Depressed Federer fans check in here

Honestly wish Wimbledon had passed me by to some extent this year. Like I’d booked a vacation this past week or something and didn’t invest much time in it other than checking scores.

I’ll feel better by tomorrow but I feel like I lost a piece of my soul after those 5 hours (plus the Rafa match). Such a gut wrenching loss. Just ONE decent serve on those 2 match points. Or anything other than that lousy forehand on the net approach on the second. I can only imagine how much that will eat at Roger himself tonight and in the coming days. I know he’s a multi-millionaire and whatnot but we know what it means to him, this will be really tough to take.

Damn. It’s getting tougher and tougher to remain a Federer fan. I need to drastically lower my expectations. Maybe, I will stick around to see if he can have a more epic collapse, like blowing a 6-1, 6-1, 5-0 lead in a slam final, or lose 3 tiebreakers in a slam final after having a 6-0 lead in each tiebreaker. I won’t put any of this past Fed. If anybody can do it, it’s Fed.

Fed will one day have a more epic collapse. We can take that to the bank. The question is if I will be stupid enough to watch it.

I would have to be some kind of lunatic to remain a Fed fan

This loss might be the straw that broke the camel’s back.

I don’t understand what he was doing at 40-30. That was a horrible approach shot. He proceeds to miss a first serve on deuce. He leaves a short ball in the middle of the court.

The only reason I can think of are his nerves being in pieces.

He needs to hit it close to that line and send Novak scrambling on that side. I actually thought immediately after that point that in a match where he was really feeling the drop shot, that a drop shot to that side would have been a fitting way to end the match.

It felt like he was throwing shots into the middle of the court just hoping Novak would miss as that particular game went on.

There is NO reason for Fed fans to be depressed. I know it's a hard loss. But what Federer is doing is truly miraculous at his age. He gave his everything out there, and you should all be proud.

I mean I've never been a big Federer fan, but what he did against Nadal in AO 2017 (and subsequently) and how he pushed Djoker to the brink, today, is simply remarkable.

It's not the stats and the number of slams that would make Federer the greatest of his time.
It is this ability to adapt himself, to improve his game even at 37 yrs, and still play his tennis and play it better than anyone - even rivals who are far younger.

You don't even need to be a Federer fan to understand how special he truly is..

He’s choked against many players. He has now lost 22 matches where he had match points. That’s absurd. Djoker has lost 2, Murray 5, Nadal 7. Federer has lost far more matches where he had match points than the rest of the Big 4 combined. He has also lost tons of matches where he out-scored his opponents. The bottom line is that Fed chokes at key times far more often than most of the other great players.

I figured that Djoker would have had a 7-3 edge in service breaks, not the other way around.

The blown 5-3 lead in the first tiebreaker was terrible too. 0-3 in tiebreakers. Wow. 0/3 on match points, including 2 on his own damn serve.

These collapses are getting really old as a fan. I don’t know if I can take it anymore, to be honest.

My house is sparkling clean, as I go on a cleaning spree when depressed. Anyone is the West Philly area who needs their house cleaned, clothes washed, grass mowed, etc, let me know.

Oh..how I wish you were in the mid west. Or I were in Philly. I could absolutely use some help. Haha.

For some reason, he didn’t attack Novak’s shot at 40-30. He should’ve.

That was a classic example of a shot he shouldn't come in on especially against Djokovic. He was way too far back and nowhere near covering a crosscourt pass. Up until that point he had been pretty good at avoiding that situation.

This is a really good point. If Federer got in even one big serve on the four points from 40-15, he'd likely be okay. Djokovic is going to dig in at match point down, but if Federer can either close it out with a big serve right away or at least hold off the charge after Djokovic saves match points, he should be able to weather the storm. Not getting one big serve on those four points showed how nervous he was. And his groundstrokes were all pushes too, as he was too nervous to go for his shots.

i think fed should've gave himself more time in between the points. felt like he rushed all the points.

Checking in here to say one thing: no matter how old, or how experienced we all are - there's a very different sort of training required for dealing with mental challenges. Loads of professional experience can help you, but it's more important now than ever for everyone to learn how to deal with their mind and get healthier mentally. Meditation like mindfulness should be mandatory in all learning institutions - sports too. Look at Kyrgios and the potential just waiting there - the amount of progress that can be made by mental training is unbelievable - it's a kind of new superpower.

