Prince Phantom Pro and Phantom Pro100P

Thoughts on a poly/multi setup for the PP100P ?

I've been playing with PP100P for a few months now with a multi/syn gut hybrid. Overall, I really like the racket and I'm pretty happy with the string setup, but I'm ready to try a different string setup, mainly to get a little more spin.

As much as I like the playing characteristics of poly, I generally avoid it because of past shoulder issues when I use poly, which originated back to the days when I used to use a full bed of the original Big Banger.

Anyway, I was thinking of giving a poly/multi hybrid a try with Solinco Tour Bite Soft 17 @48 in the mains and Head Velocity either 16 or 17 @52 in the crosses.

I also have a set of YTex Quadro Twist 16L that I could use for the poly and Babolat Origin 16, Head Syn Gut PPS and Gosen Micro Sheep 16 that I could use for the crosses.

Thoughts ?

I’ve tried a ton of poly and also poly hybrid setups. For a while I stuck with tour bite on the mains and babolat origin on crosses. I’m currently now setup with isospeed cream and gosen OG sheep micro and it has so far been my favorite. A lot of feel, arm friendly, and decent spin.

I have a club with PlaySight near me and the data shows that spin is better with the latter setup. I don’t know if that is your objective. It wasn’t mine but for some reason, that’s what I found happened. I would more likely attribute it to it being a lower powered setup, hence more opportunities to really swing through the stroke.

Earlier in January one of my students, Christian Sigsgaard, who plays for the Texas Longhorns was home for vacation. We had a really good practice session which allowed me to put my Phantom Pro through a rigorous test. Christian is at present the number 4 ranked D1 player in the US. The club where I coach at has a very fast carpet that can really test your reflexes. Our practice session gave me an opportunity to find out how my Phantom Pro present setup would hold up against a heavy hitter. My frame is weighted up with 6 grams evenly placed at 3 and 9 o'clock. I have been exclusively using Technifibre Multifeel black 16 strung at 21kg (around 48lbs). The feel and control was so nice. The thing that really impresses me with this string is the spin. I don't use poly's because of their harsh nature, and to be honest I really don't feel the need with this string. Comfort, control and spin all rolled in one combined with one of the best feeling frames on the market makes for a sublime combination. I would really like to see more juniors using strings like Multifeel and more flexible frames for better arm care. Multifeel may not be the most durable string but playability is super.

What was the tension and gauge used with the PP 100P?

Excellent advice and as soon I’m set up I’ll let you know how the different string setups work. Issue I’m having now is I live in Bangkok and they are not selling prince rackets here anymore. I will prob order from overseas at some point but customs duties can be anywhere from reasonable to ridiculous in Thailand. Thanks again for all your input. Great thread !!
Make a trip to Singapore or have a visiting friend get a few from Singapore. That's where I got my 93P from.

has anyone tried a full set of babolat vs touch with a 100p?

Had it on a PP100P before switching to a 93P. Never tried multi in either frame except for demos though...never really liked the feel of multis.
Racquet feels less boardy and has more power (bigger sweet spot) and is more comfy as you'd expect...can't speak much to spin because I'm not a heavy topspinner.

I wish I had seen your post earlier. I visit Bangkok often for work even though I live in philly. When I’m there I hit at spin and slice. I could have brought some stuff for ya. Maybe on my next visit.

Very nice of you to offer. I’m always here except for the month of June. It would be so great if you can bring me some stuff for me. I have an account at TW so I can order over their website and mail it to you. Please let me know when you are coming back to Bangkok

literally just ordered another 100p a couple days ago and annoyed I never got a chance to try this out before my purchase.

Same here. I bought a couple of PP100P in the last month, to complement my 93P's and would have loved to have a look at the PP100 18X20 beforehand. Mind you, I really like the PP100P.

Hey,
sometimes Im feeling my elbow, and wondering to switch my Pure drive team to soft racquet. Would you recommend Phantom pro 100 for 3,5 -4.0 player? I used to play directional. Rarely using power

That's would be perfect. If you want even more control take the 18x20 or the 16x18 for better spin (and still massive control). (y)

Im a rather flat hitter so 18x20 sounds good, but its too heavy for me. I've read that pro 100 (16x18) has 8 strings in throat so maybe it will be good for flat hit. I'm wondering about clash, but reviews shows small sweetspot of clash, wich is not good for me

Demo all 3 of them. You may be surprised how well you can swing a heavier stick.

My shop has only Prince Phantom 100 to demo...
Someone try Phantom pro 100 with powerful string? For example with Prince premier touch? I'm curious about power that frame

EDIT: I've checked TW Univeristy and You are right. 18x20 is heavier than 16x18 but has more Head light so swingweight is slightly little bigger

I just sold my Phantom Pro to a friend. Not because I don’t like it, but because it was really helping his game and the handle was really too small for me. I still like it a lot (2nd favorite behind my Phantom 93P)

I’ve been demo-ing the Clash Tour, and have been having trouble keeping my groundstrokes in. I’ve heard that from some of the TW play testers as well. They have mentioned needing to really go for spin to keep the ball in play. But for me, that’s coming from an 18 x 20 93P, so I’m still adjusting to the Clash.

So it MAY not be best suited to a flatter game, but try them all out as mentioned. I’m intrigued by the new Pro 100 as well. Picking up the old Pro 100 to compare to the Clash yesterday, I’m still a Prince guy I guess. It just felt more to my liking.

Keep in mind though, it doesn’t have to be either/or. Babolat OR Phantom. Prince’s Tour series is pretty soft, too, and there are lighter and 18 x 20 options as well. The old Tour 100P is 18 x 20 ad right around 60 RA. The new ones have Twaron, so even though Tru are stiffer, they should still be easier on the arm.

