We should be happy that he did change his racquet eventually. Sampras never did and regretted it afterwards. Federer did and had just enough time to prove that it affected his chances. The winning he did/does with it and that proof are the only things that matter in that regard.

Besides, I don't think that it would have helped him to win all that much more. Don't forget, in 2009 he reached all 4 Majors finals winning two of them and losing closely in 5 the other two. That sort of results would have been improbable in the case of him just changing his racquet. When he changed to his current racquet first (summer of 2013) he couldn't get it work at first (for many reasons), so he had to wait until the beginning of 2014 to try again. He then gradually improved and I reckon somewhere around Wimbledon 2014 it clicked for him. That is between 6 months and one year, depending from what starting point one counts. It almost certainly would have meant worse results in the first half of 2009 and possibly the entire 2009. We know that 2010 and 2013 wouldn't have been great years for him because of his health issues with or without the new racquet, so the only benefit from it outside of what he has experienced would have been in the 2011-2012 period. Considering Novak's ascendance in 2011, I think that RG2011 and maybe Wim2011 were on the cards. Maybe USO 2011 too. I don't see him winning AO 2012, nor RG 2012, he won Wim 2012 anyway, and peaked too early in the summer HC season, so not optimally prepared to take the USO.

Well reasoned. Sometimes fans forget about the 'butterfly effect' of such a change. Fedr was dominating for years with the smaller racquet, so it's hard to let it go bc he would fear that it would take away the 'magic'. If I were him, I would find it hard to let go of the racquet that has brought me so much success, for so long. Could he do better with the current, larger one? Sure, but it's not that simple. The only real scenario where it 'might' improve his overall results is if he had started from juniors with it. But then again, the results could be much worse bc he would turn out to be a differnt player, thus possibly winning less. His slice likely would've been worse during his prime. But the slice he had with the smaller racquet was lethal in variety and putting players in awkward possitions (a weaker slice with the bigger racquet still gives Djokr fits today). No way to know the results for sure.

In the end, it's a fun scenario to think about, but nothing would be guaranteed. Just look at his comeback in 2017. If he didn't keep trying to 'fail better' and went against the grain to come back after knee rehab, the racquet change might've proven fruitless/pointless. Both success/failure scenarios were possible when he swapped to the new racquet in 2014. As a Fedfan, I'm just glad to see it 'finally' paid off by winning AO17.

Was happy to finally watch him on grass in his latest match at Halle (semifinals) as the earlier encounters were a bit off my time zone. Hopefully he will carry that wonderful touch and power with him into Wimbledon :)

Couldn't watch the match today. So he was playing well?

Coric and Goffin similar styles and talent level. Once again, on paper this is Feds. I really hope he pulls it out now that he is this close.

I think he has got it in the bag. Feel a double break in both sets. :p

Oh, and is this another revenge match? Think so.

finish Goffin.

If most fans were rightly sceptical how well can he do at RG, this time I think it is fair to say that a SF at Wimby should be par for the course. Yes, it's grass and yes Roger is ancient, but he looks in decent form, has a better seeding and really should do at least as well as on his worst surface.

The draw will be important as there are some dangerous floaters out there, however Federer will be the favorite against all but Nole. I simply don't rate Nadal on grass anymore, even though it would be preferrable he lands in Nole's half just for the psychological effect.

But this is Roger's best chance for a slam this year, surely. DelPo out (feel so bad for him) and also Murray, Cilic and Raonic in poor form, Anderson still not at his best, Zverev average, Tsonga looking out of shape, Querrey, Berdych and Isner nowhere to be seen. Felix too green, Coric having a poor year, Thiem and Tsitsi not a danger on grass, Shapo in the dark, Kyrgios clowning... The gates are wide open.

It seems that we are destined for another Fed vs Nole final.

That's why I'm worried about another 2015 situation where he steamrolls the rest of the field and I get my hopes up, but runs into a brick wall in the final.

Nadal played a great Wimbly last year, he was a sniff away from the final (title). He will be tough to beat again.

For Fed it's the usual drill; he can live and die by his serve if he's on song. It's his best chance for a slam every year since a decade now. But better keep your expectations low; given the low margins on grass and the increasing chances of an off day, he can also lose easily.

