU in a full bed first for science then try the JRII so I can see the characteristics combined. Keep up the good work!

And if you ever get a chance, give Poly Tour Strike a chance. Shapo's string of choice. I'd string it around 48 for your frame though. 46 if you're feeling ballsy.

Sounds good, I have connections with Yonex.

I'd string the hybrid maybe 2# looser than full ALU.

Jolly, have you tried ALU Power Soft? It ha better tension maintenance and spin supposedly, but I’m curious if it plays well or even if the above even matters if it goes dead just as fast or fafter than regular ALU Power.

I ended up ordering the regular and the 1.20 (feel) version. I'm curious if I can pop the 1.20m before it loses playability. Do you ever trade strings? I have a ton of my Strike reel left.

Soft doesn’t bite at the ball as much as ALU or Rough, but it’s slippery and still gets solid spin. When I’ve used it, I found that my ball sat up a bit more and the spin wasn’t as heavy. That said, it maintains playability longer than other lux offerings.

Good to know. Have you tried Feel?

Oh good, you’re starting with the ales first.. I suggest after you’re done with those, go on to the Dopplebock & Toasted Porter. Save the Wee Heavy for last since it’s the strongest and full bodied.

Mamma didn't raise no fool.

I started with the berry flavors to celebrate my mixed doubles wins then this was my favorite so far. Saving the porter for a red meat dinner.

So far I'm very impressed.

Since Thor is my spirit animal I'm thinking that this could be the new Jolly beer brand.

I float it a bit but usually my index knuckle is right on the bevel between eastern and semi-western, so I guess you would say extreme eastern?

J
Ok so that head handle would protrude into you thumb in a wierd way.
There is just no middle ground between semi and Eastern with that European grip.

I used prince as a kid and Wilson as an adult so I was just very used to the square shape.

I can hit ok with the Head grip, but the serve is a little weird. My main issue is when I hit a forehand approach I kind of get lost as it's awkward to find continental.

It's never hard to find conti on any FH with any shape of grip.

But let me tell you, if you are with the head/volkl grip for a long time you get caught in that kicker spin action that it requires a big grip change to hit a good slice.

Hey Jolly, been looking for some answers but haven't gotten any replies

How would you compare BBO vs ALU vs 4g?

Which is your favourite and why? And in your opinion if someone gave you a set of strings, would you take 4g or bbo

Thanks Jolly :) love the thread

ALU is best, BBO second best, 4G is trash.

ALU is the greatest string on the planet, BBO has terrific bite but stiff and low powered, I recommend stringing it 5lbs looser than an ordinary poly.

ALU breaks in 45 minutes for me so I use BBO mains to increase durability (substantially) and ALU crosses to get some extra pop off the stringbed.

Jolly my man, thankyou so much brother.

Ive been using BBO in my six one 18x20 and love it so much, love the bite. Just wondering why is 4g trash? Seems pretty similar to bbo theres been so many mixed reviews i've been reading. What would you say the main difference is? Thanks <3

4G has no bite and low power.
