The match against Tsonga was definitely not winnable for Tomic.. His effort was pathetic but he never really had a shot.

Probably not but there might have been a small chance had he given full effort. He has some good results on grass...prob his best surface.

Why tank at Wimbledon of all places but then have the motivation to play the Winnipeg Challenger?

I guess there is no need for reason and logic when you have so many millions to count.

I don't necessarily think it's motivation to play Winnipeg but if he doesn't then he's facing having to play qualifying for the US Open which he did last year and failed to qualify. If he can have a deep run at this very easy draw in Winnipeg then he'll get back into around the 90s and make the direct cutoff for the USO and get that big payday.

Tomic needs to do something quickly before he becomes irrelevant.
Fun fact time:

Tomic currently holds a title (Chengdu where he beat Fognini in the final).

Here's some big name players who currently don't hold a title:
#12 Del Potro
#14 Coric
#17 Cilic
#18 Goffin
#21 Raonic
#22 Wawrinka
#23 Felix
#25 Diego
#26 Verdasco
#27 Pouille
#39 Querrey
#52 Dimitrov
and many more.

I think Shapovalov still never won an ATP title.

It's easy enough to criticise Tomic without saying stupid things, but yet ...

And he's going to play challengers to improve his ranking obviously.

I don't get this guy at all.

He gives no effort at Wimbledon (on grass which should suit his game) in a winnable match against old washed up Tsonga, yet is willing to travel and play in random challengers? Very odd.

he might have had bad planning, and it could be the combination:
- exhausted after Antalya QF
- Tsonga, and he didn't believe in a win

The Winnipeg Challenger on the other side can give him ranking points.
One can easily be around top 50 by getting most of the points in Challengers.
This translates into direct access to GS + some other big tournaments.
Perhaps next time he won't play the week prior to GS.

He'll make the main draw, but he's no certainty to get the payday.

Sorry to tell you mate but he lost to Kokkinakis on Court 12 on Day 1 of the qualies. So he was barely at the USO. He was all smiles before the match and he was pretty smiley when he lost. They seemed quite friendly to each other.

It was a very peculiar match. Bernie won the first set pretty easy. Then Tsitsipas's dad of all people shows up along with Patrick Mouratoglou and not long after (it may have been right after) Koki went on a run of about 9 games, if I recall, and won the last two sets easy. Like I said, a very peculiar match. And I still don't know why those two were watching.

Don't get snippy Darcy.

I read what you wrote. I just added a little color from the match. A sense of what went down. :p

I got your point. I just found it a stupid one. I don't expect you to share my opinion that your comment was stupid.

Tomic actually gave his future itinerary in response to a question at Wimbledon so you weren't listening as I'm not surprised he's in Winnipeg.

I know it's fun to laugh at people throwing their careers away, but his Wimbledon is over so it's time to humiliate someone else presumably.

You totally missed the point but then that's typical.

How is the point stupid? He tanks at the biggest tournament of the year in a winnable match (if he tried) on his best surface no less only to turn around and play a challenger in the middle of nowhere. Its bizarre, even for Tomic standards.

As far as laughing at him and humiliating him, I wasn't doing either. Just questioning his perplexing decisions. I've actually met him socially and find his game interesting.

... reminds me of old videogames !

what's the price of a ticket to see tomic tanking ? :)
(less than a wimbledon one ?) ;)
Ah, les regrettés Nordiques...

Winnipeg's not quite the middle of nowhere, they have that really nice Human Rights museum:

Yeah, I also will not criticize or humiliate Tomic. Occam's razor tells me that he actually needs serious help -- from a mental illness perspective. And he is in the worst possible sport to have mental health problems.

I truly fear for the guy's life. From the limited coverage I've seen in the press, he seems like the type of individual that might be found unresponsive in his hotel room by housekeeping one morning. I truly hope he gets the help he needs or someone who cares about him can encourage him to get help.

None of us knows how he felt that day.
He could have fatigue after Antalya.
He could have had a bad day.
And he is not known to have the most professional approach, but nevertheless, the guy made it to the top, so he certainly knows something about this game.

Squeeze architecture style?
I dunno, deconstructivism? I saw a conference about the structural engineering aspects of the project, and we saw a "first draft" by the architect. It was basically a bunch of scribbles on a napkin, which was probably then fed to a team of 40 interns to make into a building.

As long as this thread is about Tomic, I may as well throw in my opinion: he can do what he wants with his life. He has lived his life in the shadow of an abusive father, has worked excessively hard in his youth - which was essentially taken from him - and now does whatever he wants. Who am I to criticize him?

Going to Winterpeg is a bit odd, however. I mean Winnipeg.

Kinda like blablavla said, how do we know he didn't have the ****s that day? Didn't want to run too much for fear of crapping his pants. Or maybe his wig was coming off, and was afraid of running too fast? Oops, wrong era.

Because if he tries at Wimbledon ... and fails ... he is a failure in his own eyes. But if he doesnt try at all, that gives him the inner excuse for not winning. "I didnt try, so I lost." As opposed to "I tried, and lost, and the world sees that I am a loser."

Kyrgios suffers from this too.

5 cents, please.

Given you only made the thread to make fun of him, I'm sure you are overqualified in the insensitivity department.

But, oh lord, I guess you also forgot imy invitiation for someone new and fresh to humiliate. Do you have any suggestions?

:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Oh lord. I guess that qualifies as a humiliating insult in today's oversensitive world.

You honestly have mental issues...or at least reading comprehension problems.

Read my first post. How am I trying to "make fun of him"?

I posed a legit question simply trying to make sense of his actions which I found perplexing. Wasn't making fun of him in any way.

I find it strange that a guy would tank at the worlds most prestigious tournament, on his best surface, but still have the desire to play in a random far off challenger. Is that too hard for you to understand?

Nevermind actually, it probably is.

Another question is why he preferred Winnipeg challenger to Newport which is on grass.
I assume that he won't play grass (Antalya + Wimbledon) -> Hard (Winniprg) -> grass (Newport)
rather it is a transition to the hard courts before US Open.
On one side, reaching an assumed QF in Newport = 45 points, which he can beat only with a final or win in Winnipeg
On the other side, he doesn't appear as WC in Winnipeg, which means Winnipeg was his back-up plan if he doesn't reach the second week of Wimbledon
