Weiss Cannon Ultra Cable - need some feedback

Yes, I would also add MSV Focus Hex Soft in that list of soft playing polys. Have you tried Technifibre Black Code? That is also very soft playing in my opinion.
Yes, I have played Black Code and you are right, that is also a very soft feeling string.

Agree on ultra cable. Crisp and firm were my impressions. Not a bad string at all. The spin was legit. I just prefer the feel of the round, softer poly.

Grapplesnake Cube 1.18 and/or the hybrid Cube Extra Sharp/Liquid?
I got Cube 1.18, a new string called Irukandji (supposed to be very slippery) and Duo-poly hybrid of CES+ Liquid Neon (1.23 & 1.25)

These are the only ones they will be offering in US market for now, I was told.

The Neon yellow version is stiffer than the "classic" black/grey Cube/Liquid hybrid that I have ordered. I have also ordered Cube 1.18.

Really looking forward!!!

Nice! Lets exchange notes when we are done hitting! (y) - I usually go all out whenever trying stuff with a brand but this is all they had lol

My brother in law is actually a big Kirschbaum fan. He used to play college tennis back in the 70s and ever since Guga won French Open, has been a polyester string fanatic. Coming back to topic, the thing about Kirschbaum is that they are factory pre-stretched. I am not a fan of how they feel as well, in all honesty. Same for my son.
...
What racquet are you using? I'm curious because ultracable does not exactly play very soft. I had a few people try my son's racquet setup since I'm sort of a helicopter parent as he calls it lol. Anyway, as matter of fact the consensus among our team was that it plays crisp and on firmer side. I wouldn't recommend this to beginner level players or those that don't have proper long strokes to really maximize this strings potential. Ours was strung low too, in high forties.

Makes sense you probably wouldn't care too much for the Kirschbaum strings. I think there are two kinds of poly people. The ones that liked muted polys and the ones that like the crisper ALU type polys. Of course there are ranges, but I think people tend to gravitate one way or the other.

My current frame, which I am enjoying immensely, is the Rossignol F230. It's probably got an RA of about 40-45. My previous frame which I still like a lot is the Pure Control 95, which I think is an RA of about 56 or so. The Rossignol is strung at 52/36 on a Stringway constant pull drop weight. I strung my Pure Controls around 48lbs even before. I haven't tried the higher differential on those yet, but 48lbs was quite comfortable with the kirschbaum strings. Stiffness ratings on TWU were very similar with the UC being slightly softer IIRC.

When I think soft, I think Polyfibre TCS, Tourna BHB7, Isospeed Cream or even Cyclone Tour.

I haven't tried Cream or Cyclone Tour, but you're right about TCS. It was very soft and got softer on every hit it felt like. I think I wanted to like it a lot when I hit the first ball, but after 30 minutes on the ball machine I knew I could never play with it. I did keep it in my racquet for one more session thinking it might settle somewhere and I could always adjust the tension higher, but it never settled. Just kept dropping.

Just keep in mind that even though the Ultra Cable is a 1.23 according to the package the string's area is roughly equivalent to a 15L round string.
I know I played a lot with UC. And I love it MASSIVELY.
I want to try it with a thin, round and extremely slick cross.
It smells good the EVIL SPIN!!!!!!! :happydevil:

I think it's a good idea. It might take a couple of tries to dial in tensions. The spin should be really good though. Durability might suffer a bit, but hopefully it will be worth it. :)

Always good to experiment.
Tension? 20/18kg. ;)

The tension maintenance on TCS is indeed terrible. It does get resolved a bit if you string low tensions (high 30 lbs or low 40 lbs) but even then it is noticeable. String it in the 50s and you will not be able to play for more than one or two session, the drop is so drastic. But hey, plays super soft from start till end :)

Red Code Wax is a great cross string in my opinion. I playtested it for TW here. Nice slippery string, great snapback with tad above average playability you would get from a poly. Has a smelly waxy coating and string feels thicker than it's gauge. All the makings for a good cross.

I wish I shared your enthusiasm about Ultracable though, not my cup of tea and a hard pass from me for reasons I already mentioned earlier. But if it works for you, great! I do however recommend RCW as a good cross string very often to those experimenting with hybrids.

Best of luck with all that spin ;)

I have finally replaced the Cube 1.18 with the Neon Dust hybrid!! I want to compare the two hybrids side by side!!
Let me know your feelings with the Cube 1.18, compared with the Neon hybrid!! :D

I reluctantly used a half set of UC as I'd run out of my normal strings. I stand by previous comments on this. This string is all-round one of the crappest polys on the market. If plays great for such a short amount of time as to be ludicrous - barely a couple of hours before falling off a cliff in tension and feel.

As someone who gets lots of string-jobs done a year if you like the starting characteristics of this string just change to the Blue Rock 'n Power. It's got everything spin-wise that UC has but does everything else better - tension maintenance, feel, playing-life performance curve (feel and power).

