Minor correction, but Canadian Leylah Annie did not win the AO jrs. She was defeated in the final by Clara Tauson of Denmark. (What's with these young Danes? Clara is currently the #1 ranked junior.) Leylah did make it to the SF here at RG last year as a 15 year old, losing to 14 yo (at the time) Cori Gauff!


And, I'll have to add Martin Damm Jr to my watch list too!

It's Denmark against the USA in the boys' singles final at the French Open after straight sets wins this morning for both Holger Rune over Martin Damm, jnr., 6-4, 6-2, and Toby Alex Kodat over Shintaro Mochizuki, 6-3, 6-4.

In the girls' singles final it's Canada vs the USA after Leylah Annie Fernandez beat Maria Camila Osorio Serrano, 6-2, 6-4, and Emma Navarro defeated Qinwen Zheng, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Congratulations to Canada's Leylah Annie Fernandez on her win earlier today in the girls' singles final at the French Open where she beat Emma Navarro of the USA, 6-3, 6-2.

And well done to Denmark's Holger Rune on his victory over the American Toby Alex Kodat in the boys' singles final, which was interrupted by rain at one set-all. When play resumed the Dane took six games in a row to score a 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-0 win.

I was just checking out some Martin Damm Jr videos/articles and read that he was 6' 6 1/2" when he was 14! Is he heading to Opelka territory? Has he continued to grow?

Vondrousova is teen player and thought she played good semi but Ash too strong in the final. Pretty amazing result for this teen! FO open final is well done! Pretty unsure about her game though not know much about her. Best of all th - no screaming!

I had watched Marketa a couple of years ago and was so impressed. I was actually surprised that it took so long for her to break out. Does she have what it takes?

An excellent performance from Jannik Sinner yesterday in 's-Hertogenbosch where, in the first round of qualifying, he beat the Pole Lukasz Lacko 6-7(6), 7-6(5), 6-2. In the second and final round of qualifying on Sunday Sinner will face fellow Italian Thomas Fabbiano, the no. 2 seed.

Also in the qualifying event at the same tournament Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the no. 6 seed, beat Nicolas Mahut, 6-2, 6-4. On Sunday ADF, who recently turned 20, will face the Italian Andrea Arnaboldi for a place in the main draw.

So, after his success in the final round of qualfying in 's-Hertogenbosch, Jannik Sinner has been allocated his place in the main singles draw. In first-round action the Italian will take on Nicolas Jarry of Chile, with the winner of that match to face Stefanos Tsitsipas, the no. 1 seed. The top four seeds have a bye in the first round.

Alexander Davidovich Fokina also qualified for the main draw after beating Andrea Arnaboldi, 7-6,(5), 7-5. In the first round ADF will face David Goffin, the no. 5 seed.

Miomir Kecmanovic is to play 1R ATP250 Stuttgart today but has drawn a tough assignment vs the very local veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber. 85 miles is less than an hour away via autobahn from Kohlie’s Augsburg home to Stuttgart.

A teenage fratricide 2R match at the Lyon Challenger resulted in a 6-1 6-3 win for Rudi Molleker over the French WC Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc. In 3R, Molleker will face another French WC Manuel Guinard.

Félix into his third ATP final, this time courtesy of a Raonic WO in Stuttgart! Can it be the breakthrough after disappointments at Rio and Lyon? Only Berrettini stands in his way, who is quite the surprise this week with his steady cut through the draw (0 sets lost, no TBs required). The Italian faced his first two BPs this week in today’s match vs Struff and defended both, this despite having only won one MD match on grass in his career.

No luck for Félix and very little rest for him as he heads to Queens Club in London for his second grass ATP experience and a 1R match vs Grigor Dimitrov.

Also playing on grass, courtesy of a WC from the Halle organizers, is German teen Rudolf Molleker. The teen won a 1R match last year at Stuttgart, defeating his countryman JL Struff behind a barrage of aces. His opponent in 1R will be qualifier Sergiy Stakhovsky.

In addition to 18-year-old Felix Auger Aliassime's great run at Queen's Club, where in today's semi-finals he takes on a player twice his age, Feliciano Lopez, it's worth noting the success of 17-year-old Giulio Zeppieri, who as a wildcard has reached the semi-finals at the Challenger in Parma in his native Italy. Later today he will face his 27-year-old compatriot Federico Gaia for a place in the final.

Down at ITF level, 16-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz Gafia has reached the semi-finals of the tournament in Martos, on home soil. Later on Saturday he will face the top seed, the American Kevin King, for a place in the final.

Miomir Kecmanovic gained DE into Antalya and plays Jaume Munar.

Paul Jubb (19, GBR) received a WC into Eastbourne qualies and defeated two seeds (Istomin and Rublev) to gain main draw, where he will play Taylor Fritz.

The men’s qualifying event for Wimbledon began earlier today in overcast but very humid weather in London. Some of the teenagers in action on the opening day include the Scot Aidan McHugh, who has been very quiet of late and appears to have dropped out of the Top 1000; he will play 20-year-old Mikael Ymer in first-round action later on Monday.

The 17-year-old English wildcard Jack Draper has been drawn against the Japanese player Yasutaka Uchiyama. Some observers felt that Draper should have been given a wildcard into the main men’s singles draw this year. But both Draper and, Tseng Chun-hsin, the player he faced in the final of the boys’ singles event at last year’s Wimbledon were overlooked. Earlier today Tseng took on the American Tommy Paul, the no. 30 seed, in the first round of qualifying and was beaten 6-3, 6-3.

