Prince Phantom 93P- Best string set up

I also have experimented many setups on my 93p(18x20), please allow me to share my experiences :)
It is quite(very?) hot on where I'm playing (Thailand), so strings go soft/stretch, dead and notched quick!

Full Bed Poly - I really like full bed poly setup on the 93p, my goto tension is at 46/44 with a 1.20mm string, I have also tried lower tensions, but they are not my cup of tea.
RS Lyon 1.20@46/44 - Great control, excellent durability, nice feel on shots, loved this setup.
RS Lyon 1.20@42/40 - Same as above, however, the string bed feels mushy, not my cup of tea.
Yonex Poly Tour Yellow 1.20@45 - Very nice feel, soft and plush, good at first 3 hours, after that the string feels too soft and too powerful for me.
Yonex Poly Tour Yellow 1.20@46/44 - Same as above with much better durability, goto setup for hitting on an easy day or with GF.
Solinco Tour Bite 1.20@45lbs - Good control and spin, harsh my arm/wrist on off-center hits, feel dead/shot sailing after 4 hours of play.
Solinco Tour Bite 1.20@46/44 - Same as above, DESTROYED my arm/wrist on off-center hits, better durability.
Solinco Tour Bite 1.20@42/40 - Good spin, no issue with my arm/wrist, too powerful for my game.
Solinco Tour Bite Soft 1.20@46/44 - Great spin, good control lasted around 6 hours before the string goes dead, does not like the feel of shaped poly.
Solinco Confidential 2.0 (Unleased String, hexagonal - Used by Sloane Stephens?) 1.20@46/44 - Plays very similar to RS Lyon, feels okay(better than TB soft), very low power, not so good durability.
Tourna Big Red 1.25@46/44 - Very boardy, unable to play with this setup, restring right away (Maybe too high tension for a 1.25 string?)

Hybrids - I only tried several Poly/Multi hybrid setups on my 93p, Natural Gut was a no-go for me, too humid here and they are quite expensive to get one here.
The only multi I put in the cross is Head Velocity Mlt 16g 1.30 (White), and the tension is always @46/50lbs - My thought on 16g on the cross is that it should increase the durability of the mains.
Mains locks up very well, great setup for flat shots, super control, okay spin, very low launch angle. Feels varies on the main poly and main poly always dead/stretched before the muti cross breaks.
Solinco Confidential 2.0 1.20 - Really like this setup, nice feel, better spin than other hybrid I have tried, however the mains dead really fast.
Luxilon ALU Power 1.25 - Good Durability, Great Control, Very Poor Spin.
Solinco Tour Bite 1.20 - Still destroying my arm on off-center hits.

Stringing service is quite cheap here(compared to what I have read from this board) - cost around USD 5 if you bring your own string, so this allows me to restring quite often:)

I have been thinking on my future setup - a stiff 1.25 poly mains and a soft 1.20 cross.
My thought on this is that to increase durability on poly setups; I get around 12 hours playability, despite the stringing cost, strings can be quite expensive here)
Maybe a Prince Diablo Prism + Yonex Poly Tour Yellow? A nice colourful setup:D
I'm actually going to get T1 Ghost Wire 1.10mm as a cross and hybrid with some shaped polys to try in my 18x20 93P. Waiting for shipment. Only downside is GW only comes in white.

Diablo Prism + PTP Yellow does sound good. Would black PTP provide better canvas for the Prism?

Tourna BHS felt pretty dead so I cut it out this morning in favor of Luxilon Ace. I played an hour of singles today alternating between it and my backup (still with KB PLII). Early impressions are positive — looking forward to reporting back with more!

A black main string looks pretty good with the white Ghostwire in the 93P. Salt and Pepper. Just like my hair.

Last night I played a topsy turvy doubles match that made plain to me that it’s time to move on from PLII. It was fun to use on its best days, but its playability duration was super strange; even last night it felt fine, but the control was nonexistent. As I was swinging, I had no idea where the ball was gonna go, which is not a fun feeling, and nothing like how PLII felt right off the stringer.

The good news is, I switched over to the 93P strung with Ace in time to turn things around and pick up a win. I like Ace, but it’s noticeably harsher than the other strings I’ve tested in the 93P, so I think when I restring the backup, I’m going to try a multi. I haven’t tried anything other than thin poly in the 93P in months, so I’m excited to reset. Up next: Head Velocity 1.25!

Update: I liked the feel of Gamma TNT2 Touch 17/Volkl Vstar 18L (silver) strung at 49/47. However, the TNT2 Touch snapped again with less than 10 hours of play. I think the TNT2 Touch is just too soft to string in a hybrid, so I am going to have to look for a new multi. I may try Wilson NXT Power next, as that's what I currently have lying around...

