The Ruud Awakening!

So far, Ruud is holding serve well, facing no break points, but he's similarly struggling to make any dents in the Italian's service games (though had two BPs). A tough task for him, but if he keeps holding, he'll get chances.

Takes some of the sting away from the Wawrinka baking session for fellow RNTA devotee Christian Garin, 1,4&0.
C.Garin trained at the RNA for a year (2016-2017). Now he trains in Buenos Aires.
TW USA, May 10, 2019: ¤¤ In an interview Christian Garin commented on his experience in the Rafa Nadal Academy. The Chilean player was happy with the experience he lived. "It was a good time, I was there for a year ", said Garin. "They always treated me well and when I left they understood it. I am always grateful for all what they did for me." ¤¤

If you see the short docu I linked previous, it was Rafa himself telling Casper what to do w his FH, to evolve Caspers FH more. Rafa was on court back home straight after getting back from AO, that that practice telling Casper.
Casper having more variety with his FH now, more heavy top spin. Casper FH already top class from before, but now its even better. Casper also been training much much more than before practicing at the academy. Hours more practice every single day, ordered by Toni.
More practice(better return) plus more variety on the FH (more top spin) is what we are seeing the results of today, and thats what we will see tomorrow. Will probably see more top spin tomorrow than previous two matches to try to have a chance against Federer. (hopefully Casper wont get too nervous playing such a huge player)

Any Norwegians going south to see this historical event? (from a Norwegian point of view, this is historical in history of tennis)

I like what Rafa (or was it Toni?) said in the documentary; "always play every ball as best as you can". So much truth in those "simple" words, and is in many ways a sum up of Rafa's tennis! I don't think the world has ever seen someone who cares so much about every shot in a match...
I think Casper has improved so much in this field this season. He is working a lot harder now. Very good attitude.

Casper's forehand has so much action on it now, no doubt Rafa's team does good things for him :)

Vamos Casper!!

Roger Federer was too good for Casper Ruud earlier today in their third-round encounter at the French Open in Paris. The Norwegian held the Swiss player to 3-3 in the first set, but after that he was overwhelmed by a sustained run of typical swashbuckling brilliance from the racket of the world no. 3, who won eight games in a row to lead 6-3, 5-0 before taking the second set two games later. At times during that stage of the match Ruud was meant to look a lesser player than he actually is. But his best shots were countered by even better ones time and time again, and there was simply nothing he could do.

Indeed, a lesser player would have folded after the first two sets. Ruud, however, responded by holding serve at the start of the third set and then breaking to lead 2-0. But he was unable to maintain that early lead, being broken back immediately before Federer tied the score at 2-2. Five games later, at 5-4, 30-30, Ruud was two points away from the set, but he wasn't allowed a set point in that game nor when leading 6-5.

In the ensuing tiebreak Federer led 6-4, two match points, but Ruud saved both of them with some spirited play and had a set point at 7-6, albeit on the Federer serve. The Swiss player won that point and had a third match point at 8-7, which was again saved by Ruud. A double fault from the Norwegian at 8-all gave Federer a fourth match point and that proved fatal for Ruud as Federer completed a 6-3, 6-1, 7-6(8) victory. But how interesting things might have been had Ruud been able to convert that set point!

By poor point at 8-8 in the TB, yes a DF does indeed qualify.

Solid performance against the GOAT by Casper. Well done on the big stage, but he should have snatched the 3rd to give us a set more of tennis ;)

That was just about the only big point in the 3rd set in which Ruud was poor. Even the match point that Fed won Ruud played very well, forcing Federer to hit 5 or 6 good attacking shots to win the point. With a 65% winning strike rate this year Ruud is on the rise.

Yes, unfortunately there’s this thing called «grass» coming. Not a friend of his.

Hope his success on the dirt can be translated to grass/HC. It’s nice to see his earlier tendency to outfox himself in Camp 3 Meters Behind The Baseline has been modified. That will help on the faster surfaces.

It's probably a bit early to be saying that? I'm assuming his grass court results are poor but it would be from a small sample and he's had 11 months since last year's grass court season to think about how to adjust his game. I've been posting here long enough to remember emphatic declarations that Djokovic can't play on grass, which with the benefit of hindsight seems a little harsh.

Very much agree on the small sample part; let me re-phrase; I don’t think his current success on clay and increase in ranking will translate into success on grass this year. He is only 20 as I myself have been telling poasters recently. How good he will be on grass eventually? Let’s check back in 6-8 years.. but he probably needs significant improvements to his slice, net game and return position (already improved a ton this year!) to succeed on the surface.

Well, Casper Ruud seems to be sticking with the clay for the moment. As things currently stand, he is the top seed at next week's Challenger tournament in Prostejov in the Czech Republic. Having received a bye in the first round, he will play either the Frenchman Corentin Denolly or the Brazilian Pedro Sakamato in the second round.

Points to gain I guess but an opportunity to dip his toes in the grass “water” at Surbiton’s Challenger level is lost.

An early start for Casper Ruud in tomorrow (Tuesday) in Prostejov, where he takes on 21-year-old Frenchman Corentin Denolly in second-round action, starting at 10am local time.

I hear they are playing some tennis in Paris at the moment, but the stuff of real prestige is going down in Prostejov.

Casperer got off to a slow start against Denolly, but the number one seed rebounded and comfortably secured the victory in the end. Next up, he'll face the winner of Safranek and Miedler, more likely the former.

An impressive win by Casper Ruud earlier today in the last 16 of the Prostejov Challenger where he beat the home hope Vaclav Safranek 6-1, 6-1. In tomorrow's quarter-finals the Norwegian top seed will face the 27-year-old Italian Federico Gaio, who is the no. 10 seed.

Ruud is into the semis after beating Gaio in three, will play old-timer Andujar.

Lookin' good, might make the #NextGen finals.

If Ruud makes the (challenger) finals no one will tune in to Fed demolishing Thiem at RG this weekend.. would be sad for the organizers but such is his Rudeness’ Ways.

The Casper Ruud vs Pablo Andujar semi-final in Prostejov tomorrow should be an interesting test for the Norwegian. Although Andujar is now 33, he has won four singles titles at ATP level from nine finals (all on clay) and was a finalist at the Grand Prix Hassan II ATP tournament in Morocco earlier this year. Earlier today Ruud struggled in his quarter-final match against world no. 202 Federico Gaio, losing the second set easily before recovering to win 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.
