What was the rationale behind Pogba taking it?

Sounded like a lot of jibber jabber. Ole said that he has 2 penalty takers, and they just sort it out between themselves when a penalty comes. Rashford also defended Pogba. He's all like, sometimes you just wanna take the penalty. OK then. Gary Neville speculating that this could just be Pogba protection. lol

What am I thinking... I should really stop talking about who outplayed whom. We have lost in such manner plenty of times over the last decade or so and never got sympathy for that, with the simplistic explanations how you don't deserve it if you don't score more than the opponent. Apparently context becomes important when we are discussing someone else. Those who don't like United gave the explanations why they actually didn't deserve to knock out PSG. Then Liverpool's missed opportunities at Camp Nou were quickly pointed out. But ours at Anfield, and Ajax throwing it away as well... Crickets. 4-0. 2-3. Good night Tiki, reality check Tiki, Premier League rules the world...

Si, I can see on myself that even the old frustrations are back. So football is back. And welcome back. (y)

Need another scorer. Lindgard looked shambolic today. He got 2-3 perfect deliveries into the box or right outside of it and scuffed all of them.

People do that in every sport and it's almost impossible to ever make it not sound like sour grapes. The only thing that matters in football are the goals. Which is why United will once again drop a ton of pts this year that they "shouldn't" have. Because they have very few finishers.

To clarify I can see how one could argue things such as who outplayed the other but it's arbitrary. The only non arbitrary thing we ever have is the final score. But that's just my take on it. I am not a big fan of moral victories unless the moral victor was a gigantic underdog.

Coutinho joined Bayern on a season long loan. Dembele set for another five weeks on the sidelines. That kid is actually made of poor quality glass, not just any glass. With Suarez out and Messi doubtful, Griezmann might be all on his own against Betis in our first home game of the season. And the Neymar rumors just won't stop. Poor beginning...

Not replacing Lukaku with anyone will make it tougher, but I think they are not creating a lot for Rashford and Martial to work with anyway. When the opponents keep Pogba quiet, there goes a big threat, and he sometimes does a wonderful job at keeping himself quiet as well. Like today. Mata and Alexis are also too much past it to make the impact they used to be well known for.

La Liga is better. All the Premier League is any team that plays Liverpool or City park the bus and whoever out of those 2 break more buses throughout the year win the league.

It's incredibly cumbersome to watch. Even Tottenham did nothing but park the bus and counterattack vs City. 30-3 shots. How shambolic.

Thankfully the park the bus stratagem is almost always exposed in the Champions League. Though the away goals rule helps bus companies stay afloat.

However I must say it is highly satisfying when one of the two beats a BUS FC team by like 4-6 goals.

Frustrating, thought we were in control for majority of the game. But Molineux is a tough trip for many recently so I am at least glad we got it out of the way.

Yeah, the creativity is lacking.

I think they are looking to Greenwood as the Lukaku replacement. Didn't exactly get much time to make impact tonight. On with 2 minutes left and injury time. Didn't look threatening in the second half apart from the penalty. James had the difficult first start. Maybe too keen to make an impression even though he came on and scored last week. None of his crosses finding the target. Got booked for diving.

In the end if I'm just considering this one game then. I'm glad we didn't get beat. Wolves are a bit of a recent bogey team. :p

That's what cups are for, testing everybody's form in the moment and giving weaker teams a chance, while a European competition is up for grabs for any winner, even extreme, relegated cases like Wigan. No "neutral" wants to see a 6-0 demolition like the last FA Cup final. We see way enough of those matches in the leagues.

Our Copa would have delivered more often recently if there weren't two legs in all rounds before the final. But even before the most modern times, Barca and Real had long droughts in that competition. We are talking 10 and 17 years. Yet it was wonderful witnessing other clubs delivering good football and winning that competition. Well, Espanyol aside.

Back when Madrid and us would comfortably finish La Liga with 90+ points, I heard that spoke about the poor quality of the rest. Even though the goal difference is not our first tiebreaker so there is clearly less motivation here to at least keep the scoreline closer once you are getting beaten. And again, no sign of such talk now when City and Liverpool both got nearly 100.

It's not as exposed as much as I would like unfortunately. But yes, just one bus breaking goal is very satisfying.

Barcelona and Real Madrid at their peak teams in the past 10 yrs would have dominated the Premier League too. Liverpool did well to earn England a scrap for themselves in UCL competition. But they've got many more scraps to claim before they can start comparing themselves to the two Spanish giants.

I honestly wish they were all together so we could see for ourselves. And plus it would be a lot more interesting because Tottenham/United/Chelsea/Arsenal are several pegs below City/Liverpool right now. Maybe Tottenham being the closest.

Maybe next time they will think twice before letting go one of their best midfielders and their best goalscorer, without replacing either one of them.

How can you make that many poor choices in the last several years while having the resources to remain at the top is beyond me... Then again we don't have to look further from our own backyard to find another bad example of that. :cautious:

I wouldn't expect United to be on top of any maybe next time event. I came out of the Wolves game pretty satisfied but it was unacceptable to lose today. A little heartbreaking in the way football breaks hearts. Palace at home, early season. :/ Then you think the defense is good. Bloody possession, yeah, that is cool if you do something with it like you guys.

The only maybe next time event they have mastered is the art of passing side to side and backwards.

We are not doing much with the possession compared to the past either. A lot of opponents have been able to impose their game at their grounds recently. Which is bad news for us since we usually have to dominate. The two Champions League titles we won in this decade were back when we were realistically head and shoulders above the rest. Teams like Real and Liverpool thrive in tight, dramatic situations, which is how they won their recent titles. Manchester United in the past as well... We want to avoid that, which makes it a lot more difficult considering the strong competition at the top.

I guess Ole should give the kids as many chances as possible now, you don't have much to work with anyway. Maybe go for the Europa League... After Sevilla nobody stands out there.

I can handle bad results all day long, my anger is directed at how slow and predictable our plays are. Hard to get hypes even after some wins because they don't change much. That's what really exhausts me during and after our games. To make it worse it's Liverpool and City who are enjoying themselves now the most.

Yeah, I'm still happy about the defensive signings and believe my own phase talk. Still doesn't mean Ole can go on and fall way behind. ''Your midfield is competing with Norwich and Sheffield United, mate. Wolves are clearly a step above.'' Can't argue with that

But then just losing 2-1 to Palace is ball busting. Especially when you get late goal to make it 1-1, and then preparing to be a little more happy than you were, despite being unhappy at the result. Then Palace score again. lol Nooooooo.

Was hoping for 7 points at worst at this point. :/

Real Madrid only managed a draw in their first home game of the season against Valladolid. Benzema scored a beautiful goal with less than ten minutes left but the guests worked a nice quick move in the 89th minute, finished off by... Guardiola. :D

First home game for us tomorrow as well, and a chance to bounce back from the opening day defeat. Due to Suarez's and Dembele's injuries, as well as Messi being a doubt, several academy players were called, while Rafinha is also expected to join Griezmann in attack.

Whatever the selection, really looking forward to it. Competitive football returns to Camp Nou after over three months, it's been a long wait. Time to react... :)

Could be worse, could be Milan. They didn't manage one shot on target against Udinese. They lost 1-0

I misspoke earlier. Ansu Fati became the second youngest player to play for Barcelona.

The 16-year-old replaced Carles Perez after 78 minutes to write his name into the history books, coming behind only Vicente Martinez, who was 18 days younger than Fati when he played for Barcelona in 1941.

No Messi, Suarez or Dembele last night, but Barcelona won 5-2 over Betis, equalizing just before halftime and then responding with another four. Most of those who played that game took their opportunities in a 5-2 victory over Real Betis.

Our B team winger Carles Perez was lively and crowned his performance with a nice goal, getting away from his marker with one touch and scoring with the next one into the low corner, just outside the penalty area. Rafinha had another good showing and it would be a shame to lose him. De Jong was the most composed of midfielders. Vidal came off the bench and minutes later finished a quick counter attack move with the most precise of finishes into the very corner.

Pique made his 500th Barcelona appearance. However it's little Anssumane Fati who will never forget this game. Brought on for Perez with a little over 10 minutes left, at only 16 years of age, he became the youngest player to feature for Barcelona since 1941. And he showed no fear, taking players on like he's been there before...

Predictably, the defense wasn't praiseworthy. Couldn't have done anything with Loren's goal, long range rocket that happens. The first one was poor. Loren split it wide open and their new signing Fekir easily finished the move. And it's far easier to threaten our goal these days. That part of the squad is the reason I don't trust this team anymore. You can get away with a bad day in La Liga, but what if Leo and the rest in attack have an average day in Europe?

