Running behind schedule...prior match has just begun. Probably starting 1500EST.Tomorrow, streamed
12:50 EST Auger Aliassime - Karatsev (ATP Challenger Rennes)
Defeat earlier this evening for FAA in his first singles match at the Rennes Challenger in France where the no. 3 seeded Canadian was beaten by the unheralded 25-year-old Russian Aslan Karatsev in two sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Watching Felix the last few years, I really thought he was going to be something special. But every match he seems to get worse, it's very concerning.
I still think he will be good, but don't know if he has the tools to be anything special. I really hope he is the next big thing but his skills aren't progressing
I feel the same. I still think Shapovalov will be a champion but for Félix I'm not so sure anymore.
I also see a straight set lossLooking at highlights there's a lot to like just in terms of sheer strokes and athleticism.
What would you say the reasons are?
I have watched him some this last few years but not a whole lot. He still appears to have a lot of ability to me, but at the same time I'm not very interested in his game. It's not that exciting.

Still ahead of the rest in his bracket...
I also see a straight set loss
While I'm not surprised at Felix's loss today....he had a tough opponent playing at home...I think he hasn't had overall results as much as many had hoped because he puts to much pressure on himself (and we do too) and tightens up. He's got the skills. It's more of a mental block perhaps.
I hope we all forget about him for a couple of years, let expectations fall, and ultimately he will rise. How far will depend on if he can overcome fear of disappointing others. He is only 18, so maturity alone will help in this regard.
I'm not usually one to blame the coach (or give him too much credit) but I have to wonder if Felix is getting the best coaching he could. Fred Fontang is apparently a super nice guy and everybody loves him but he had Vasek Pospisil for three years back when Vasek showed so much promise and Vasek's career totally stalled and went downhill. While I'm not surprised at Felix's loss today....he had a tough opponent playing at home...I think he hasn't had overall results as much as many had hoped because he puts to much pressure on himself (and we do too) and tightens up. What is Felix made of ?? We will see in the 5th rubber....... We will see if he has any future in ATP
maybe this will trigger it ?!Has FAA stalled? seems he needs a breakthrough.
Can't seem to find highlights of this; anybody had better luck?
A win over Norbert Gombos has been the kindling that has lit the flame of superstardom for many a young tennis wunderkind.
My next job, non?1st time i see that !
the US in the late 80's probably... some chang-agassi combo, i guess ?Has a Davis Cup nation ever fielded a team so young as Shapo and FAA?
Chang (18) and Agassi (20) played DC together in 1990 to win it all. They were also the singles tandem a year earlier when they were 17 and 19 to match FAA/Shapo. It was a 1R tie before McEnroe and then Gilbert got the nods over Chang for QF/SF.the US in the late 80's probably... some chang-agassi combo, i guess ?
