Thank God the exciting tennis is back! Medvedev wins game in 29 seconds

In as much time as it takes to read this story, Daniil Medvedev won a service game on Wednesday at the MercedesCup in Stuttgart.

The Russian, down 6-7(6), 6-4, 1-5 against Frenchman Lucas Pouille, hit four consecutive aces. The game lasted 29 seconds.

After each ace, Medvedev did not towel off or walk to the back wall to inspect the balls.

Instead, he simply received another ball, turned to Pouille, bounced the ball a couple times and crushed another ace. Less than half of a minute later, he was walking to the chair and raising his racquet as the crowd cheered for one of the fastest service games in recent memory.

Last year at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, Aussie Nick Kyrgios recorded a 37-second service game.

Pouille, however, advanced in Stuttgart 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-2 and will next face German Jan-Lennard Struff, who beat #NextGenATP Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic 6-2, 6-2. Pouille is going for his second Stuttgart title after winning the grass-court crown in 2017.

This shouldn't really count given Pouille completely tanked a couple of those points. He was two breaks up and about to serve for the match. Why bother?

I still prefer grass than clay, my opinion remains the same. The grass has become alot bouncer in the past couple decades anyway.
Plays more like a hard court, due to gradual homogenisation.

I remember back in the 90's, Becker hit 5 aces in a row from 0-40 down against another Medvedev. Those 5 points went by in around a minute I think.

Finally watched it. Those weren't aces. Pwee was too lazy to bother returning when he was up two breaks anyway.

So you woud have been happier if he towelled off after each serve, fiddled with his hair, adjusted his shorts checked his watch, and waited for the shotclock to reach 2 or 3 before serving.

How exciting.

Never underestimate the importance of routine.

Much better than watching players towel off after every point, adjust their clothes, fiddle with their hair, etc.

Rearranging water bottles and asking for towels everytime and adjusting shorts for FAR more than 29 seconds ... that is REAL tennis.
You guys are sharing notes :D

29 seconds? What took him so long??

Didn't it only take 26 seconds for Tomic to lose a match to Nieminen??

Or maybe I meant 26 minutes.
He had to wait for the previous serve to touch the ground before he could unleash his next serve.

Someone send a link to Nadal. 29 seconds is close to his average time to serve one serve.

Gives your boy a chance to catch up on his fishing, no ?
He is my boy too. He is fishing for more slams :happydevil:.

I am glad it's the grass season. The sight of green courts after such a long clay season is beautiful. I like both surfaces.

A 29 second service game without any stuffing around between points isn't a bad thing, if Medvedev hits an ace on every point then he shouldn't need to towel down or walk to the back wall. However I also think neither grass or clay tennis is more interesting to watch. On clay you get longer rallies that require good consistency and thinking about where to hit the ball to get it far enough away from your opponent that they can't get it, although some people can find it a little slow moving. Grass has faster points and rewards volley, touch and slice more which can create lots of interesting points too, but it makes it easier to hit aces which many people consider boring.

This gets rarely addressed around here with the fast court obsessed. I think the grass now is a good balance. If it was the 90s grass it would be unbearable with these tall lithe brutes. Look at the body of Anderson when he has his shirt off. 6'2 is like the height you have to be now. The athletism strength and size now is much different than the days of yore. Isner anderson would still be going on with the 90s grass.

lol. I watched that yesterday. Med was so pissed about the slick crappy grass, and was about to lose in the third being down 5/1, he just banged out 4 aces quick. Poullie wasn't even trying to return, knowing he was going to close on his serve next. But yeah...typical grass matches right now, especially with wet conditions. Good ol' 1,2 and 3 shot rallies if it gets past an ace or service return error.

Sooo exciting...:unsure::cautious:

He'd only tell Medvedev to slow down. ;)

Imagine if Nadal were playing Medvedev and Meddy tried to serve four aces in a row in 29 seconds.

Nadal would simply put his hand up and go through his 35 second routine and frustrate Med.

I'd really like to know what is the fastest service game in which Nadal was returning. I don't think Nadal would ever let anyone finish a game in a minute.

I do think the grass is pretty good as it is now (could be a tad faster imo). But most of the "fast court obsession" is with getting the hard courts to play more like the current grass courts, not about getting the grass courts back to where they were 20 years ago.

90s grass tennis of fast grass & graphite rackets is legit some of the worst tennis ever. Anyone who actually wants to go back to that is either overly nostalgic or never actually watched it.

You ever leave the basement long enough to do anything that has made you sweat? Try playing some sports, there is no shame in wiping off your sweat.

The rest of the tour does not do this - are they playing a different sport?

Does blind fanaticism mean that others can't even question the absurd behaviour of Rafa or the number of times Djokovic bounces the ball between serves?

I'm sorry if your attention span can't handle an all time great wiping sweat off his face. Maybe if they lost to Federer less instead of whooping him, you guys would like them more.