Wait wait, that won't happen. If Fed is going down before the finals, it will be a thrilling 5 setter. And whoever defeats him will not win Wimbledon.

2010, 2011, 2013, 2016, 2018 may serve as a sign of things to come for whoever plans on beating Fed. ;) The curse is strong with Fed.

Yes, a win vs Federer at Wimbly has that air of inevitability of fail, because it took too much from the winner, unless of course the match was not in the finals (as ridiculous as it sounds even more so than is the case with Nadal and RG).

Exactly, beating Fed before the finals serves no purpose. Just let the old man through and help tennis fans witness History in the making. This should be the pep talk of everyone in Fed's half of the draw.

Has always reached Wimbledon final whenever he has won Halle (but for 2013).
Has reached Wimbledon final whenever Rafa has reached AO final.
Weather in London has been cool & breezy with spells of rain.
No real health issues.

Augurs really well for a powerful title tilt to equal Navratilova.

Keep Calm & CHUM JETZE!!!

You missed one.

The last time Fed reached RG SF, he won Wimbledon.

All in all, a great effort and result at Halle. Did everything he needed and wanted to do. Now whether it means anything for Wimbledon title hopes, we will find out soon enough. But I am pumped for Wimbledon. Go Fed.
Fed says in this German language interview that he really rounded into form for the final and it was important he didn't lose his serve. He said he has a lot of energy and is ready for Wimbledon: "I really have played super.... I played my best tennis and it is a great feeling."

I disagree here. Consider that Nadal's serve was scarcely broken at RG and his serve held up very well last year at Wimbledon. His serve now is quite a bit improved from even 2010 grass Rafa. I think it's imperative for Fed not to have to play Nadal in the semis and then Djokovic in the final. I don't believe that he can defeat both back to back. Even in his prime, he scarcely ever did that. Rafa has been getting obscenely cakewalk draws in slams for years and I don't expect anything different next Friday when the draw is announced. I don't care if Nick or Raonic are in Fed's half, I much more fear someone like Tsonga (even this "fat" version of JWT).

Seriously, almost every single one of your comments in Federer's direction or regarding the fanbase carries some negative connotation. If you can't say something good, don't say anything, especially when what you are saying is absolute BS. If that is the thing that comes to your mind when you see those pictures you have serious problems of being here at all. Jeebus.

If that's honestly what you think you either need to follow me way closer or put me completely on ignore already.

You're the only one here (that I know of) that thinks I'm a troll/fake fan and constantly argues with me.

I am a very pessimistic Fed fan at times, and even I feel about as good as a fan can feel heading into Wimbledon. At almost 38, there is nothing more than you can ask for. I know it can suck at times when he gives you the hope and then does not win, but to be honest, the ride is what makes it fun and emotional for me.

Without losses that hurt, the wins would not feel as great (remember that AO17 feeling?). I just want him to give us a good run this year, and I think halle helped in that regard.

I don't care about Rafa and Djoker till Fed has to play them, and regardless of their forms... Fed is great for a reason... Maybe he will give us more, he always has. :p

No point in worrying about Djokr bc he's 7 matches away, and anything can happen. Also, unlike WB15, this Fedr was already tested even before the WB19 draw is made (vs. Stan at RG, vs. Stronga & RBA in Halle). This WB is a great chance. Fingers crossed.

I wonder what Fed's schedule will be like for the rest of the year. I would guess it'll go Wimbledon - Cincinnati - USO - LC - Shanghai - Basel - London ... but if he wins Wimbledon he has a chance for #1, so he'd add either Montreal or Paris. 2017 he messed up not by playing Montreal but by not preparing well for it. So Maybe the rest of his year should be like 2018 (i.e playing Paris). 2017 & 2018 were both missed chances to end the year #1 - imagine he'd won Indian Wells, gone at least QF in Miami, won Halle and at least final of Wimbledon - and all of these were easily doable - he could have easily got it even with Djokovic winning everything in the second half. Obviously one step at a time but imagine at 38 ending the year No. 1:eek:
