Played in a small tournament this weekend...

Rain pushed the sled back and that forced us to play shortened sets...start at 2-all, no add, and match tiebreak if you split sets...2 all an no ad goes awfully fast.

I played well...had one poor service game per set...broke my opponent back but still lost.

I got nervous and was trying to hit everything way too hard..the short set also caused faster changeover times...which didn’t help.

Oh well, As the saying goes..I either win or I learn...and I learned quite a bit

Looking at Chael’s shots, I’d love to play and hit with him. Not many as solid rally ball hitters in my circles. And that is exactly, what I’d need right now.(*

Honestly, I love just hitting and getting in a groove with someone. I have a lot of stress these days and finding people who have a good cadence and rythm just hitting is a wonderful "thoughtless" and relaxing activity. It is interesting though that it is hard to find people who just wanna hit. I have people who will walk by and I will be hitting on a ball machine or practicing with someone and they mentioned wanting to hit togetther, but it always turns into a match. That's fine and all, but I really only need a match or two a week and would love the rest of the days to be practice sessions with consistent folks who want to work on various things. I know 10 shots eac sounds low, but I have a few guys I hit with that in an hour of hitting practice, there is MAYBE a half dozen rallies over 5 shots, before they shank or go for a winner. I work that into a drill for myself, but it gets VERY tiring.

I've been looking for more of those practice folks, and meeting the guy Cory this weekend was perfect. His first comment after we warmed up was, "I need to get your number so we can hit". I was waiting for the mention of matches, but continued with, "I just need someone to get a workout in with, with decent pace but also a bit of movement". I was, like, GOLD! So got his number and expect we'll get a long and work in a hit at least once a week. Same with Tilman that I was playing in the match above, though he likes matches too so we split time with hitting and match play.

People who want to drill and practice are hard to find, but worth looking for.

As I always say...if anyone is in AZ, just hit me up. :)

Cregslist round-robins went really good. Yet in the warm up with new balls neither of us could find any kind of tempo or rythm to our shots, I for some odd reason found something, when the match started.

Not many long rallies, but a few 5 to 10 shots, where we both hit pretty hard and moved each other from wing to another.

What stunned me the most, was that I could hit his slower rally balls with authority and put them away from almost anywhere on the court. My oppenent is known for his slow rally balls in our practice groups and he often upsets some of the guys by hitting so consistently.

However he is not that fit and doesn’t move all that well and I got him moving today. His serve was out of pace in the beginning, so I got a lot of ROS winners steep CC or inside-in on the ad-court against his short slices. The exact shot I was practicing with my mrs the other day, while she worked on her serve. Winning six games from the start for me is really exceptional.

I am lucky in this regard - I have two friends who just want to hit which is perfect for me coming off endless injuries. Just a nice workout hitting lots of balls. Everyone else I know will say they want to 'just hit' but after 15 minutes they are clearly bored and want to play sets. Glad it sounds like you found someone to just hit with.

You were inspired by @ChaelAZ 's video.

Yeah that too, but, I think it was ”Braden here” in a Ytube clip suggesting it, were you sure to pull it off with that one shot stepping into the doubles corridor. Otherwise that decision would open the whole forehand side of the court for an opposite result.

A poor slice at the middle of the service box makes it a really easy shot. That’s why I don’t serve intentionally a slice in the middle on ad-court, but try to slice it wide and let the ball turn into a body serve on opps bh. Heavy slice will bounce out wide off the strings, if not really hit properly.

What a hit and a tennis day yesterday!

One of my club coaches had called me, if had time to hit with him on a short notice between his lessons.

He’s working on a test pattern with the Zenniz folks developing the audio-based line calling, analyzing device and software statistics on players level of play.

There is a 3/5-minute hit pattern, where your shots are analyzed by accuracy, pace and what is the per centage hitting them in.

This is how it goes. You rally against each other and try to hit groundies into a box at the center hash, one meter off the baseline and 0.5 x 1 meters in size.

We did it three times, but there was some malfunction, so I only got data out of two of the sets. Anyway, I found out, that my percentages got up, when the average ball speed was upto 94 km/h. At 82 my strokes in-% was only 78, while at 94 it got up to 84. Shots average on a rally was 9.1. For reference his numbers were 90, 97 on the second set.

I was kind of nervous in the beginning, but that makes perfect sense. I’ve felt allways, that I cannot win points, if I’m to play ”safe” against lower pace guys. Really doesn’t feel natural to hit any slower, than what was clocked yesterday to average at 94. Breaks the rythm and more over, makes my footwork sloppy, if I hit ”so slow”, cause I tend rather slow down and hold the release, instead of swinging shorter or slower. Contact point drifts too much back, when trying to hit slower balls.

They now have a small take on players viewed and he told me, there is a clear pattern already showing on the numbers. And it seems to be quite linear. a strong 4.5 will have higher pace and percentage than a mid 4.5 or a weak 4.5. While the 5.0s can hit probably 100 km/h at 90 to 100% in. They are really egar to develop the test patterns and find out more on the records, when getting a wider population into the system.

After the hit in the afternoon, I got into my group practice in the evening. 2.5 hrs of quality practice a day is allways something to feel happy about.

Oh MY!

On my thursday group is a niples-to-net-fella... his ping-pong shots are wicked, but after sertain level his style is done.

Others in the group are tennis blokes, one promising junior and one overweight bloke, who hits slow balls and like to moonball, when ever he can. But he too hts tennis shots.

This f•&@ing slice machine is a total joke.

Has a kind of a flat serve, but all other strokes are BS. Goodto playhim in the practice, but within the drills and warmup.... yeah, no rythm and all kind of junk shots. His kind you counter in the low ranked games n a league.

And you never know, if you’re to win or lose.

Won three games last week against JC, including a break of his serve. Stopped at 3-4 on serve. A year ago I was in so much pain I almost quit. Call it a moral victory! Soon I will be ready to challenge nationally ranked 12 year old girls! [emoji56]

Well I entered the VanLawn Masters tournament again. 50+ mens doubles, senior ITF level 2 tourney. I won the consolation finals last year but I'm not sure I've improved enough this year to expect a better result. My partner's been playing better tennis of late so maybe he can carry me this year.
Tourney starts in April so about a month to prepare without getting injured (always a distinct possibility).

Sadly I'd have been eligible for 55+ this year but my partner is too young

Exactly!!!! I had a guy that I hit with every Saturday morning at 10am and Sunday afternoon at 4 pm for 6 years. Would would just hit. Work on our game, about one and a half hours each day. Glorious.. Then he moved.

Found another guy that was of the same mindset. 2 years with him. Then he moved. Now I have 3 guys and we rotate. Usually hit for 45 minutes then play a set.

I'm the opposite. I want there to be a score somewhere. Having something count focuses me. If I just "hit" the balls pretty soon start spraying everywhere and I get no rhythm. If we make a game of it, then I'll concentrate and enjoy it more. Doesn't have to be a match. Could just be a "who can hit the ball beyond the service line and before the baseline the longest" game. Or can we rally up to 50 shots? Anything that keeps track and makes me focus my attention.

Must be my ADD nature.

No it is not. People have basically two different patterns in mental preference. They are either task or result oriented.

I can see Cheal being task oriented, and you result oriented. And would guess, that Chael needs to keep his head at the task in match play concentrating on things like keep the feet moving hit thru and trace the ball. While you see the ball and figure out ways to score points without concentrating on the tasks required to get it done.

I use both. depends on what i’m trying to accomplish. ill often switch to result oriented if I or my partner is just spraying (waste of time picking up balls al the time)

I hear, what you are saying, but I think you are not talking about the same thing here.

Typically a task oriented person is way better in practice, while the result oriented gets the best out of his skills in a competitive situation.

Thinking patterns differ in comp and neither is better than the other, but you have to know, which way you are to be able to work your brain and thoughts the right way in match play.

Not sure that's it really. I tend to normally be a process oriented guy but I'm a big "game based learning" guy. Put the skills in a drill or game situation and I progress more rapidly. Tell me to just hit the ball repetitively with one swing thought to learn and I rapidly get bored.

i don't need to win any of these games but I need to try. Friendly competition is why I play tennis in the first place. Adding that to practice sessions fires me up to keep practicing.

I was always like this in school. If you gave me problems to solve, I learned far quicker than if you just taught me through didactic explanations. It's the way i also approach my job as a physician. Every patient is a unique problem to solve. I learned more lessons from patients than I ever learned from textbooks.

...

That sounds quite like me, exept, I tend to choke, when playing involves counting points. Have I had my mind on the tasks in a tourney to get it done, I’ve excelled. The feel is quite something. Lot of people say, don’t look at the scoreboard, but when you get into the zone, it doesn’t matter seeing the score. You see yourself on the top of the list, leading, but it doesn’t get registred. Just crazy.

However, a block practice only gets anybody so far. In tennis there are usually variables dialed in even with the block kind of practice, but any skill is learned faster and to higher level by variable training instead of grinding the same thing over and over.

Ofcourse in the beginning there is some need to grind and even later, if you wish to change a bad habit, but more than just doing the same over and over, versatility will have more long lasting results. After a block practice, You get more of them instant results, but they faint fast as well. Varying situations activate the brain in different ways and new neural connections are developed. The tighter and wider the neural network in the brain, the more possibilites to solve the task you posess.

In general tennis players are better off than say marathonists, or thriathlonists due to the endurance they need to build by running, swimming and cycling endlessly.

Ha! Same here, the Mrs is eligble for the 60+ already, but I’m still under 55, so she pulled out from mixed doubles nationals and said, the game is too harsh on her at my age group. Dang.

Ouee, phiuuh. Out of breath.

Out of steam totally. The morning hit was with a friend, who does not spin a lot, but hits them laser forehands at 133 k cc. And he is really unpredictable, if he goes either dtl or cc. The dtl is probably 125~ish, but still a hard shot to return on the run. The weird thing is, that he’s able to kill it even at angle high, with relatively low spinrate.

Not smart to give any leeway for him, if played for points. Anyway, this time it was me, who suggested we’d take a hand feed tie-breaker after pounding groundies for 50 minutes back and forth.

Looked to be quite oneway match, as i was losing in the beginning, till 2-6. Stayed with the shots and finally, catched him at 7A. Then it was one to me, one to him, and I felt, that I’ll lose the game, when it was 8-9. He then said, three points till the end, you or me. Did not realize, what he said - anounced the score, but I won the remaining three.

Then had a rush to my gym and pilates studio to an hour pilates workout an stretched for some 40 minute after te lesson.

As I got back, I saw one of my coaches had an empty spot at his night session and I reluctantly answered: - Well OK, I can come and behave badly. He knows me and my present liking of tennnis. I told him, that I’ll only take the lens, I have already payed for till next fall. Still he keeps calling me.

And it was even worse than the morning when I didn’t have my timing right in the beginning of the lesson. Since my strokes are really heavy when I’ve got the timing right, I ended up hitting them the hardest I could considering the guys in that group. The other was having the wheels I’ve never seen in my life and the other one seems to be at least one level above me maybe even two or more.

Oh that said I think it was awesome to win half of the points in a match tiebreak. Well hand feed but still. Yet them where so much better than me, I was kimd if p#ssed, cause I did not find ny ryhm into my strokes and was hitting too late mostly on backhand. Even the relatively reliable slice had gone south.

Sports for today sums up to 4000 cal and I can have a pizza! Which is nice.

Well I had a great 6 days in the desert. Watched a ton of tennis, played a lot of tennis. Got to hit with my cousin (former ranked atp satellite player who now works with some good juniors in LA) which was so much fun. It is amazing how much better you (I) hit when facing a good player. No time for wasted motion, no time for stupid shot selection, just focus, hit it out in front and get into a great rhythm. Of course when he hit it away from me I had no chance lol! Felt great to have him say I hit a good ball and he got a good work out. Wish I could hit against that type of player on a regular basis, I would improve so much (that's why I'm jealous of @BounceHitBounceHit and the guys he gets to hit with!).

And the place we hit, holy crap. Hard to find a court during the IW tourney so my cousin says, "I think I can get us a private court". I'm thinking a court at the condo he's staying at. Nope. Turns out he knows a REALLY rich dude in LA who also has 'houses' in Rancho Mirage, Malibu, the Hamptons etc etc. More like mansions.

His court looked like the center court of a tennis club, complete with veranda, built in bar etc. The 'house' took up most of the block. Supposedly the rat pack used to party there back in the day. He probably pays more in property taxes on this (almost always) empty place than I make per year. :(

I think I mentioned, since I am still rocking an official 3.5 rating from years back, I had my old captain call and ask if I would step in for singles with their guy on injury leave. I reluctantly agreed, and I should have just skipped it. Played two single matches and have done well. Just so much low-pace/no-pace balls. And then they stuck me in a double match last night and I am a) Not in dubs form having not played any dubs except a few pick up matches in the last 2 years, and b) Just hate how league dubs works anyway unless you have an equal pairing.

