What happens around 60?

I find that good shoes do make a considerable difference. I used to buy cheap shoes and use an aftermarket insole which often cost more than the shoes. Now I buy good quality shoes that are previous years models. I track the miles I put on shoes and replace after 300 to 400.

Dude.. I do the same. I get rid of shoes on a hours used basis. :)

Mine was stop and go... that is the killer. Low and slow is better..:)

Running in the city is a pain because you come to red lights, traffic, bicyclists, groups of pedestrians that feel like they have to occupy the entire width of the sidewalk, etc. You really have to know what's going on around you too.

The last doctor I visited with advised me to not get old. I thought it sound advice.

In my family I've noticed everyone is different when they age. My father still is energetic and going strong in his middle 70s. His brothers are generally doing similar. Others in the family I've seen slow down earlier in age.

When I do run.. I try not to use my full gait. Try to run.. jog in the woods on soft surfaces. Now I do HIIT on my outside or inside bike. That does the trick..
The bike is less impact on the whole body. My ortho guy says that is what to use instead of the running bit. He is a runner and says he should have done the bike thing years ago instead of running. He is having issues with his knees now too. The things we know now we wish we would have known years ago.

I'm 63, still reasonably quick, still take 6 flights of stairs two to three times every workday. What I have noticed is that as I've gotten older any injury takes longer to heal, even something as simple as a cut.

Things move down hill after 35

lololololol man, 35:?)).........i pkd up rkt to hit against wall next to a gym @37 on the way downhill >35........lololololol only bcs wanted to save waiting time to warm up on a treadmill b4 doing the weights. so, accidentally learned tennis n extremely lucky dat way actually, as i might have all sort of te/ge/etcetc if learned tennis w/ 'coaches' in a tennis court:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D........................

also feel gr8 downhill gravity gliding when doing shopping w/ a shopping trolley, man. perfect oppo to glide around w/o even moving my legs, simply let myself falling forward. when looking around the supermarket, just wonder why only me doing it n no one else makes the free energy gravity fun run to save pushing the trolley around n faster as well:love::love::love::love::love::love:........................

I bought a Garmin Felix 5+ a year ago after a trip to the emergency room for a heart issue. I would have died without some drug they gave me to restart my heart rhythm. It was a real pain checking my heart rate manually ten times a day.

The HRM is fantastic but it also gives me a lot of other data like sleep, stress, steps, stairs and I can track weight. It will also do running dynamics and coaching. And it’s a music player, has maps of North America for hiking or driving and it can do payments if I go running without my wallet and phone.

My tennis club just resurfaced their indoor tennis courts and track and I’m going to give it a try. I have access to another indoor track at another associated club. I usually just run on pavement outside home or office. There are woods that I can run through as well but the idea of driving seven miles to run three or four is distasteful.

When on the treadmill, I leave my phone with the bio data screen on so I can see if I’m in trouble. I should set the HR alarms too. The reports are nice as they show resting and maximum heart rate by day, week, month or year. It’s orett easy to see whether or not you’re hitting your goals.
Does it purr as well?

I thought about it, but ended up with a Fitbit 3.

It doesn't have a speaker but it vibrates.

They run around $1,000 with the Titanium band and Sapphire screen. The high-end models run $1,500 - $2,500. Those might purr. I suspect that they're going to add LTE in the Fenix 6.

I could play competitive basketball til I was 62, then my knees couldn't take the pounding anymore and I switched over to tennis which seemed like a vacation. I was pretty good for my age and could hang with the youngsters.
7 years later I've slowed down to the point my game now resembles how much I want to play tennis in the worst way.

At 70, I play basketball worse than I did in 8th grade.
14" taller and now can't reach the bottom of the net.
Strain just a bit on freethrows and now cannot shoot college 3's.
In 8th grade, we'd tool the faculty, which consisted of sub 35 year old teachers. Student body was over 1,200, so maybe 40 male teachers including 2 ex NFL DB's.

Do you play on pavement or wood? We have a wood court at my club and it's supposed to be a lot easier on your feet compared to asphalt.

I typically buy $100 tennis shoes. Last one was a Head. The soles seem ok. I've tried swapping $15 Dr Scholls insoles but did not notice much difference.
Mainly concerned with reducing impact on the knees.

USTA claims so.. it depends on how you have played over the years. They are full of it. Real high level players 4.0 plus and over with modern stokes tear their bodies apart. Most players I know that play at a high level have injuries that are related to tennis. Hips.. knees.. ankles.. feet.. shoulders.. wrist.. etc. If you walk around the court with a 110 or larger racketing playing slice and dice tennis.. you can "play" forever.
A few months ago, I was stationed on a project far away from home. The upside was that it allowed me to increase my tennis from once per week to 3x per week. I found this to have anti-aging effects. Playing singles for 2h used to tear my legs apart and require ibuprofen afterward to nurse my sore Achilles and knees. Now I can play 3 days in a row without even feeling it.

One of my good hitting buddy's is 62. He played D1 and generally stayed in shape. He was probably UTR 12-13 back in the day, now he's about 9-10. Still pretty damn good for his age, he can run us around pretty well.