I feel Fed, even at 38, is crying out for mental training. I don't think he has been getting any guidance there (correct me if I am wrong). I can't begin to imagine the weight of expectations these players have, the messed up thoughts, the swirl of emotions, fear and anxiety on big points in slams. We're all human, and most of us except a few really trained ones, are just winging it in the mental department. Yes, I will say it again, we're just winging it. It's unknown territory, for all of us be it Fed or Nole. We just need a map, one territory, one city at a time.

He should get mental training so that he can use his twilight years and catapult himself even more, because it's clear that he has got physical attributes (which will not last infinitely), but he just needs that mental edge.

I have never got so emotionally attached except with Federer as a sports-man...
Watching sports sucks. I had to turn it off and on about a dozen times...
When he retires I am never going to allow myself to get this emotionally invested in any sports player ever again I promise... BTW, it wasn't my choice to have this happen...

This one was obviously the most strange loss in their rivalry because of all those shanking by Federer on at least 15 key points from forehand side, then 2 match points lost on Federer's serve. Let's be a real fan though. 38 yo Federer played well and almost had 32 yo Djokovic. What a legendary stuff.

But nobody remembers second place. Federer handed this match on a silver platter for Djokovic. I didn’t think he was gonna win after blowing that.

I don’t think it’s ever been this extreme, though. He defended his second serve better, won more points on return, manufactured more break points – all stats you’d expect Djoker to win. 40 more winners but only 10 more unforced. That’s insane. I can’t see him ever having a performance quite that good against Djokovic. And he didn’t even win.

He literally won the wrong points, and those 10 additional UEs more or less literally add up to the difference in the 1st set tb, converting his 3rd set bp, his 2 match points, and his bp's at 11-11.

So, so close. In fact, had either his 1st serve or his fh on his first mp landed in, Djoker was in all kinds of trouble.

Even though Fed was never ahead in the match until he broke Djoker to serve for the Championship in the 5th, he ended up playing an excellent match and could have won it.

You can't ask for anything more in a loss.

What in the hell is going on here. Good grief. The man had two match points against the number one player in the world. He outplayed Joker much of the day. He owned his own serve against the best returner of all time. I do not believe he choked. He probably played one match point return off of his damn shoes swinging a bit late and probably pressed too much on the second. He does not need mental training. He has won 20 slams and was one point of defeating an in form Nadal and Joker back to back. He has won his share of big points while others have shrunk in the moment. At the end of the day he is a tennis player and not the God that many of his fans were sucked into believing he was while the competition sucked. He has won matches earlier in his career before even stepping on the court because of the intimidation factor. That has been gone for years and he has still won his share. Joker and Nadal both owe him for setting the bar they have tried to overcome. This is real sport here and not a drama being acted out. He is currently at the top of the game. Winning the USO would not shock me. Quit crying. He has.

Djokovic has plenty of mental training. He's almost a guru in that respect and very self aware of his consciousness and being in the moment.

In the tennis channel interview , he almost recited the dichotomy of control of Stoicism. A philosophy.

Basically that is one of the factors that make Novak so strong. He said he promised himself that he can't do anything about the opponent and the crowd. But he can do everything about his own mental state and fortitude. And that he would retain his calm and composure and believe in himself, no matter what happened. He said he was determined to do that since the beginning of the match which was his promise to himself.

That he would fully control what he could and give it his very best. Then he was indifferent to the outcome. That is precisely why Novak won. If Fed had adopted that, he might not have been anxious on match points. It's about being in the moment and being able to give it your very best..

I think us fans need to get behind Roger. Don't be so hard on him. His level was insane this Wimbledon. He is not going to get much worse in just one year unless he is injured. He will be back for another shot at Wimbledon. Only Novak and Rafa can hang with him. He is still light years ahead of the field if he remains healthy.

That's the point I was making. It's a bit like comparing someone who's read 10 books vs 500 books. If Nole has done that, he's the smarter one here. Fed does need some assistance (everyone does at some level).

