Can we all just appreciate the irony that this Djokovic News megathread was created by "Rafabull?"

In all seriousness, thank you for your contribution to TTW, rafabull.
It is kinda weird though how this thread died in October 2011, until someone bumped it back up in February 2014. I guess during the time we were using the brethren thread started by FreeBird.
In fact, it is a connection of two threads. This thread was originally started by member @Maximagq in February 2014 as 'Djokovic news' (https://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/index.php?threads/djokovic-news.382236/post-8141268). Last year the 'Djokovic news' thread merged with the sunken thread from 2011, created by @rafabull under the name 'Djokovic News'. The reason for the merger both threads was obviously to put a large 'N' in the thread name, as they have of threads 'Federer News' or 'Nadal News'.

Right! I had a feeling it was a merger. I remember one thread made by a Djokovic fan, yea, it was Maximagq. No wonder something didn't look right when I saw the thread and it showed rafabull as the creator.

Beginning to feel Medvedev is now Novaks biggest rival. Fedal haven't defeated him in God knows how many years, off clay anyway..

Watched Cincinnati,s highlights again. Novak was just bossing him around for a set and half.Medvedev was just looking ragged. But I really don't know what happened to him after that, he suddenly turned into Goran Ivanasevic. Hitting ace after ace,if it's not an ace it was a service winner..Some of it was Novaks fault also, shouldn't have been broken so easily at the end of the second set and should have dragged it to the tie breaker..

If Novaks is not at his best,Medvedev beats him and at his best it's like 60-40 or 70-30 to Novak..I am eagerly looking forward to their rivalry.

I am still waiting for them to be drawn in opposite halves a little bit more often. 4th round of AO, quarters in Monte Carlo, were supposed to meet in Wimbledon and USO quarterfinal, then Cincy semis, now could face in Shanghai semi... Enough already LOL.

Watch them meet in round robin in London now. :D

I feel Federer and Nadal are still his biggest threat. You can't look past them. I'd say Medvedev comes just after them.

Novak at number 350, praises the Greek prior to the quarterfinal

Novak Djokovic achieved his 350th victory at Masters tournaments today with a win over John Isner.

The Serbian tennis player won 7-5 6-3 after a great display and qualified to the Shanghai quarterfinal, where he will face the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas for the third time.

Novak spoke about his rivals during the last few days in Shanghai, mostly Rafael Nadal with whom he is having a battle for the Year-End #1 ranking.

"Even though I was in this position many times before now, I know Rafa had an incredible year and that I must play well in order to have any chance of meeting him until the end of the season indoors", says Novak.

The tennis he showed against Shapovalov and especially Isner is encouraging as the Shanghai tournament approaches its finish.

"I am happy to play well again. For me the most important thing is to be healthy because as you know I was forced to retire from the US Open. That was very hard to accept. The shoulder reacted well after the break and I had a good tournament in Japan. I will need a few more weeks in order to heal one hundred percent. Even though I am playing without pain, I have to be careful", said Djokovic.

He is aware that new, young players who are a threat to the leading three are coming. When it comes to them he underlines his next opponent, Tsitsipas.

"Among those young players I would say that it's approximately equal quality, but a few of them have stood out. Tsitsipas, he has already settled among the top ten. But Auger-Aliassime, Shapovalov and Hurkacz can beat anyone on their day",
warned Novak.

Djokovic's return of serve has notably declined this year compared to the past. It's arguably the key to understanding his inconsistency in non-slam events.

Nothing explains his struggle against the best talent of the next generation than his less-than-ideal returning of serve in the last year. Medvedvev, Tsitsipas and Zverev are all tall players. In the last match in which each has defeated Djokovic, Djokovic didn't play poorly. It was the return of serve that let him down. He either couldn't read their serves or didn't return with enough depth, allowing them to hit a strong shot rather than engage in a neutral rally.

Having said that, Djokovic's career is one in which the more matches he plays against an opponent, the likelier he will gain the definitive advantage in the head-to-head race. It will be interesting to see if the consequence of playing these guys more and more causes him to adapt to their games and gain control of the rivalries. The question is, after doing all he can to get himself as good as Nadal and Federer, does he have the appetite to commit himself mentally and physically to staying with the best of the next generation as they enter their primes and he gets further and further away from his?

Djokovic will have 3 to 5 years of prime tennis left. He is fitter than Fedal and much thinner. So his wear and tear is much less. Plus his spiritual exercises and gluten free diet ensures he can last longer than Fedal.

Unfortunately this Next Gen have come to play unlike the "lost" one with Kei, Milos, and Grigor! Med, Sascha, & Perseus have nicked Nole in the last year or so! It's shocking each time because we're so accustomed to young players "choking" away a lead! Fedalovic are famous for holding their nerves and taking opportunities to save a match! These newbies are saying "screw that, I want this now!" :sneaky:

If some one think spirituality is the key to achieving success in sports , I would say something is very very very wrong in the way they watch and perceive the sport

I have just noticed it recently,in the BO3 matches,he goes full steam in the first set and just relaxes after that..It looks like a bad habbit, either he doesn't gives a 100% damn in these BO3 matches or what o don't know..90% of the tour is mentally scarred against Novak,so it cuts out against them but not against New Gen.Med and Tsipipas.

I know, when you have been winning whatever tournament you enter into, for minimum 3 years,2011,2015,2016,other half of 2018,it's difficult to mentally motivate to win another master but it has to be the responsibility of the coaching team to get him out of it..Vajda is more like a friend to him,I doubt he will directly oppose Novak in these matters..Why Becker was so good because he would directly say it upfront..Like after 2015 FO Final,he said Novak just wanted the Trophy to come to him than grabbing the control against Wawarinka...

What has to happen for him to end the year number 1?
Nadal leads by 1280 points right now in the race. That means Djokovic needs to gain 1300 more points than Nadal over the next 2 tournaments.

If we assume the best case for Djokovic, he wins the WTF (let's say with 1 loss for argument's sake). That nets him 1300 points, putting him at +20 compared to Nadal. Then Nadal just needs to win more points in Paris + WTF as Djokovic does in Paris (which is entirely doable).

If Nadal puts up a good performance in Paris, then Djokovic would need to go undefeated the rest of the year and Nadal couldn't be allowed to make the WTF final.

Is Nole back with that Spanish Voodoo guy?? He is playing like a ****in wimp again. .

He's playing to the level of his opponent unfortunately! This kid is dragging Djokovic down who needs to "get up" and stop making so many UFE's!

He is at the point where he turns it on only when he has to. Only guy on tour who can flip his game off and on when he chooses.

Let's hold our horses really..he has handed the initiative big time to Nadal and has lost some crucial matches to gen next while Fedal continue to eat them for breakfast...

Interesting facts:

  • Shapovalov is the jubilee 30th opponent of Djoker in the finals of the ATP singles tournaments. Good on Djokovic to keep the race alive. He was back to his own this week and demolished everyone in sight.

He wasn't fooling around from early on in the QF with Perseus and dispatched the Greek in less than an hour IIRC! Tsitsipas will have another chance at YEC! :sneaky:
