Women’s tennis is more exciting than men’s tennis now

Four different slam winners this year. Two of them beating Serena Williams in finals. New faces like Bianca Andreescu, Coco Gauff, Taylor Townsend. Going into a slam not sure who will win. It’s exciting. On the men’s side you had two of the Big Three winning all 4 slams this year. Last time someone not named Federer, Nadal or Djokovic won a slam was 2016. Guys like Tsitsipas, Khachanov, Bautista Agut, Thiem losing in the first round of the US Open. Zverev completely underperforming (his masters 1000s record this year is 6-7) and looking like he may never win a slam. ATP should be very worried. When the Big Three are gone who’s going to watch?

Sorry but the big three’s ongoing battle for GOAT status which could reach it’s conclusion is a far compelling narrative.

Yes different women are winning slams but none are being consistent or sustaining their momentum. We could have the same scenario as the men’s game in the late 90s with random winners and the #1 ranking changing every week. This gives the top of the game less validity as anybody can win a slam.

What is needed is an elite group of winners like before with the Williams sisters, Davemport, Henin, Cijsters, Hingis etc That was an era of competition at a high level. What we have right now is musical chairs with an ageing GOAT who’s showing the most consistency at the slams. When the youngsters start sustaining and justifying the hype long term then we are in business.

Right now people are hooked to see if Rafa will finally surpass Roger next year and if Djoker will come storming back after his injury.

Men's tennis is what women's would look like with 3 Serena level talents, unfortunately they only have 1.

Alternatively...Women's tennis is what men's would look like if there were no Novak/Rafa. Roger would have at least 25 slams, I'd think, and be lacking in motivation to win more, just like Serena.

After a while though it gets boring to see the same people winning over and over and over and over again. What’s the point of even playing the slams when it’s known beforehand that either Nadal, Djokovic or Federer will win it? In golf you have the exciting McIlroy/Kopeka rivalry brewing yet each slam was won by a different player this year. Would you honestly say golf is boring because the same person didn’t win multiple slams? At least with women’s tennis right now the outcome isn’t known before the tournament starts.

Yes the consistency on the WTA is really epic as are their major finals. The men’s finals of Wimbledon and the US open have nothing on the equivalent women’s finals.

What? The Djokovic-Federer Wimbledon final was one of the most memorable matches of all time. While I enjoyed Halep playing in the zone and whipping Serena, that match wasn't nearly as comparable in excitement.

Why is it good that the same people are winning all the time? The best thing that could happen to men’s tennis right now is if somebody outside the big 3 steps up and starts challenging their dominance.

What's bizarre is that so many people complain that men's tennis is going to be in horrible shape after the Big 3 leave the game (meaning they will stop winning), but at the same time we get people saying that men's tennis is in horrible shape until the Big 3 stop winning. Well, it can't be both.

We can only hope this next generation will pan out unlike the "lost gens" of Dimitrov, Kei, Raonic, and so many others we swore would take over for the "Big 4" (at the time)! :sneaky:

Could not disagree more. The WTA is a joke now. Basically all the players play musical chairs with the slams and #1 ranking. As soon as you learn someone's name you never hear from them again. The GOAT of women's tennis has been making slam finals only to get embarassed by some kid no one has ever heard of. Hard pass from this guy.

Well both can be true! You just never know how things will pan out! I was hoping Fed would retire after his Wimbledon win in 2012! He went over 5 years without winning much of anything, though making major finals! He proved us all wrong storming back to take 3 more slammers! Unfortunately for him he's just postponing the inevitable; when he leaves, more than likely 2 people will pass him right by in record time! At least Sampras got 8+ years after supplanting Emerson! Fed may have to watch his record go up in flames by next year! That coupled with 2 players who've literally "owned" him for the most part, not sure how anyone can think of him as "The GOAT;" now or ever!

What you say may be true, but even though I've thought women's tennis a mess for years, it probably is more compelling for the average fan than the race for immortality by Fedalovic! It's been going on for years and nothing we've said has panned out; from a need to move on from Federer to Nadal breaking down and being forced out the game! No one thought Nole would be this close, but taking 4 of the last 6 majors has brought the trolls to a screeching halt! I'm one that would love for Fedal to finally be supplanted by the next generation, but it doesn't look too good! Med gave us hope, but we've seen it before with Thiem, Zverev, Kei, Raonic, Dimitrov, & others! :sneaky:

I disagree with this as well. The casual fans only know the big players names. That's part of the appeal to the Big 3, they attract the hardcore and casual fans. I'm all in on the Bullsheeet Russian though. He showed mental toughness the rest of he NEXTGEN players could dream about.

I agree but I also think it looks like Andreescu fills that bill on the women's side. I really can't see her being a flash unless she is fragile physically. She looks pretty stout.

I watch more WTA and than ATP.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the men's game but women's tennis is at a particularly compelling stage at the moment.

We have an ensemble cast of maybe 4-6 future ATGs competing at once while Serena is also trying to chase down the all time major record. There is a big storyline in every event at the moment and the quality of play and matchups is superlative.

WTA isnt all that bad nowadays but still nowhere near the golden days off Hingis Capriati Henin Clijsters Mauresmo Davenport.

Although the all court game of Ash Barty is reminiscent of Hingis, I still think the most exciting "tennis" right now is men's doubles.

Sure, if you're into GOAT races, mums having meltdowns or five hour slog-fests, they can be great .. but the best "tennis" at this present time is men's doubles.

I am enjoying the WTA more now then the ATP. I think Serena being pregnant breathed new life in the division now.
ATP is worse now it is boring and the Big Three still dominanting leads to very predictable outcomes.

I watch because of the best of five sets they battle through, the court side coaching (and use of comfort animals) between sets and the special, heavier ball used just to slow the baseline bashing....

Halep, Ash Barty, and Osaka haven't been near the top a short while now?
Lol somebody need to watch Wimbledon and us open final again
Good match if it leads to some new players getting inspired, otherwise there's a point of diminishing returns seeing some combination of either Federer, Nadal, or Djokovic. We've seen it all before, can just watch them playin' each other from their actual prime years.