Plus, it's blue so you look better too. :p

Was it strung constant pull or lock-out, and what tension? I'm really curious what the difference might be between our stringings. I played 2 sets of singles on the frame I've been using for several weeks now, and it's still playing very well. I have noticed the surface of the string is a little rougher than when new, so it's not quite as slippery, but no notching to speak of and no issues with tension that I can tell from the previous sessions.

I might pick up a pack of the Blue Rock n Power when I get towards the end of my reel just to compare the two, but the way things are going it may be over a year before I exhaust this reel. :)

Oh man. I hate to sound like this but I did not like it that much. It feels way too firm and crisp for my taste and feedback on harder hit balls was very harsh. Strung at 48 lbs. Amazing spin though. The ball bite is crazy. Power is on the lower end of spectrum, but it is not dead like some of the very low powered ones out in the market. Also, feels thicker than it's gauge when in hand. But this is the kind of string that would take your arm off in a stiffer racquet if strung any tighter. I can definitely see this for modern game with players using lots of topspin in their groundstrokes who are young, and don't have sensitive arms. I'm in my mid thirties, decently fit and an aggressive baseliner, and I could feel it after the training session. It was an intense session though and 90% was exchanging baseline rallies with college players. Serves were great. Lots of work on the ball on kick and slice serves.

I have another session scheduled tomorrow so will let you know if the string has settled in a bit and if tension drop changes feedback. I purchased two sets of Cube and my other set is in my Pure Storm Tour which I will pick up today from the stringer. This one I played was in my TC97 which is foam filled and has an old school sort of hoop flex. Two very different playing racquets. Will see how the variation plays out using the same string as well.

Haqq, what string and tension was in the racquet before the Cube? And how does the launch angle compare to your previous string?
Before Cube I was using Tier One Black Knight in the racquet and it was strung at same 48 lbs. Both strung on Gamma ELS 5800 constant pull machines.

BK is a shaped (hexagonal) string and has a very good blend of power and control. Very predictable and consistent. Pockets the ball well and playability and longevity is excellent, so Cube had some serious competition and big shoes to fill.

For the launch angle, the Cube had a higher launch angle, but not by much. I had no issues in adapting. The spin was excellent so ball was dipping in nice and bouncing high.

I've used UC about 6 or 8 times. Always strung on a constant pull and I've tried both no-pre and pre-stretched. Pre-stretched made it last a little longer but not a lot. I use a PS85 and strung at about 45lbs which is similar to stringing at about 53lbs on a 95 sq in frame or thereabouts.

A key issue with the characteristics of this sort of string is it really only shows it's best side with decent swing speeds. But if you have decent swing speed you'll also loosen the strings quicker too and these loosen particularly quickly. If you want generally better life-span then try Blue Rock. If you want much better life span but can handle slightly less spin then Black 5 Edge is a good option to try.

That's all good!!!!!!
Try the Neon Dust hybrid, man!!!
You will have the same crazy spin and ball bite but with much more comfort!!!!
And don't hesitate to string even lower!!! With one kg more for the Liquid cross. 20/21kg is a good start.
It's a dream to play with in my Phantom Pro 100!!!!!!

Thanks. Sounds like it might be a string I need to try. I'm currently looking for something with a similar stiffness and response to Tour Bite but with just a bit higher launch angle. I just strung up Revolve Spin and it's kind of a funny string. Very elastic on the stringer and with a fair amount of tension loss on the pull, so I double-pulled with a lockout stringer and it created a pretty firm stringbed that seems to have held it's tension so far (about two hours in). However, on the court, it's pretty low powered - a hair less than Tour Bite. It's a very internally damped string - when bouncing a ball on the stringbed, the ping is muted almost immediately, and this makes it fairly arm friendly when mis-hitting. However, it doesn't have any higher launch angle than Tour Bite, but has a stronger sensitivity to incoming spin. Nothing exception, so I'm still on the lookout for a string that gives me that little bit of difference I'm expecting, and hoping that Cube with its firm response and higher launch angle might fit the bill.

Thanks for the update. I still can't explain the difference in our experiences. The frames we are using are similar size, tension is similar but I do have a difference between the mains and cross tension. The only significant difference I can see would be my frame is probably a lot more flexible. Maybe that's enough to take some stress off the string so it doesn't drop so fast.

I guess it could also be that I am just used to playing with loose muted poly strings. I played kirschbaum spiky shark before this one and I think it also had a pretty high tension loss right at the start, but played very consistent for me after that. IIRC I played through two reels of that one before trying the UC based on it's higher spin potential and slightly lower stiffness rating.

For those who love UC, you must try the NEON DUST hybrid from GRAPPLESNAKE!!!
It's a modern and much better version of UC!!!!!
PURE BOMB!!!!!!!!!

I just ordered some Grapplesnake sets but once I am done testing those, will order 4S and will give impressions (y)

Not sure if you've tried both the 4S AND the Neon Dust hybrid from Grapplesnake yet. But I'm very interested to hear your thoughts about the Neon Dust hybrid since I've made the switch over from 4S to Neon Dust

I agree it plays great when new but doesn’t last very long. But I use it as a cross with alu power main and it works well as a cross.