The 20-year-old Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, boys’ singles champion at Wimbledon in 2017, has been seeded no. 26 in the qualifying draw and will face the 21-year-old Japanese player Yosuke Watanuki later on Monday.

Alexei Popyrin (19) is also in qualies. He's into the 2nd round.

Looking forward to the Main Draw, the teens are: FAA, Kecmanovic, and Paul Jubb (mentioned by @stringertom above), who received a wild card.

Paul, an orphan, just won the NCAA D1 Single championship back in May. He will be an interesting one to follow in the future.

I pray that this youngster will develop into a force on the tour. He has all the ingredients to save tennis from itself - variety, court sense, shotmaking ability, touch at the net, one-handed backhand, etc. He's the new Baby Fed - let's hope that unlike Dimitrov the Mug that he delivers on his sky high talent.

His path has been sporadic since winning USO’18/AO’19. Sinner has done much more at pro level and two younger juniors (Rune and Damm) seem poised to make up the year gap in experience.

If you look at this crop of talent as a continuation of the FAA era (he’s just a year older than all but RuneDamm), Musetti will take a prime time top shelf position in the rivalries. I’m not sure about his surface fluency when it comes to grass but he looks strong on either HC or clay.

Qualifier Alexei Popyrin was even more efficient by winning in straight sets over the veteran Spaniard Pablo Carreño Busta. He will play either Daniil Medvedev or Paolo Lorenzi.

Serbian teen Miomir Kecmanovic is scheduled to begin his match vs another Spaniard Roberto Carballés Baena as the last men’s match on today’s slate.

Kecmanovic makes it 3 for 3 for the teen brigade on day 1. He won 26 63 63 61. Nice strong finish!
Tomorrow we'll see how Jubb does against Sousa.

Two rounds of Wimby’19 Boys competition is complete and there are the expected wins and the totally unexpected wins:

The Danish prodigy Rune (Borg’s middle name BTW) continues his Channel slam domination with two easy wins from his #1 seed slot.

#4 seed Martin Damm also is advancing but a bit less easily, dropping a set in his first match. Two more match wins from Rune and Damm and they will play a SF rematch of their RG SF.

To reach that SF, Damm may need to shut down red hot #10 seed Carlos Alcaraz Garfia’s run (lost 8 games in two matches). To set up that very contrasting matchup, CAG plays LL American Will Grant and Damm plays northern neighbor Taha Baadi from Canada.

The bottom half is wide open with only three seeds making the 3R. Highest seed is #6 Brandon Nakashima of San Diego.

Another Canadian teenager, Liam Draxl, has reached the quarter-finals of the boys' doubles event at this year's Wimbledon with the American Govind Nanda. An unseeded pair, on Friday they will take on the no. 2 seeds, Holger Rune and Shintaro Mochizuki, for a place in the last four.

I thought today’s QF for CAG vs Martin Damm would be fairly one-sided for Damm and it was, 6-1 6-4. The Spanish teen was probably on fumes after winning yesterday 8-6 in the third and he just doesn’t have a service weapon.

Another Spanish Carlos (Gimeno Valero) did scratch his way into the SFs with a 7-5 third set win over Czech teen Dalibor Srvcina.

SFs are:

Damm vs Mochizuki

CGV vs French teen Harold Mayot

I have Damm winning it all with his SF being a de facto final.

Wow! A 10-8 third set win for Mochizuki over Damm after they traded bakery products 6-1 0-6 10-8.

Mochizuki will play the final vs surprise Spanish Carlos Gimeno Valero, who beat Mayot a little more easily, 6&4. A junior Nishikori vs Nadal, no?

Carlos Gimeno Valero, a tall player with a slim build, was up a break in the first set and down a break in the second before beating Harold Mayot in straight sets to reach the boys' singles final at Wimbledon on Friday. The Spaniard has a very good forehand, which he hits deceptively easy and with which he can generate great pace and depth. I haven't seen Shintaro Mochizuki play yet.

In the boys' doubles final the top-seeded Czechs Jiri Lehecka and Jonas Forejtek will take on Canada's Liam Draxl and the American Govind Nanda, the no. 7 seeds.

This thread is for people who enjoy watching the young talent. We don't know who will make it and who won't. That's part of the excitement. If you want to crap on everyone, then you don't belong in this thread. There are other threads where you can take your 'cheery' attitude.

Here’s some updates:

At Umag, the Croatia Open ATP250, which could use a new name (Italian Open in summer...six Italians DE and 4 attempting to qualify!). WC Jannik Sinner has drawn Pedro Sousa (POR); also Rudi Molleker is in qualies as the #2 seed and plays Italian Fabrizio Ornago. Also, a Croatian teen without ranking, Admir Kalender, is a WC in qualies.

In Bastad, the Swedish Open ATP250 aka the Northern Spanish Open (5 MD and 3 attempting to qualify including the #1 seed Pablo Carreno Busta!) there are zero teens in MD but an unranked Swedish teen John Hallqvist Lithen plays as a WC in the qualies tomorrow vs Constant Lestienne.

I noticed that FAA withdrew from Atlanta for this upcoming week. I presume it is so that he doesn't overtax his body....a lesson learned after injuring himself immediately prior to the French Open.

he announced it was due to fatigue, good call. Felix, Shapo, and Bibi are all scheduled for Washington and Rogers.

Shintaro Mochizuki wins the Wimby’19 Boys title with a comprehensive 3&2 defeat of Carlos Gimeno Valero in the Sunday final.

The Czech mates Jonas & Jiri (Forejtek/Lehecka) captured the doubles title over the Can-Am tandem of Liam Draxl/Govind Nanda, 5&4.

Congrats to all!
