A bit of plow through, authority on the ball perhaps, less stability on volleys...

I’d like to extend this question to feel and overall performance. I only played with V1 TC95 (V2 TC97), but I’d hope that V3 “D” beam Angells are not too far off from previous generations.

V3 has better feel (a bit more solid) comparing to V2. And less or more consistent SW in terms of performance. I prefer V3.

V3 feels more consistent in feeling than the V2. I have a friend that has his TC100 V2 that he bought from a fellow TT member and i felt slighly disconnected from my shots.

I slapped on Luxilion Gut on my TC95 V3 and boy it spoiled me so hard that it became the best racket setup of all time. (out performs my budget set up of Gosen OG Sheep Mico in the mains, which only last a week)

I also think the V3 feels and performs more consistently, but I'm probably persuaded by the string pattern change as well, from V2 16x19 to V3 18x20. Do you hit the TC95? What do you cross the Gosen with?

But I'm with you. I had Klip Gut/V-Star crosses in my TC95 18x20s and it lasted forever. I'm currently just starting to experiment with poly/poly hybrids. I was a long-time Cyclone user, so debating on Cyclone 18 mains/V-Star 18 or Polyfibre Hightec 18 crosses. That said, I bet a Polyfibre/V-Star hybrid would work great (both soft polys). And topspn gave me a pack of Tier One Black Knight 18 that I haven't tried yet either, lol. I'm turning into a stringaholic.

Greetings,

My first post here, so hi to all :)

I want to order Angell V3 TC97 with 18x20 string pattern, and 310gr or 320gr (still considering my options), and with leather grip.
What is the approximate swing weight I can expect?

my TC97 V3 300gr and 32,5cm BP has an unstrung SW of 304... does this help?

I can just assume that 310gr or even 320gr version would have higher SW? Sorry for guessing, but I'm a racket noob :D

And yes, it sure helps. Thanks for the help.

I use Pros Pro Black for the cross to keep the cost down to roughly $1 a string job. The setup is good for a good couple of hours until it either gets stiff or loosen tension to the point I try to break it. I'm still debating if I want to stay with Natural gut as I get fussed about tension maintenance being crap, at the same time dont want to dish out the money to buy Natural gut. I will have to see how long Lux gut will last until they break or go too loose where I cant control my shots.

Gut/poly is probably the most durable and best value I've found long term. I string my own racquets, so that definitely helps. I've always strung the gut a little too loose for the long haul, so the string bed usually gets a little jumpy, but man does it hold its tension. Next time, I might string the gut in the low-mid 50s. My biggest issue with gut/poly is that I eventually feel like I start losing dwell time (when the poly dies--even though it's still very playable). Just a fraction more dwell time gives me a lot of confidence, so I like hybrids with a softer string in the crosses. If I ever have money to burn (yeah right), I might splurge for poly/gut, but until then, I'm gonna try to find a poly/soft poly combo -- or go back to poly/Gosen.

I play at a much higher tension around 60ibs (10% prestrech) in the mains and 58ibs in the crosses. So far, they played pretty much the same as they come out of the machine.

@Classic-TXP-IG MID, fantastic comparison between TC95 and TC97. Seems very coherent with other users' experiences. Do you feel the ASL2 has the potential to be close to this true "Goldielocks" racket, based on specs and comparsions that topspn has shared?

ASL2 has the same string spacing of TC95 and grommets fit. Launch angle is on par with TC95 I would say. As you’d expect, precision is somewhere between TC95 and TC100

The post above is straight from @topspn and he would know, as I have never tried the ASL2... Hope that helped.

I wouldn't expect much drop off at that tension. If you do experience a decrease in performance, I'd venture the crosses are to blame. I play 18x20s, so that tension would be like a board. I think 52/49--55/52 (gut/poly) in my frames would achieve all I could hope for.

As much I wanted to retain my Gut Mains and want to string the crosses only, theres a lot of people that would say no to that as it wont play the same after you string it.

Probably true. But you're gonna get at least 15 hours, possibly 20-25 hours, of excellent playability out of each string bed. If you can afford it, it's hard to beat. Now that I brought it up a few posts back, I'm gonna have to try the gut in the crosses just once. By the time they break with a soft poly main, I'd probably want to restring anyway.

You could also get lots of playing hours from the crossfire hybrid. Kevlar mains and ZX crosses with a big tension differential. If you like the feel

Yep, but is is easy doable and this knot will not affect playability. No worries.

I switched to Yonex Tour G 330 in April 2018...feel and better accuracy were main reasons for that. Serves, power and topspin are easier to access with TC100, but in absolute numbers, there’s not too much between the two. If TC100 is Thor’s hammer, Tour G is a laser cannon (if you can swing it). I was able to do 1 hour of high intensity drills (20-30 min warm up before that) and then 2-3 sets of match play with only slight decrease in racquet head speed and overall shot quality.