The one who has made headlines is Griezmann, who scored a brace and assisted on his Camp Nou debut. First time finish from Roberto's chipped ball for the equalizer, and then bending it into the far corner just outside the area for the lead. Kind of Suarez-like and Messi-like goals, fittingly in their absence. He said if he has to say sorry, he will do it on the pitch. This is nowhere close yet, but it's a good start.

May the floodgates open.

Bury have been expelled by the English Football League after a takeover bid from C&N Sporting Risk collapsed.

The League One club had been given until 17:00 BST on Tuesday to complete the deal, having been granted an extension to Friday's initial deadline.

Bury are the first team to drop out of the EFL since Maidstone's liquidation in 1992.

Alexis Sanchez completes loan move to Inter.

--------------

Bolton have 14 days to find a buyer or prove they have the funds to complete the season, or they will be expelled from the English Football League.

The EFL suspended the withdrawal notice while Bolton, in administration since May, negotiated a proposed takeover by Football Ventures (Whites) Limited.

It appeared the sale collapsed on Saturday, with administrators saying the club was close to liquidation.

I find the situation with Bury to be quite heartbreaking. The football fan part of me wonders which team the fans will now support. :( Things like this can ruin life. Expelled from the league after 125 years.

Bury captain Neil Danns delivered a strong message to owner Steve Dale yesterday.
''I would say look what you’ve done. This should never have happened. If you thought you could not move this club forward in a positive way you should never have taken over because you’ve literally destroyed lives, because that’s what this football club meant to so many fans. When you see the devastation of the fans I just think I have to say something. It’s unbelievable. I still can’t believe it. We have been in as normal, training. I don’t think anyone really believed that this was going to happen. We were just preparing every single week as though the next game was going to be on, the next game was going to be on. For it to happen so suddenly, it’s still really unbelievable. For a club with so much history and that has added so much to the league, for it to just be gone like that is just unimaginable.”

Danns was captain of the side that won promotion from League Two last season.
''I’ve come to have a special bond with the fans and created some amazing memories, especially last year. At this moment in time I just feel for them the most because you have got people who have been going to the game for years. It’s like every story, you go to the game with your Grandad, your Mum, your Dad, your brothers, it’s such a community. It means so much to people. For me, it’s starting to hit me harder because I have got young sons myself. I know what it is like to take them to watch my boyhood team Liverpool and the bond that gives us. To see that taken away from future fans is just devastating. Football brings not just football on the pitch but it is so much more than that. This whole situation just does not feel real.”

Absolutely heartbreaking. :(

Bolton will not suffer the same fate as Bury. Their takeover has been completed. The latest news says Bury now have a consortium that can prove they have funds. etc Maybe this will have a happy ending.

About time to go back to talking about United. Luke Shaw being out for five weeks means the time might be coming for ''the next Dennis Irwin'' Brandon Williams. Ole did say he would be hoping that Williams will provide stiff competition for Shaw. Hope to see him in on Saturday. Can't help but think it will be Ashley Young out there instead.

Red Star have qualified for the Champions League for a second season in a row, once again after going through all four qualifying rounds, and will face Bayern, Tottenham and Olympiacos in the group stages.

Less difficult than the absolute group of death that had Liverpool, PSG and Napoli last season, where we still managed to earn 4 points. Although at one point when I saw Barca, Dortmund and Inter waiting for the fourth opponent, I could have totally seen Sneijder and Cech drawing us with them.

Group A: Sevilla, Apoel Nicosia, Qarabag, F91 Dudelange

Group B: Dynamo Kiev, FC Copenhagen, Malmo, Lugano

Group C: Basel, Krasnodar, Getafe, Trabzonspor

Feeling a bit annoyed because of the chance there could have been to go and see United play in the Europa League. It doesn't take long to get to Windsor. Feel more sorry for the Linfield men because I do know a few hardcores. Seeing a club from here back in Europe like the ''old days,'' Haven't made the first round since Glenavon in 1996, Linfield made it in 1995. Awk well, blue men.

If you told me a few years ago that Red Star Belgrade (my local team) would play in the Champions League in 2019 while Manchester United wouldn't, I would have just laughed. But that's reality now. :D

To make it more interesting, Manchester United were drawn with Red Star's eternal rivals Partizan in the group stages. I have never had an opportunity this big to watch United. Unfortunately Red Star won't be playing a home game on the same week but this autumn is a great opportunity to watch both of my favorite teams for the first time, and on the European stages as well...