Do you live in a country where you can get TW demos?

I had Tour 100P (2015) - nice frame, but I didn't feel the comfort which I'm now looking for. For me blade 98s 2015 is more comfortable than Tour 100P. I like that plush feeling when I hit the ball with blade

Hi, I have the Phantom Pro 100, 305gr unstrung. Was looking forward to the 18x20 but I see the weight at 337 strung (guess without over). What does this mean in terms of unstrung weight? 315 or 320gr? Cannot find yet unstrung specs. Thanks

Tried Phantom Pro 100 with a multi at 50lbs and was pleased with how I could flatten out shots. Then I went with my normal poly setup at 45lbs and it's more difficult to flatten out. I think you'd be fine with a powerful string as long as the tension isn't too low. That said, I know others have commented that they've had good success with multis at 45-48lbs. It's a great frame.

I bought 2 racquet only after reading reviews and was good. But I like trying different options, that's why I want try very comfortable frame. Stiff stick is good to hit fast balls, but it needs a lot of spin to keep ball in court, and when I hit out off sweetspot its not comfortable. Prince Tour 100P is good for precision shots and has all parameters good but none of them are very good :)

Do they not have any tennis shops in Poland? You'd think Eastern Europe would be teeming with them given the amount of tennis players they put out.
We have big tennis shop, they have over 100 racquet to test, but maybe Prince hasn't good representation in our country, so they have only 2 frames to demo.

Phantom Pro 100 18x20 with HDX 16 or Multifeel 16 is what you looking for.

It got a specific mention by Michelle in the latest Playtester VLOG, and also the 14x18 93P by Chris. I think that points to quite high chance of those two racquets getting reviewed.
Didn't they both say the written and video reviews were actively being worked on? I could have easily made that up

They are the key prince distributor, the reviews are coming, I’m sure. With the stats already up at T-University that’s a good sign. That said, I was hoping the 18 x 20 stats would be closer to the PP100P. :/ they’re even still behind the tour 100 18 x 20.

Assuming my math is right, the new PPP has a recoil weight of 170, which is considered to be just about ideal! (the 16x18 was 159)

Given that the twist weight didn't increase and SW not much either, I can assume that most of the additional 15 gram weight is in the handle.

that would also account for the 9 points HL balance as well.

Just reporting on the PP100P: just broke the Hyper G 17 which I had strung at 50lbs. It lasted me around 8 hours. The same string strung at 48lbs lasts me at least 12 hours before going dead, at which stage I have it cut. It never broke on me.

Bigger head / open string pattern, so no surprise here. I might have to go for the 16L to increase durability a bit. I like how the 17 plays, but 8 hours is a bit on the low side for me.

I can only imagine what it would be like on the 93P 14x18. It would bring me back 30+ years ago, when I was playing the Graphite Pro with this pattern, and going through nylons or synthetic guts every 4-5 hours.

This is a cross-post from a Tour 100P thread:

I may try the 2015 TT100P. I've been playing with the Phantom Pro 100P for close to a year, and I love the comfort, the old-school feel, etc. However, I'm coming to terms with the fact that I'm an average player (middling 3.5) who is still trying to nail down technique, footwork, consistency, etc. The PP100P seems to shine for people with really full strokes and great timing but, for me, I continue to struggle with things like the serve and defensive stabs at the ball when I'm pulled out wide.

The consensus seems to be that the TT100P retains comfort but offers more free power, forgiveness, and a bit more of a modern feel than the PP100P. For those who have played both, would you agree with that?

i would agree with that and i am pretty much in the identical camp. I have both PP100P and TT100P(2015). I see no need for TT 100P (2019) as my elbow is somewhat sensitive and 2019 seems just a stiffer version of 2015. I just ordered TT100 (310) and should arrive in few days. I will be focusing in 2 things in comparison: (i) comfort (I know TT100P(2015) will be more comfortable but want to see if the difference is small or not , (ii) open pattern in (310) vs tt 100p (2015) closed pattern (ie compromise on launch angle/control vs gain in power etc)...

AA7, please let me know what you think of the new TT100 as compared to the 2015 TT100P. I know the TT100 (310) just got a glowing video review from the TW playtesters, but I'm wondering if they made it a bit too stiff...

Playing this weekend (if the racquet arrives on time) and will report back..
Btw... not to hijack the thread but TT 100P (2015) is one fantastic racquet for me and my level... perfect middle ground between tweener and players...so this tt100(310) has a high bar for my comp purposes.

I had tennis elbow surgery in 2017 to fix a tear. I use the Phantom Pro 100, TT100P and Beast 98. I do have some residual soreness everyday, but I have not had any issues of discomfort while playing with any of these racquets. In other words my elbow is not any more sore after playing tennis than on a day I do not play tennis. I have mine strung with Ashaway Monogut ZX Pro 17 and Head Velocity MLT 17.

Have you tried lowering tension on the phantom to open up sweetspot? On the run and defense I find my shots find the net with the tour. I think it's a dense pattern thing. The highest I've had my phantom strung was 50lbs in syn gut and my god it played so dead so if youre also around that range in string tension then consider a drop.

Mind you I'm also around the 3.5 level. 4.0 when I'm 'on'. I struggled with timing too and adding some weight under the buttcap has made it easier to swing and hit my timing.

I'm also about 3,5-4.0. Tell me something about playing with Phantom on this level. Is it hard to generate power?

It can be, especially in a long, drawn-out match. You need to take a full swing to generate the power. Serving, in particular, suffers when you're feeling some fatigue...there's just no extra pop when you're trying to fight through the tiredness.
