#1

He would have to break a leg or something to lose the #1 spot. And since a broken leg heals in about two months, he would have to break another leg after that, so that he would be out for about half a year to lose enough points.

Not hoping however that this would happen. Love to watch Federer play tennis, but recently he's making so much unforced errors.

Nadal could get to number 1 in the race if he wins all the clay court tournaments as he usually does. But after that, Federer is likely to overtake him.

In order to Nadal take the #1 spot from Fed, he needs the swiss to be beaten in the early rounds of FO, Wimby AND the USO, and Nadal should make it to the SF or best in all of them. And of course, for Federer to lose earlier on the clay MS wouldn't hurt Nadal's chances though :p

Actually no. If you look at the race, Nadal and Federer are about 90 points apart, which equals what, 500 points? So, if they repeat their performances of clay last year, Nadal will be ahead in the race but still about 2000 points below Federer in the Entry Rankings. That might look like a lot, but the truth is Nadal just has to do a little better than Federer from Wimbledon to the Masters Cup to take over the No. 1 ranking. It's easier said than done, of course. Nadal will likely not to be upto the task. But with Federer going out early in the PLO and Miami, it looks possible.

Losing first round of Wimby, FO and USO, and one clay MS, like, I don't know, Montecarlo, while Nadal performing the same he did last year, will be enough for Fed to lose around 3500 ranking points, so Nadal will have like an 800 points lead.

Of course, that's NOT going to happen anytime soon :D

Well, if Nadal somehow wins 2 slams, the race will be very close.
But that's far away from now... Nadal should defend French first...

Even if Roger Federer lets me play in his place, He's still gonna have the #1 ranking until at least wimbledon, he'd probably lose it during the USO series or the USO itself if rafa wins it.

It looks like Djokovic has a good shot at passing Federer in the race soon(I know the race is utimately meaningless, but for the last 3 years Fed has been so far in front at this time of year in that as well, so I was shocked when I saw this)

Year to date:
Federer 276 points
Djokovic 272 points

No that's not what I am saying. Let's say, they do a repeat of last year's clay season. Nadal goes to number in the race. After that, he just has to get more points than Federer from WImbledon til the Masters Cup. So if Federer makes the semi at Wimbledon, final at US Open, wins Canada, makes the semis at TMC, and Nadal just does a little better at gaining points (not relative to last year) at those events then he takes over the year-end number one ranking.

I expect Nadal to win Montecarlo, Rome and FO, but not Fed to reach all those finals. It's just my guess ;)

Which is moot since Nadal doesnt have a prayer in hell of winning either Wimbledon or the U.S Open. The most he could possibly win is winning the French again, which he might or might not.

Yeah and Nadal is going to do better then Federer after the French Open, with only fast court events left, ROTFL! Get out of dreamland moron.

Since you seem to be a high school drop-out, I'll try to make it clearer: I 'm talking about a hy-po-the-ti-cal situation. Sorry, I mean, a what-if scenario. I hope that helps.

I think it's going to be tougher for Federer and Nadal to defend
their slam titles this year.

So true...I mean, so far, Federer had a bear of a time defending his AO title. It was brutal...he lost...how many sets? Oh, wait...

The rankings at the end of the year depends on this years performance, not last years. So right now in 2007

Fed - 276
Djojko - 272
Murray - 212
Roddick - 210
Nadal - 205
This is ATP race points . multiplied by 5 times will give ATP ranking points

I think Fed will remain #1 because one has to perform all round to beat him. Though at this moment, it's all open field.

Isn't there the Race Rankings, and the Rankings (the real stuff)

Race Rankings would be like:
Federer
Djokovic
Nadal
and so on

but the Rankings would be:
Federer
Nadal
Roddick
and so on

And I'm pretty sure Fed is steer clear in the Rankings.

I think FO plays a huge role on the rest of the season. If fed wins the tournament I bet he would have almost 9000points in the end of the season LOL dunno if thats possible but the point being he would have a huge motivation burst for the rest of the season.