You can't mention Velocity without telling us which colour you are going to use!

Forgive me! I reckon natural..? But it might be black. I know I have both colors lying around, but I can’t remember if I have both in 1.25. Do they play differently? It’s been awhile since I used Velocity.

Edit: just confirmed, I will be stringing up Velocity in the natural color. Any tension recommendations for those who have used multis in the 93P?

I tried Xcel at 55 and felt it should have been higher. The demo I tried had PPC at 57lb, which I initially thought was going to feel like a skillet, but actually felt and played really good. As soft as Velocity is, I'd say on the higher end of tension.

Try Vstar in the main instead.

In the big Velocity thread people say the black colour is more powerful or slightly more lively / stiff, where as natural colour is more muted and lower powered. Personally I don’t find much difference between the two, but I didn’t do side-by-side controlled test.

Try Vstar in the main instead.

I know that'll make the TNTs last longer, but my arm sure won't. Based on past experience, I'm only stringing polys in my crosses.

I'm trying it again with TNT2 Touch and Vstar 18 instead of 18L. That might let the TNT last a teensy bit longer. I might also try it with Vstar 17.

I also have one strung with NXT Power 16 in the mains (49 lbs) and Vstar 19 in the crosses (47 lbs). (I prefer 17g strings, but my son uses the NXT Power 16, so that's what I happened to have around). I'll see how it compares to the TNT2 Touch. The NXT seems to have a coating that might make them more resilient.

Strung up one of my 93p 14x18 with Wilson NXT Power 16 in the mains (45lbs), and Volkl Vstar 19 in the crosses (43lbs) and am quite happy with it so far. The lower tension is definitely the way to go. Going to try 17g of both these strings at the same tension in my other 93p and compare for performance vs durability.

A bit more experimention with my setup.

Added 6 grams lead in total to 3 and 9 and another 4 grams at 12.

Installed Babolat Syn Gut 16 at 50lbs in mains and 44lbs Diadem Solstice Power 17 in crosses.

The racket plays like nothing I've owned before... Very good combination of plow through and control and low launch angle. Double handed backhand is just so good with this setup now.

After months playing with 93P, i tried different setups mainly to get better depth. I leaded high and low and, after trying hard to get what i searched with 360g and 345sw, i tried an hybrid setup with nat gut vs main at 50lbs and rs lyon 1.20 cross at 44 lbs, amazing but too powerful. Now i withdrawed all lead and with vanilla 93P 346g 330sw and this powerful setup, it’s perfect, a real pleasure and top comfort. I think in that frame, nat gut lasts long and is really the best deal for your money, now, time to upgrade footwork !!

After hitting with it for 6 hours or so (been using other frames/setups) I think you’re right. Defense/rallying are fine at 51, but if I try to flatten the ball out, it’s a little too powerful and the ball goes flying. Serving accuracy is a little less predictable as well, and against tougher competition I need my serve to be dialed in with the 93P. I know it’s been pretty uniformly dismissed, but I wonder if a thicker gauge (1.30?) multi would work at lower tensions.

Eventually I’ll try Velocity/Cream in the 93P, but I’ll try to put in another few hours with full bed V. My other 93P has SPPP 1.23, an oldie but goodie, and I’m struggling to find the range there also, so strings might just not be the issue (surprise surprise!).

93P 14x18 Update:

Tried Wilson NXT Power 17 at 45# in the mains and Volkl Vstar 17 at 43# in the crosses. The mains broke after about 2 hours. I framed a ball and they snapped clean right at a grommet, so I'm going to chalk it up as a freak occurrence. However, I didn't care for how they were playing compared to NXT Power 16/Vstar 19 at the same tension. My racket with that combo snapped again around 6 hours or so.

In the search for a more durable combo, I hit up my local tennis shop (Ray's Tennis of San Diego). I have found that Hiroko really knows her stuff, so I asked for a recommendation. She recommended Toalson Asterista 16 - an inexpensive mono nylon. She uses it in her new "house-blend" (which previously was Vstar 18L in mains and NXT Power 16 in crosses). I was highly skeptical, but at about 1/3 the price of NXT, I figured it was at least worth a try.

As soon as I opened the package, the familiar cheap nylon smell hit me - reminiscent of OG-Sheep Micro. The string was very soft and easy to string. I put it in the mains at 45# with Vstar 17 in the crosses at 45#. I was pretty much expecting performance like I have experienced with OG-Sheep in the past - a bit stiff with little ball pocketing.

