Nadal skips Shanghai

Djokovic has to play all year round to hold on to his #1 ranking but he's got his recovery egg so he can just keep going.

If he plays in Bercy and London, which I think he will, with an additional 1000 or 1200 points would be enough for him to end the season as world number 1.
Djokovic is pretty much a lock to win the titles in Tokyo and Shanghai. So even in Nadal will play Paris (which I highly doubt) he will have a very small lead in the race. Add the fact that indoors is Nadal's worst surface and Djokovic's best surface...

With a shoulder in the process of recovery, it is impossible for Djokovic to win everything you think the Serbian will achieve in the remainder of the season.

Djoker still has to be pretty much perfect the rest of the year to finish number one. Win Shanghai, and at least make the finals at Paris and WTF; not exactly the easiest task to replicate for a 32 year old. Any win Nadal gets at Bercy and WTF will add to his ranking total as well so this race is still anyone’s game although as I’ve said before, it’s not a wise move for either player to go 100% towards it.

Because in the last few years that number 1 spot turned into a total joke. Djokovic can lose in slam fourth rounds and still stay at this spot because there is nobody to take it from him. Even when one guy got a chance this year he decided that he doesn't want it, and prefers to gift Djokovic another YE#1.
Nadal lost first round of a slam in 2013 and ended the year #1

Did Fed and Med skip Shanghai too?

Ok, dude. Nadal in 2013 won 10 titles, including 2 slams and 5 masters tournaments. He played almost everything after AO, and in Wimbledon it was his only early loss that year. Djokovic in 2019 isn't exactly on the same level. (not like Nadal is, I'm just disappointed that he doesn't even want to try, he just gave up)

Congratulations to Djokovic on a sixth YE#1. I really have no idea when he will lose the number 1 spot, probably not before 2022 given the current competition.

Well, it was Nadal's decision to gift him the YE#1 without even trying to fight for it. I guess we have to respect that decision, as terrible as it is.
YE#1 only becomes relevant if 2 players have the same number of slams :)

Rafa should only play when he is 100% fit and committed not because he's forced to. He has earned his stripes and the luxury of not having to play mandatory tournaments if he doesn't want to.

A smart move by Nadal.
I think Novak's fall schedule is a bit risky. The Big 3 should all just play AO to USO, and maybe show up only for the WTF after that.
Too many matches for Nole until December. Really risky.

I completely agree. Nadal’s 2013 has definitely been stronger than Djoker’s 2019. My point is, an early slam loss doesn’t mean someone doesn’t deserve YE #1. That being said, Nadal can still end the year #1, it’s just not nearly as likely as it was after USO.

You also said that Rafa would lose the USO final...

What makes me angry is that we see so many motivation from Federer and Djokovic. They are ready to die for their tennis records. With Nadal it's the other way around, he just doesn't care about tennis anymore. He skips tournaments one after another. In 2018 he played 9 tournaments during the year and ended up withdrawing during two of them. This year it's pretty much the same story again. Watch him withdraw from Paris and WTF. I totally expect it.

I wonder why you are writing sooo many crap about Rafa.

Try what, Nadal will be better by resting, he played too much already after Wimbledon.

I did not expect Rafa to play Shanghai anyway. He almost said as much that he would play LC and one more tournament before the WTF. Can't remember when he said it, but it stuck in my head.

Rafa hosted the Spanish media in Manacor on Sept. 10 to speak about his schedule for the rest of the season. He said that
- he's unsure about playing in Shanghai;
- he's going to play in Paris;
- he has qualified for the ATP Finals that is a mandatory event;
- he has promised to play Davis Cup (after the ATP Finals).

Rafa always thought the season was too long, now that he doesn't have to play mandatory tournaments he can cut down.

The season should end after the USO. The Asian swing and the indoor tournaments are unnecessary. The WTF should be at the end of September with no ranking points and no prize money, just appearance fees. The players need to get a life.

Isn't this old news? I thought Nadal was planning on skipping the Asian swing because of his honeymoon?

To be honest, nothing is surprising here. 99% that Nadal will skip Paris and WTF as well. I called it when he withdrew from Laver Cup.
You always call it wrong where Rafa is concerned. Look at your response to this post:

This so unbelievably similar to the AO 18 final.

Rafa faced with a dicey hold game to start the 5th after choking the 4th, just like Roger.

With the difference being that Federer won the match...Nadal will not. Today his career will end...

Nadal seems to do well after long breaks, maybe taking the rest of the year off and coming out of the blocks hot for the AO would be his best move.

Why on Earth he played at the Laver Cup I don't know. It doesn't award ATP points am I right? If he was going to play anything post US Open I would have thought Shanghai would have been his best bet. It's the biggest outdoor hardcourt event post US Open, it's long enough after the US Open that he can be well rested for it and long enough before the AO that he can be rested for that as well. Had he played Shanghai there is also a good chance that he could have taken number 1.

It all depends on what his priorities are. He says he is not chasing the number 1 ranking he just wants to be happy playing. He loves Laver Cup and he was happy playing it but playing Shanghai wouldn't make him happy.

Rafa played the Laver Cup because he deserves to have some fun in his tennis life.

You believe that losses do not delight Nadal?

If that were the case, would he have taken L's in six of his last seven matches against Federer?

Tennis players are so soft now a days.

Masters = nothing in todays game because top players dont have to play them anymore.

They do but guys like Nadal have already played so many Masters matches in their career that they are now allowed to choose whether to play them or not.

The Spanish take their honeymoons before the wedding? Hitching date is October 19.

I think Nadal skips Paris because:

I can't find the original article, but I read some news back in January or February saying he was going to skip the Asian swing because of the honeymoon. The closest I could find was this:

Given that he is missing the Open 500 in Beijing, it could be likely that the 17-time Grand Slam winner could get married in September.

Smart. Rafa knows #1 means nothing but better physical health going into next year is key. Manage the rest of the season for reps is all he needs.

Nadal's about 2000 points up in the race.

The most points Novak can win from here is 4000 iinm..

The most points Nadal can win from here is 2500.

So Novak pretty much has to go into beast mode to take it. If he does, then he deserves it.

Kills the sport. Pro players have an obligation to play. To the fans, sponsors and directors.

I find the old man rule discriminatory. If one player has to play a masters, they all have to play a masters.

The tour is in really bad shape, needs new leadership

LOL the guy who literally gave his last ounce of energy to win the USO doesn't care about tennis.. We are lucky Nadal is still playing tennis at 33 let alone winning slams, yet some people can't stop moaning when he skips a meaningless masters

Federer skipped 3 clay court seasons because he cared so much and where were Federer and Djokovic in Canada?

Djokovic still needs to win tokyo and shanghai and after that hope nadal plays poorly in wtf and paris I still feel nadal should end as no 1 if he shows his consistency which he has shown through the year.

Guy won two slams and he is "gifted" the YE #1, ridiculous.

Nadal is making the right decision for himself. Maybe he actually knows there are more important things in life than tennis and records, unlike some people.
