Why a Fed fan is supporting Thiem tomorrow

I’m a Fed fan (despite any confusion of my profile name), but I will be rooting for Thiem tomorrow.

This will mark just the fourth time I have rooted against Roger. The others were:
2017 Montreal final vs Zverev
2017 USO vs Delpo
2018 Rotterdam vs Dimitrov
I think this means a heck of a lot more to Thiem. Another IW victory is only relevant to Fed for points. This could be a huge breakthrough for Thiem if he pulls it out somehow.

I was having the same thought but I still am going to support Fed. He’s 37 and just made his 3rd straight final at what is arguably the most prestigious Masters right now. Him coming out with a victory here will give him a lot of momentum going into the spring/summer which will be huge for his chances of winning one more Slam as well more tournaments to break Connors’ 109.

Thiem can wait.

NO, not anymore meaningful to Thiem than any other 1000 event. ONLY meaningful win for Thiem at this point is if he wins a Major. Major is what he needs to make the breakthrough. Everything else is MeaningLess

No, he cant,
Thiem winning on hard courts is not a guarantee.
Federer has 69! titles on this surface.

One of the only time when I feel it wouldn't be so bad if the other guy won was WB2009. Roddick was the better player overall that day, and deserves a WB win after multiple finals losses. But the Fedr fan in me don't want to give that win up after the fact.

Thiem's best chance was Madrid finals last year. After taking out Nadal, he then proceeded to get straight setted by Z.
This time it's on HC, but not just any HC, but IW HC, so tomo, Fedr in 2 plox.

I'm with you. I have a much longer list of guys I've rooted for over Federer, at various times, but usually it's when it means just that much more to the other guy. I rooted for Roddick, Del Potro and some other guys, for various reasons. This is different, in a sense, but at some point I want to feel invested in another generation of tennis players, not just 10 or so guys over 30. I want to find the guy I'm going to be rooting for in 2023 as hard as I've rooted for my favorites in the past. And it has to start by rooting for some young guys to announce themselves with wins over the big guns.

If Thiem is good, let him show it and win. The 2 wins he got against Fed - i don't even count them.. Fed was testing waters at Stuttgart and Rome for the Wimbledon . As far as I am concerned the real h2h is 2-0 to Fed.

@Red Rick - If Fed goes on to win, what about your proclamation end of last year that Fed will get ousted from top 10 in 2019 ? He sure seems on the ascend to top 2.

Rooting against Roger, what does that feel like?

It has to start with some young guys displaying a level of tennis that is champion level. I don't see why anyone would be happy to see Fed have a bad day and Thiem win, which is what would be required to happen. It isn't going to mean anything going forward.

I'm cheering for Fed. Thiem doesn't deserve it if he can't beat a 37 (almost 38) year old. GOAT or not. Beating Raonic doesn't mean you deserve a Masters title.

Wow everyone constantly brings up Feds age, as if everyone should beat him.
So any 20 year old should be able to beat Fed just because hes 37?
Great logic. maybe I would beat him too, since im younger than him :rolleyes::rolleyes:

A younger generation shouldn't have to wait for the old guard to literally break down to take over. They should display a level of tennis that is simply higher than their ageing predecessors. That isn't happening and that's why I don't want to see the Next Gen take over.

Its not their fault that the GOAT is still playing at 37. Just because hes older than them, doesn't mean they have a right to beat him.

That's an unfair take. You are *assuming* that Thiem can't play well enough, then analyzing it only in terms of what it would mean if he doesn't play well enough, but *still* wins. The whole point is that it would be great to see him earn the win.

For now, Fed is 37 and needs this victory to confirm that he can still win big titles so that he could gain confidence to win at least 1 more slam.

Uhh....Yeah? Any good 20 year old should beat a 37 year old.

Hopefully, it won't happen tomorrow though 8-B:giggle:

Hewitt and Safin were beating a 29-30 year old Sampras in slam finals at just 20 years old.

But I'm with you, I hope Fed wins tomorrow. :giggle:

I'm coming back on that. Everyone but Fedalovic is terrible, so very hard to drop out the top 10.

But Djokovic and Nadal will easily finish above Fed.

Ok. Let us retire the topic of Fed being ousted from top 10 till such time he actually retires.

Doesn't owning the outright Indian Wells record mean much to many Federistas here? Sitting atop one of the most prestigious M1000 events?

So 1 more Indian Wells crown is important as it breaks the tie with Djoko.

A win here this year can erase those championship point nightmares from last year

Fed needs a big tournament win to get his mojo back. It appears a minor hand injury really shook his confidence at the end of 2018. Got blocked at Auz Open by Tsitsipas, but otherwise appears to be getting nicely on track. He and his fans want him on clay again and a bad loss at IW in what might be a physical match might have Federe thinking twice about clay (personally I think he should play Madrid and skip RG to optimize his Wimby chances while still picking up some points on clay and getting some match play as opposed to overplaying on grass which hurt him last year with his run early at Stuttgart.)

Fed almost getting old enough and down enough that I might have to root for him as under dog more and more, but he's not there yet so firmly behind Thiem.

He was ousted from the top 10 already

He was done

Dusted

Kaputt as they say in massive war crime and genocide committing countries

He could be ranked 170 and still have a chance at any tournament

Not sure I'll live that long.

Anyway, I assumed the rest of the field would step up in 2019 based on the 2nd half of 2018, but it has dug an even deeper grave.

If Thiem wanted a masters he should have beaten Nadal or Zverev in his previous finals. Tired of these mugs having to get their rare glory against Roger all the time, while always predictably failing against the other big guys.

Nadalovic still getting more than their share, today should be Roger's time for some more silverware.

Federer is going to abuse Thiem's court positioning here.