Mine new slogan is: 60 is the new 80.

lolololol, man.................no need slogan to promote, plenty out there already, 60 but look like 80.......actually functioning like 80. if the trendy 60%/30% pop overweight/obeasts keep booming for a while, dat'll b the only way for them to experience '80':-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D................

I think doing resistance training is a big thing as we head into our 50's and 60's. Maintaining muscle mass and strength will help you keep your metabolism and joint mobility at an effective rate. Lots of band work, and dumbbell work along with core stability, rollers and stretches.
For cardio, power walking and swimming are great for fitness and weight management.
A diet full of super foods with anti inflammatory and anti oxidant properties is a good thing, and eliminating vices ( Smoking, alcohol etc)
Best supplements ( or my favourite ones) include magnesium, CoQ10, fish oil, vitamin C, whey protein and bergamet are good.
Focusing on effective periodisation in terms of training intensity, frequency and volume needs to be monitored and this I feel should also include your work/life balance.
Being happy and relaxed without unnecessary stress can do wonders

Icelandic males have the longest life expectancy in the world - 81

They generally eat fresh whole foods not the absolute garbage that's mostly in our supermarket shelves.

When I walk around tbe supermarket I shudder when I see what is in most folks trolley. I buy only olives from the deli at the supermarket.

Every single bit of junk food you put in to your body has an impact on your longevity.

Does it not mention six score years in the bible?

I understand that figure is only likely were we brought up on organic food till we are adults and continue till we die - with zero junk mixed in.

The Bible says three score and ten or 70 years.

I'd suggest looking at Blue Zone research. These are research studies on communities that live the longest in the world. Offhand, some commonalities are:

- community
- a lot of exercise (like walking to your neighbor's or gardening)
- beans (several other staple foods too)
- vegetarian diet or fish/vegetarian diet

bible:?)).......blablabla..............long due update/upgrade, lololololol man. 70 back then might b the extremely rare 1s n capped ceiling while most of ppl'r lucky to reach 45. now 45 is typical mid age...............in next couple centuries 70 will be mid age, i mean, after the culling:love::love::love::love::love::love::love::love::love:................................

The days of our years are threescore years and ten;
and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years,
yet is their strength labor and sorrow;
for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

Maybe some genetic engineering to shorten life.

Most mammals get about 1 billion heartbeats, which at 60bpm works out to ~31.7 years. Humans obviously do quite a bit better, actually the great apes in general do better - chimps can get to mid thirties, and have a resting heart rate around 80 to 90bpm.

The Bible states that there were people that lived 600, 700, 800 years old and then things were changed to 70 or 80. It may be a genetic switch or series of genetic switches that control this. It would be very cool to find these switches.

Light reading again man..:)

The infinite powers book is light reading. It's not a math book. I have about 14 calculus books in one of my math and science bookcases at home and there are a few that I'd like to get started on. The book on Fractal Geometry is as it relates to the financial markets. It is not a math book - it's probably aimed at the finance professional. It helps to have a computer science background to read some of the ideas - Mandelbrot was brilliancy at such a high level and sometimes you get the feeling that he assumes that we know what he knows.

I would like to learn about Fractal Geometry from a proper math book but it's a tough decision on getting the original book from several decades ago; or a modern graduate textbook which covers the bases.

U.S has the highest antidepressant use in the world at 110 per 1000 followed by.......Iceland.

Korea has the lowest rate at only 13 per 1000.

That was when they drank from the “fountain of youth”, no fast foods and no process foods were in existence!

Is there a significant difference in longevity between regularly consuming tinned food, soda, cheezels, ice cream,KFC / McDonalds, alcohol etc,etc and a diet of fresh organic fruit, vegetables, honey, seeds etc.

Most Americans and people generally believe there's not....lol.

It's hard to do a controlled study given individual differences but the Blue Zone research seems decent as it compares groups of people so the individual differences may be minimized by using averages.

Koreans drink alcohol instead.
lolololololol, manohman...................together w/ 'hot dog' which's totally different from hotdogs in western countries. literally real dog meat, man.........w/ plenty hot chilly etcetc, extremely hot but very very yumyumyummy n dat's ~40 yrs ago. same/similar traditions in nearby areas of china next to nth korea. heard of a few yrs ago it's not allowed to kill dogs anymore:love::love::love::love::love::love:................

As much as I love the Bible and many of its truths, it is not a scientific journal so I'd take those numbers with a grain of salt.

Man's longevity has continued to rise in the industrialized world suggesting that we aren't doing a whole lot wrong. But everyone should be well aware that regular exercise is key followed by a moderate well balanced diet of mostly plants. But not everyone really buys into that because "magical thinking".

I would add that avoiding the flu promotes longevity and quality of life.

53 here so close to 60 and I hope nothing drastic happens at 60. Most people think I am 40. I play tennis religiously and in the off season I am in the gym 5 days a week doing core and strength training. Of course age is having its ways with me in ways I cannot protect with exercise. Vision and Prostate come to mind. I wonder what else will go wrong that exercise cannot help prevent.

53 is not close to 60 ... 55 wasn't either for me. 59 is/was.

Repeating myself in this thread ... I would have made body weight squats part of my routine after 50. Not a gym guy ... body weight squats would have been easy and very helpful. Better late than never.