When I moved away from home in October 2018, I took my main Tour G and two TC100s with me. I was expecting I wouldn’t play as much as back home but, because of work and other stuff, I ended up playing 3-4 times in total between October 2018 and the end of June 2019. I used Tour G because I wanted to have at least some continuity and a friend of mine used one of the 100s. It was more of a messing around than proper tennis anyway, a bit of work out before heading out for beers (what else would you do in Prague...).

I went back home for two months at the end June ‘19 with my regular tennis gear back at my rental flat in Prague. I have some Tour Gs back home but I quickly realized I’m not anywhere near to my tennis level from summer 2018. I needed some help from my racquet until I got better and TC100 would have been my obvious first choice but it was 700km away. Apart from Tour Gs and some classic midsize frames, I had either DR98 or my old tweener frame to choose from. I remembered Chris from TW and his experiment - he tailweighted a super light tweener frame with excellent results so I went that way. I’ve added some 40g to a 280g stock tweener - heat shrink sleeve to up the gripsize, lead at both ends, leather replacement grip...I managed to build a very interesting racquet indeed, kind of like my personal Aero Pro Drive. Plays really decent but it forced me to re-think and rebuild my tennis a bit. It doesn’t have precision and power of Tour G so I was forced to hit bigger targets and construct points more carefully instead of forcing the issue or going for winners too soon.

I learned a lot and developed my game quite nicely but after those two months of compromising, I’m really looking forward to hitting with TC100 again as I will have much more time for tennis from now on. Tour G is still my main aspiration but TC100 is a machine of a frame and the most reliable servant. I’ll experiment with either 70RA TC95 or ASL 2 to see if I can create something with more accuracy than TC100 and more polarized/whippy action than Tour G while keeping the good stuff. I haven’t bought any tennis racquet for some two years now and I’m curious how Angell frames are evolving. TC100, however, will always be my match-play standard by which other frames are measured.

Hey @joohan, what strings do you find suits best on your tc100? I'm still playing around with string setups for my TC100s (16/19, 27.5 inches @ 330 SW). I play a relatively heavy topspin game. Currently have RS Lyon 1.25 but not finding much joy. Didn't enjoy rpm, head hawk touch was nice but way too expensive.

Currently thinking Hyper G or Ice code to try next. Tour bite was my go to in my previous racquet (DR 98+) but didn't like how unpredictable it got over time.

Any recommendations? Cheers

Hi,

I’m afraid I won’t be of much help here. I like softer round polys and RS Lyon, along with WeissCannon Silverstring and Scorpion are my golden standards. I have Kirschbaum Pro Line II 1.25 in my DR98 and TC90 but I’ve never tried it in 63RA Angells because I thought that combination of softer uniform flex and softer poly might result in trampoline effect.

If I were to suggest anything...Yonex Poly Tour Spin might be worth a try as well as WeissCannon Scorpion. Silverstring is quite similar to RS Lyon.

That’s all I have. Not too much savvy about latest poly strings...

Interesting note about soft poly on the 63 RA. I've found the RS Lyon to feel extremely boardy on my 63 RA TC100, not trampoliney at all. In fact, I have the isospeed baseline spin on my 70RA and that felt like a rocket launcher.

I may have to give poly tour spin a go - you're referring to the blue string, not the red (PTS-g) I would assume?

Carreau

Lyon should not feel boardy, unless it was dead already or was strung high.
Blue spin version is quite stiff and feels a bit cheap IMO.

Weird thing is plays better sitting for two three weeks after stringing. A bit like @dgoran with his typhoon

Yes, the blue one. I find it’s quite a good fit for softer frames with higher SW. Tones the power down a bit.

I've got my Lyon strung at 45/43, so not high by any means.

Boardy may not be the right word - that would suggest a harsh string bed; when in fact Lyon is quite the opposite. It's very comfortable.

Perhaps it's the lack of feel/response that I'm trying to describe. Muted maybe? The polar opposite would be something like RPM where I can feel the strings dig into the ball (a sensation I rather like), whereas on Lyon the dwell time feels a lot shorter. Again, just my personal experience.

Maybe I've become too used with shaped polys and have forgotten what round polys feel like. I gotta say though, the more I play with Lyon, the more I'm liking how predictable this string is - something I never get with shaped polys. Its also keeping tension amazingly well.

Finally got to hit with my TC95 63RA 18x20 (330g, 305mm balance - then modified with weight at 3,9, and 12 o'clock (2.5g, 2.5g, and 1g); 2 overgrips (as it's a grip size 3 - one with no overlap and the 2nd normal, and 5g (I think) at 7" above the butt cap). The racquet is strung with MSV Co-Focus 1.18mm @ 48/45. I'm right-handed and have a OHBH.

Glorious... in one word. I haven't tried serving yet, as I'm working myself back into fitness after rehab from 2 procedures, but all the other strokes were smooth and easily executed. The amount of spin and loop to my shots was like a volume knob instead of an on/off switch (to use Mark's phrase from TW), and all that had to be adjusted was the angle of approach to the ball at contact (and of course the change from a mild semi-western to a full semi-western grip).

