I wouldn't be so sure of that. I never thought of him as a big server but he gets some nasty spin. I feel like this matchup should be in Gojo's favor just due to Gojo's height and how flat he hits it. It seems like the ball is right in his strike zone. He's spraying everything right now!
@Nostradamus have you been watching this whole time? How have the calls been? Normally Gojo has some really bad hooks.

Gojo loses first set 6-0. Not impressed at all by these 3-second points. At the start of the match JJ was constructing points but now he just needs to make more than two balls in play and he's won the point.

I don't wanna feed you fire, but just imagine if he was playing Geller. He can't deal with JJ's pace, just think about what would happen with Gellers. I don't understand how someone who plays and does well at challengers can be playing like this. He had a normal backhand a minute ago, perfectly normal, just a neutral ball, it was the ball after his serve, and he just hit it into the ground. No pace, I think it hit the ground before it hit the net. I can't tell if he's just not trying or is hurt or something. There is no pattern, he looks like he's pushing one second and then he'll go for winners out of nowhere.

I think the point is that Geller hits harder than Wolf. Not smarter, just harder, and Gojo is crumbling under wolfs pace which isn't really his bread and butter. It's hard to compare college players. Especially when players like Gojo can make the NCAA finals, and then some weeks just doesn't show up.

Ohio State going to be the new #1 in the next team rankings and JJ Wolf will be the new #1 in the singles rankings
This JJ Wolf dude - kind of hard to figure out why he wins. I mean he is obviously very, very good, but he is not tall, he serves hard but not lights out, he hits hard but others can do that too. He is fast, that's for sure. His return of serves is the best I've seen entire weekend. It will be interesting to see how he does on the pro level.

Great tournament for OSU. I like their team and coach - I really enjoyed watching them at Wake last year in the NCAAs. They call it fair and have likable players (unlike some ACC teams...).
Solid tournament for Wake. I have no doubt Petros would have won that third set, because that's what he does. So it came down to doubles and Melios - Wake can flip one or both of those in the future. I was really impressed with Banthia's third set comeback.

Out of all players there I would say Cressy dude from UCLA has the best chance as a pro. I mean literally everyone hits hard - so you can't win by that alone. Most of the guys can serve lights out too. But Cressy has this net game, he is sooo long that he covers entire net, and very, very hard to lob. So his game has an angle that others do not have.

He's been playing really well for 6 months or so. Sometimes players just get into grooves, and he appears to be in one. Petros beat him 6-1, 6-3 in NCAAs last year and made it look easy.

I personally thought his talent was apparent from the first time I saw him play in person at the 2017 NCAAs in Athens. His racket head speed was on another level than most other college players and his groubdstroke timing was exceptional. Back then his game was a little bit wild but now he has it under control.
I agree. I like Petros' game. He actually does not hit as hard as others, but he gets on offense by locating shots that make guys run side to side until they can't reach the ball. He changes pace by hitting occasional slice. Which is what you need. like 75% of players there just hit as hard as they can from both sides - but at that level the opponent can just return it equally fast.
yes, clearly he is an exceptional player. Still I'm not convinced. You will have hard time winning on teh next level by hitting hard. Maybe I'm blinded by his relative 'shortness'. I do agree though that he rarely misses, and because of his speed he is always in position to hit the ball.
now ranking wise - was it better to win first round and lose the next two matches (USC, UCLA) or lose the first and win the next two (Stanford)?

That's when I first noticed Wolf too. I had gone to Athens to watch Norrie, Torp, Thai, etc play in the team event but I enjoyed the Rybakov/Wolf match at 2 more than Norrie/Torp. Wolf was still HS age as he had started college early; he made more UEs with aggressive play then but the talent was apparent. Now with 2 years under his belt, he is top 300 ATP and probably best collegiate player (but would be fun to watch him play Petros and Cressy)

When I started watching JJ when he played in high school, I did not see him getting that good, I said he does not have any weapons that will get him to the top of the next level. I still dont see the weapon, but maybe he is weaponizing consistency and movement like Djokovic has (at a different level obviously).

Petros won't make it in the pros. he has no weapons. it is kind of simplifying things but it is harsh truth. Very good all around player just can't cut it in the pro. You need 2 weapons to make it in the pros, not just one.

Do you think Stanford will make the NCAA tournament this year? I think they'll be a solid top 20 team all year and will have a chance at making the round of 16.
Much better to lose first round and win the next two. That is a big flaw of the current ranking system.
i watched wolf play in the ncaa's last year and he was so inconsistent. great backhand but he literally could not put 3 forehands in a row in the court without making an error. i didn't get a chance to watch the stream of his matches in chicago last week, but something must have clicked for him.
