Tsonga deserves a fine.

Only got 7 games off Rafa. Deserves to be fined all of his prize money for not putting in an effort. Embarrassing. Not at a professional level at all.

You do have to wonder, if Tomic didn’t have the reputation he has, would he have gotten fined?
Tsonga is coming off major career ending type of injury so he has a good excuse

Why would he be fined all of it when he won 2 matches? Are you saying his wins should not count?

How about being on the safe side and not incurring a reputation for doing it in the first place?

Pouille is following his footsteps!
At least Tsonga has the age excuse, the other one is just a headcase.
And no forget "Ali" defeat 8 years ago a much greater version of Federer.
Bad moments for the Tour if young tennis players in their fullness are devastated by much older rivals.
Sad times, indeed!

Tomic was robbed.

Even if you believe there was some punishment deserved - taking away the entire prize money is egregious and only proves the extreme power imbalance between players and organizers.

It's a bit too good to be true type of bureaucratic convenience for a tournament's punishment to be worth exactly the sum total of a whole prize money.

Yep. No injury and purposefully was missing first serves. Played just fine against Fed for ATP500 Halle.

Tsonga seems to have been paid off by Don Toni. Must have got more money than what ITF prize money could give him.

Half truth, Tomic's nickname is "Tank Engine" and he is known by everyone for his lack of ability to compete and his disdain for effort.
At least, his compatriot Kyrgios has moments of seriousness, occasionally, that produce in the spectators a part of his money has been well spent. I give him that credit when he stops doing antics.
With Tomic there is not even a moment of inspiration that is worth seeing a match of him.
He does not even pretend to show a minimum of competitiveness and when the player has a history, the defense that can be made of him is left in a bad state.

If Tsonga is fined so should Pouille for his nonchalant attitude against Federer.

The penalty is actually quite lenient. It could just as easily be a period of suspension from the tour.

You know this forum has a rep for being full of nutcases and tinfoil hat types? I wonder how it could possibly get that rep with the obsessed fan boys and girls throwing insults at each other, because they love one member of the big three and hate all the others. Tennis doesn't stop with three players for f**k sake.

As for Tsonga being fined, don't be f**king ridiculous. He didn't tank the match, time and injuries have simply caught up with him. He simply doesn't have the tools to compete with the very best anymore.

Anybody who saw both matches know that Tsonga did not ever get engaged and Pouille did. Pouille was still fighting in the end. Neither one played good overall, but Pouille had his moments. One was an easy match and one was essentially a walk-over.

If he not show fighting spirit with just 25 years old ... he would be Tomic.

Fining a player for effort is purely opinion based. You cannot make the rule on paper so you cannot enforce it.

I like tsonga but if tomic got fined, he should too. Along with everyone else who loses an uncompetitive match.

Terrible rule but a terrible organization.

That's one too many words for saying "Selective punishment by a corrupt organization". 8-B

Playing is a privilege and there is no entitlement. It is a mutual benefit where players are paid to compete at the highest level. This isn’t an appearance fee they give to a player to show up and wash out. It is almost $90,000 that has to be earned.

Watch that match and tell em again where Tomic was trying to earn it and hold up his side of things. I musta missed it.

Perhaps he should be fined

Except that the rule is that the fine can only take place in the first round

Thus Tomic was properly fined and Tsonga was properly not fined

End of discussion

Honestly, Tsonga has been bad for years. Unbearable to watch. He knows he has zero chance against the top guys....................just collecting a paycheck. Sad.

The grass must be slower than ever given some of the results. What happened to Tsongas groundies over the years though? He just doesnt hit the ball nearly as cleanly as he used to. He still has great touch at the net though.