Backhand topspin was not an issue, and the BH slice was low with plenty of skid and court penetration (dirty slice as Chris from TW would call it). I could also easily gauge the amount of side-spin I wanted to add to the slice on my down-the-line slices to right-handed players to take them further out-of-court (or on drop shots to the FH side).

It was my first outing with the 18x20 version of the TC95, so I anticipate things will only get better. All that remains is to compare the 18x20 with my 16x19 (with a much thicker gauge of the same string) to see which one I like better.

Nice review! I know you've hit with the tfight LTD a good bit in the past - how do you compare that and the tc95? Tc more power and comfort? Also sounds like your final weight was pretty hefty on this!

Thanks :)

I am going to play the TFight DC 315 LTD 18x20 side-by-side with the TC95 18x20 in the next few days, so I can let you know. The TC95 would be more powerful from the start as it has a higher static weight and SW as standard. Both racquets are modified, but the TC95 is still the heavier one when it comes to static weight and probably the SW, however, its balance would also be more HL. Time will tell. What I do know is that the way the TC95 flexes is very addictive. For that reason alone, it will be staying in my bag.

The TFight DC 315 LTD has stiff competition from my 2013 TFight 315 Limited 18x20. I am yet to decide which one I like more (due to my prolonged rehab and absence from the tennis courts in the last 10 months or so).

Since I purchased my TC95 18x20s from a wonderful TT member (@Purist), the starting specs were 330g/305mm balance (which is similar to my TC97 18x20 - 330g/ 310mm balance). I would have preferred a slightly lower static weight to start with, but the racquets were in such a wonderful condition, so I bought them. Should the weight be too much in the long run, I will take off a bit at 3 and 9 o'clock. However, at this time, the racquet is still quite maneuverable and very stable so I will leave it as is. Two things will happen, I will either be able to heck it or not. It will not be hard to take bits of Tungsten tape off the racquet head. The double overgrip is needed due to the grip being size 3 and I need size 4 (but like getting 3 and then adding the two overgrips).

I'll keep you posted with further thoughts and happenings :giggle:

First league match with ASL2. Played poorly and got destroyed, but racket was wonderful as was Black Knight. Really easy to swing, great on contact. Really every shot I needed (flat/spin groundstrokes, volleys, lobs) was accessible, I just needed to have played more than once in the past several weeks. Overall, first impression very good.

Okay, now it make sense. :)
Personally, I was not able to hit effectively with Lyon. Silverstring, Scorpion and SPPP are better IMHO. However, it is very personal, we feel things differently.

Also anyone know if there are any upcoming discounts on rackets at Angell?

So with 63RA extended length, the racket will feel really heavy and with 70RA it will feel lighter. Forgive me for my ignorance but why is that? Thanks

Depends on what weight you are used to. In xl frames I love at least 5 or 6 points strung balance to make it more whippier. The higher sw the harder it can be depending on level to swing. Good modern technique and relaxed swing is required with higher sw. Tc100 70ra you can get lower sw frames but the feel is very similar to 63ra anyway. 65ra or so strung with foam is great.
To me all angell frames play a bit heavier due to the foam filling. If you know specs you like it is much easier

True, I play with a Yonex Ezone DR98 extended length with 8g of lead tape on 3 and 9 o clock. Mainly hit flat shots and lots of volleying so aiming for a bit lighted racket so maybe I will go for 70RA. I also have elbow issues so would this be comfortable still.

I have tried the 70ra standard length and it is very arm friendly. The 63ra is a volley king. But 70ra not too far off. I also used ai/dr 98 for a while. Plenty of good strings out there too

Does anyone have problem generating power if hits are off-center / out of sweet spot a little? I've been playing with the the TC100, up around 350g, 31.cm balance and I feel like if I connect on the outer edges of the frame (yes, I know, don't hit it there hahah), I get no help, like it feels stiff almost. Coming from my Tour 95 where i could snap it on the reach and it'd feel solid, this feels a bit dead. Maybe I'm also having trouble making the 95 to 100sq in adjustment? lol

It could also be the strings which I'm still testing....just curious though. Obviosuly when I hit dead on it's amazing, beautiful power and feel.

So far comfort is very good. I switched to TC95 from 2016 pure strike due to TE. ASL2 after 1 session equally as comfy as TC95, which is itself also very comfy.

I've heard so many people switch from the Pure Strike because of TE. At my club I won't let them string above 50 for fear of problems and it seems to have helped (for the time being)

Yeah I play control oriented polys mainly, never above 50. TE onset was very insidious with PS, as I played with it for over a year with no issues. But a blessing in disguise since I wouldn’t have stumbled onto this forum without said TE. So really I should thank Babolat I suppose...

Do you, guys, use recent batches? Maybe it is production/batch specific or smth. When was your sticks produced/delivered?

I have never had any issues with consistency and sweet zone with all my versions of TC100. However, softer, thinner string might help with it + proportional stringing method is worth to consider as well.