So last night I was paired with a guy I hadn't played dubs with since about 6 years ago we figured. He is solid on ground strokes but has a 45 mph first serve and MAYBE 30 mph second. And then, the two guys we played knew me from years ago, and after explaining to them I wasn't playing the 4.0 and other leagues anymore, they immediately made their game plan to just completely avoid hitting anything to me. Yup...Aside from service returns, I literally touched like 12 balls in two sets and had 3 balls hit to me at the net. They lobbed over me 100% of the time when I was up on my partner's serve, then pinned my partner in the back corners with high shots that I couldn't even poach on. So they did exactly what they should have to win the match perfectly, and all credit to them for executing that plan. But what a boring night of tennis. The way this is going I will be an official 3.0 in no time. :p

Doubles. It's a bad sign when you have to play two back due to lobbing and not great ros.

There is a fix for that in singles. I was playing a guy in a singles tournament with a big serve and groundies. For whatever reason, he was playing s&v. I was having one of those unconscious fh topspin lob days. My buddy playing next to me must have noticed, because at some point he started laughing out loud on every ts lob. Guy I was playing got really mad ... and muttered he could stop this crap. He was right ... he stayed back and beat me something like 7-5,7-5. :p

There is one comp senior back here, who was winning about everything some years back. He then got into business and working hard and setting up a family and nearly completely stopped parcticing or playing in between matches.

He never told anybody, he’d stop practicing, but the people, who won got overwhelmed of winning him and found out, that he’d quit practicing.

Do not give an edge to your opponent telling, you’ve on hiatus!

Dang,

Got soaked also today on the court. I had a hit with a friend of mine, a badmington guy, spin wizzard and not too good tennis shot. Nice guy though, and that’s why I go with him eerie now and then in beetween the more quality training.

It wasn’t that tough an hour, but I must have fever. And it has been building up since last tuesday, if not earlier.

Yesterday all he-ll broke loose and I coughed my lungs out burning in the chest. Hurts on the abbs and sides of my body, yet doing basically nothing, but laying on my back in an easy chair.

Self-diagnozed a bronchitis. Will see a doctor in medicine tomorow or first thing next week, if this woun’t go away. At least five years since last catching a flu or anything.

What a dissapointment. Nadal wo-ed the IW semi-final. No clash, once again.

Considering the past few years, my humble opinion is, that he’ll quit rather sooner than later.

It’s unfortunate because theirs is a great rivalry. But Nadal’s style inevitably leads to injury. I think the H2H would be closer today had they played yesterday, but Nadal did the right thing by preserving his body for clay.

I think we, old hags can relate to what Rafa said accordin to Tennis World article.

It is essential to keep focused and fight thru the injuries and come back strong (free citation).

The top guys have their bodies torn and worn to the extent, they live the same as we vivid and active rec guys 20–30 years later in life. Agassi and Graff just spoke about their troubles and unability to go out and play as they might like.

I am not quite familiar, how it has been in college sports in our school years, but I think injury preventation and additional workout, pilates and alike has only come into the discussion for the last 10–15 years. Stretching has been out there, but that is not actually preventing that much injuries, but the understanding of the core strength impact does.

I’ve been told/read, that Federer was one of the very first tennis athletes, who took on pilates in their early years with the sport and Tiger Woods had the athletic impact in golf in the late 90’s.

The modern working, and family life is a lot of sitting in the office with a computer under everyone’s nose sitting 8-10 hrs with thorax spine bent over the keyboard, neck and back bent alike the C-monkeys of the 90’s.

It is essential to have a regime to keep good posture, yet the sitting and screen time with the different handhelds to prolong the quality of life till elderdom.

My troubles too are occupation related with the spine; neck and back reflecting into the limbs. Excessive G-load wearing a helmet and really uncomfortable ejection seat for a decade in tough conditions have got me a really too movable and broken back, which would cripple me, if I’d gain a lot or didn’t workout regularly with my core strength.

Hard to explain, but you might get an idea, if you took a ready position your back against a wall pushing your butt against it. Then a 200 lbs guy pushed your head down and you’d turn your face sideways and turned your shoulders, while the load is on.

If I just "hit" the balls pretty soon start spraying everywhere and I get no rhythm.

I would think it would be easier to get into a rhythm if you're not keeping score, which means you can keep playing balls that are out and not stop because the point is over.

If keeping score is what keeps you focused, can you do it internally when hitting with someone and is it just as effective?

I have a secret method taught me by a very successful ATP coach how to combat these duel dilemmas. I’d tell you but it’s possible we will someday meet in a senior tournament!! [emoji56][emoji471][emoji56]