If he doesnt win is he going to get frustrated? He talked about FO allready in the beginning of the season so its obvious he wants to win it. Maybe this is the reason for Federers poor performance this year(AO not included), hes putting all motivation for Roland Garros. I havent seen the same federer I saw last year.

I cant wait for Monte Carlo to begin. I know many is expecting for the Nadal-Federer matches but is there anyone who could ruin this plan? Canas or Djokovich? I REALLY HOPE that the Monte Carlo organizers will arrange Canas in the same half of the draw where Federer is

Like a few people have said, it's going to be a lot tougher for FED & NADAL this year compared to last year. Hence, I expect the rankings to be a lot closer than it was last year (so no 9000pts for FED).

Nope. He already lost early in two tournies he always wins, Indian Wells and Miami, and he has to defend FINAL on FO, not some crappy 3rd round.
No 9000 this year unless he wins MonteCarlo, Roma, Hamburg and Cincinatti... and of course, Roland Garros.

I think Fed will still be number 1 by the end of the year but the difference from Nadal will be smaller than it is now.

The rankings might be:

Federer
Nadal
Djokovic
Roddick

though...Djokovic might reach rank3 if he keeps on playing with this sort of motives he has had since Miami MAster series... no :p ?

One more on my list of idiots.
And whats wrong with the idea of canas facing federer in monte carlo? 3rd masters in a row where they face each other, nr.1 have lost allready twice so wouldnt it be really intresting to see what happens next? I think you are the friggin idiot but hey I think you know that too ;)

And the comment of Federer having 9000points, I just made a point that if Federer would win FO he would have huge motivation to do well in the rest of the season. So that could make him win a lot of tournaments...I did write that it might not be possible to reach 9000point!

There's quickening going on in the maturing process of new generation
players since AO. And when new generation matures, there will be this
domino effect.

Anyway, if it happens, this type of things happens in a hurry.
I think Roger's win of AO this year will be recorded as the easiest
slam win his career...

If this happens Nadal has even more to worry about then Federer. Nadal should not be regarded as a 20 year old really, he is a 20 year old with a 25 year old body in terms of wear already. In tennis terms he is already as old as Federer, and aging faster as we speak. In tennis terms he is much older with much less improvement left then all of Gasquet, Djokovic, Murray, and Berdych.

If these young guns mature as you are saying they will Federer's dominance might be lessened a bit, but he will still wins slams and probably be #1, just a less dominant #1. Nadal on the other hand, if this happens, will drop like a stone from the #2 spot, and see his clay court dominance ended quickly too
Nadal is the one far more vurnerable to losses from the remains of the tour then Federer, so if there are more players that are capable of challenging at the top level Nadal probably takes atleast 2 more losses for every 1 more loss Federer takes.

Yeah and I could say hypotheticaly if Andy Roddick dominates the clay court season he has a shot to end the year ranked #1 over Federer. Hypothetical is worthless if it is not realistic which Nadal doing better then Federer after the French Open is.

Nobody knows what's going to happen to Federer or Nadal at this time. Much speculation and wishful thinking.

I agree Nadal will also less dominate. Clay is very neutralizing surface by
nature and it's very hard to dominate for a long period.

But I'm not sure which is more secure. Federer on faster courts or Nadal on
clay ?

Yeah but his future time at #1 will be shorter than the time he has been #1.

You can think that if you want. I think it will be about the same time. He has been #1 for barely over 3 years. I think he will probably lose #1 for the first time in awhile in just over 3 years.

Federer right now is used to being 2000-4000 points ahead of 2nd place in the rankings. That is the kind of gap and superiority on the rest that wont dissapear overnight. It will take several years of closing the gap and lessened dominance before somebody else is #1. Nadal is the closest but he is already showing signs of early burnout, and he wont be the one to be the future #1 especialy with only 1 Masters event on clay starting next year. Djokovic and Murray are the two potential future #1s IMO but it will take several years of constant improvement, constant closing of the gap, to reach Federer. I know you prefer Baghdatis and Gasquet for the future to Djokovic and Murray, but the same would apply to them in that case.