To everyone here, I'm posting this pic because I love the nostalgia in it - the happy faces, the youth, the effect of time. Time has not been kind and will not be kind on anyone. So let's enjoy what we've had so far and appreciate what these fantastic guys have achieved.

I don't appreciate it. I am jealous of it. they make ton of money hitting a yellow ball. Anyway, they got it real good better than 99.999 % of the people in the world. In that sense, roger has nothing to be depressed about. He should wake up tomorrow..... and say "WOW,, look what I got,,,,,,, 100 million in the bank and ton of goodies.................WOW"

It hurts because this will likely be the end of Federer’s career. The other slams are too slow and Federer is too old to grind with Djokovic. It also hurts that there is absolutely no young upcoming all time great player to watch. The sport is going to be garbage for along time soon.

I couldn't agree more with you. Some of these things should be mandatory in school. Hell, even before you get your driving license. Everyone needs that assistance and can benefit from it tremendously.

If you see/read what Novak has done off court, he is become a master of so many philosophical teachings and spiritual constructs. He is incredibly self-aware. People think it's stupid, but I'll tell you that's why he's having all the success.

Tennis is played more between the ears and less with the racquet at the very top level.

They've earned it. A case in point, someone who was given a great start in his career but almost made a complete mess of it - Bernard Tomic. These guys here in comparison, Nole and others like him, have achieved glory and they've worked harder than many others for it. Do appreciate it, time is limited for everyone. These players, once they retire, will vanish. There won't be anyone like them, they're that unique.

HOw do you know Tomic didn't find out midway in his career that he just isn't good enough to be top 50 all the time ?? People just assume he is a Awsome talent like top 30 guy for sure..... What makes you think he is that ? The way he hits the ball, he has very very high risk game. All of his flat shots are very powerful but has very low margin or error. With that kind of game, you have more bad days than good days. Maybe Tomic is just a 50-100 guy nothing more, and he is just living up to that... and it isn't his fault ????????

I'm not saying Tomic was a magical talent. In case you've not seen his interviews and behaviour, he couldn't care less about being on court, let alone win tournaments. When you said 'they got it real good better than 99.999 % of the people in the world', what is it that you mean? They have it automatically? They went from strength-to-strength and multiplied their talent by committing more to it. Sure, some are more talented than others, so some will fall off outside Top 5, 10 or 50. My point is, appreciate what they have done to be top-notch, it doesn't come automatically to anyone. Nole recently went off the rankings, but worked hard to come back. Unlike others, he used his talent and worked hard to propel even further.

Probably a totally different discussion. For now, their talent and hard work is paying off. Unless we find comparable talent to match these, I reckon these players totally deserve their rewards, monetary or otherwise. The question is, do we have a set of players with a combination of talent and hard work that these guys have?

As far as I remember, Djokovic was the one gesticulating and whining a bit when Federer was hitting lines. From a physical expression point of view, Federer shows much less emotion than Djokovic.

It was definitely depressing since Federer got to 15-40 in those championship points with 2 great serves. It was as if it was a done deal. Then he tightens up and loses the next 7 points. Crazy.

I'm really sad after this loss. 40-15. 2 championship points.
Wins in almost every stat count except unforced errors, but his winners compensate for the margin by far. The better player overall, Djokovic just won certain points that set him ahead.
What could have been! It could have been a 10-8 victory or whatever, or a win in the tiebreaker for 13-12.

Alas, I am so proud of Federer, and I cannot agree more with what everyone else has said above about how amazing Federer has been and how all hope is not lost. The US Open is around the corner, and although he got no slams to show for it, if he can be better than the World No. 1 in a final, then surely he'll have another chance in Flushing Meadows.

Sigh, I'm glad there's this community where we can all support each other though. Let's go Federer, and let's not lose hope, fans!

True, but that doesn't mean his mind is free from demons. He probably had a million thoughts that led to him squandering match points. The mind is a terrible machine that needs to be tamed. Fed unfortunately has not got this part of his act together. With Nadal, it took him ages. We will not know what his problem is; he need to sort it out if he wants to make use of precious time he has left on court.

Not sure what to say about that! They probably need an order of magnitude more recovery and rest time than most people, so I'd say it seems natural. Referring to them as 'lazy' makes them sound like they're sloths whose careers are running on auto-pilot!