It was exactly the opposite. It was soft and the ball pocketing was as good, if not better than the NXT. I liked it instantly. The trajectory was different than the NXT, so I found myself having to adjust my stroke, but I was quite pleased with the results.

I immediately went home and decided to try another combo in my other racket. I strung it up with the Toalson Asterista 16 at 45# in the mains and TierOne Ghost Wire 17 at 43# in the crosses, which I had been wanting to try as an alternative to the Vstar.

Wow. I was expecting the Ghost Wire to be a bit harsher than the Vstar, as it felt stiffer while stringing. But to my surprise, not only did it feel great, but the extra pop I was getting off the Asterista/Vstar combo was gone and the trajectory was nearly perfect. For the first time since switching from my Graphite 90 to the 93P, I felt the my control was back. I could feel ball pocketing even when taking a big swing, and I was making short angle and down-the-line shots that used to be so effortless with my Graphite Mids.

I still have a few more strings to try in my collection. I bought some Kirschbaum Pro Line Evolution when Tennis Warehouse had it on sale last month. I'm going to try it next for the crosses. But I am going to stick with the Toalson for the next month or so and see if the infatuation wears off. The biggest problem with it that I see right now is other than Ray's Tennis, I can't seem to find any other US retailer.

Anyway - that's my latest stringing saga.

Went out this morning with the 93P for some singles practice. New string setup: Klip Legend Black 17g and TierOne Ghostwire 19g at 50/45.

Really nice setup. Good pop. Lots of spin. Nice feel. Plush. Control was spot on. I think its better than gut/cream but largely because the thinner gauge in the ghost wire gives me better ball grab and spin. The big issue will be whether its durable enough and maintains tension well enough. But the first impression went really well.

If you are looking for a softer setup with great spin, this is a winner. I'd imagine ghost wire in a full bed might be really nice too for a softer poly setup.

Dartagnan64 - I tried Klip Legend Natural 17G and TierOne Ghostwire 19G at 52/48 in my Dunlop CX Tour 16x19. Loved it. Great plush feel, ball pocketing and snap back - so addictive to hit with. Only thing is ball flight was a little long and arching compared to my other trial (Signum Pro Tornado 17G and Ghost wire 19G at 48/48).
Wondering if at next stringing to tighten the mains or the crosses or both? I want to reign in that launch angle a bit but retain the pocketing. Have you messed around with tensions in your Klip / Ghost wire set up?

We "rein in" launch angles. I still am not entirely sure that I understand what a launch angle is, however, never mind ball pocketing or "plush feel."

Long time reader here. I want to say thanks for recommending this racquet. I started playing again after a 20 year break. Until I was sixteen I had played the prestige and now that I’ve started again, I’ve tried the new ones, tried the Pure Strike and played for some time with the RF97 which I loved. But playing four matches in two days was too much for my arms sadly. I was no. 40 in Germany in my youth and this racquet brings back everything! So good!

Sorry for the intro, here comes my string experience.
WeissCannon Scorpion at 21 kg. Soft, comfortable, great spin, awesome control, nice feel and adequate power.

Also tried Alu Power 1.25 at 20 Kg but felt too boardy during the first hit. Maybe it’s better when settled. But the Scorpion is just so awesome it makes me not wanna try anything else.

Maybe I’ll try Alu Ace 112 but that’s it.

Now I’m off enjoying this racquet a little more.

It’s the 1.22 gauge. It’s pretty perfect all around. After 6-8 hours it loses its playability a bit but still plays ok.
But a reel of this is 60€ here in Germany, so you cannot expect that much more really.

I’ve got my hands on a reel of Luxilon Ace 112. Is there anyone here who has tried this discontinued string? I would like to know if it’s worth trying it on the 93p? It’s just that I am really content with the performance of the Scorpion, I don’t know if it’s worth a shot. Maybe anyone here can compare these strings?

I tried it and wrote about it a smidgen either in this thread or the one in the racquets forum. Long story short, I liked it out of the box but its best characteristics were gone by about the 7 hour mark, so I cut it out at that point. It was harsher than I thought it would be, but really fun from hours 2-5. Overall not worth it for me — still haven’t found a better string than RS Lyon in the 93P.

Basically it gives you the tension maintenance of natural gut, comfort of a multi and spin of an average poly.

The best overall string for me.
Agree I accidentally discovered velocity after I bought 93p from someone here on the boards. I am usually a poly user (1.25 gauge typhoon ) but this string makes 93p even more plush and not losing much of spin if at all. It’s really a great string for 93p

I would start at 50lbs and adjust from there. I have only played natural and black. I have one 93p strung VS Touch / Yonex PTP at 45/40 and for damp days I have one strung with Velocity 17 at 45lbs.

Could you specify what you don’t like about hyper g and like more about origin or velocity? In the last 7 Hours i played with Alu power purple and it played superb! I lost some power compared to the Scorpion, so the Scorpion still is the best I’ve tried. Anyone else has tried it? I’ve played 10 hours with it and it’s still great!
The only thing I miss is the firmer and crisper response from the Alu. And I don’t like the colour of the Scorpion.
I am really interested in the pink Head Velocity MLT simply because I dig the colour.
What is there to gain with the head over a full poly bed?

Ok, I'm going with purple Alu Power mains 19 kilos and Hyper G crosses 18 kilos. It looks amazing. Honestly, I can play with anything and I don’t know about you but due to my 20 year break I’m amazed by all these new strings. I used to break a string in my Head Prestige every 40 minutes back then. So I needed to have five racquets going to a tournament. Now three are totally fine. I love that!
I'm outta here and done testing strings. Best regards from Germany!

Alu Power Purple 1.25 and Hyper G 1.20.
I am used to 1.30 and 1.35 gauges so this is as thin as I can go.
BTW, you should see the purple and the neon green... it’s incredibly beautiful.
Farewell everyone.

My Tourna Big Hitter Silver 18 is settling in really nicely. Around hour 5 or 6 now and it does pretty much everything I ask. I played my best set of doubles in years last night (a pretty informal setting but still, a 7-5 win over a skilled team) so I probably will leave this one in until it dies, then just re-up with it, or with something wicked similar.

Updated rankings (all in the 18x20 93P):
1) RS Lyon 1.20
2a) Tourna BHS 1.20
2b) Solinco Hyper G 1.15
3) Solinco Outlast 1.15
4) Blue Rock N Power
Last: Solinco Revolution 1.15 and gut/poly (just not my cup of tea)

Still to demo: KB PLII 1.15, SPPP 1.18, thinner gauges of the Solinco offerings.
What is it that you like so much about the RS Lyon? With its low-powered response, I believe you really need to put in a lot of your own power, don’t you? And how long does the playability of the Lyon last for you?

It doesn’t feel like most other polys. I like that it was adaptable. I felt like I got out of every shot what I put into it. Touch and softness when I need it, wicked spin or pop when I swing harder. And it played pretty consistently too. A tad too stiff for the first hour, then nice and steady for the next 8 hours, then a steady decline for the next 2-3 hours until I cut it out (FYI I’m not a string breaker).

I am honing in on my ideal stringing combo...

I've now spent a good deal of time with two string setups:

  1. Head Velocity 16 (black) in the mains at 45# and Tier One Ghost Wire 17 in the crosses at 43#
  2. Toalson Asterista 16 in mains at 45# and Tier One Ghost Wire 17 in the crosses at 43#

I like both very much. Good balance of power, feel, and control (for my game).

I was surprised at the softness of the Toalson, as it is a nylon mono-filament. Durability-wise, it lasted a long time (finally broke after 20+ hours).
I am also surprised with the durability of the Velocity - it has been in for 20+ hours and still hasn't broke. That's at least double the time I got out of either NXT Power or TNT Touch. The coating is clearly worn and there's notching, but no noticeable fraying, which is amazing for a multi.

Between the two, I think the Velocity feels a tad bit softer, but it's hard to tell as I didn't string them both at the same time. I am happy to play with either one. Price-wise, the Toalson is a tad bit cheaper for a spool ($110 vs $140). However, since it must be imported directly from Japan (there are no U.S. distributors that I can find), it will make it more difficult to obtain if my current source stops carrying it. Therefore, I am leaning towards the Head.

But I still have a few more combos to try. For the mains, I still have a set of Klip Legend and Tier One Triumph to try. And I also want to give Pro Line Evo a go in the crosses.

Have bought a reel of Oehms Black Pearl Rough 1.21. It’s great in the racquet! And of course, black overgrip and black strings are perfect looking in this bat! The reel of the Oehms is 45€!! What a bargain!

I was unaware of Oehms string. Price is great and it looks like I can buy it direct from Amazon here in the States. Might have to add some to my "list".
Not sure if Black Pearl Rough is the best choice for me, as I only use polys in the crosses and don't think that textured strings are of much value other than reducing the lifespan of the mains.

The Black Pearl Rough are really soft, which I like. And yeah, I‘d probably use another one as a cross.
But the profile of these is not as edgy as hyper g. It’s quite round still. I don’t usually like profiled strings but these are great!

I am back to purple Alu Power in the crosses 18 kilos and hyper g as mains 20 kilos. Well, I actually switched mains and crosses. I am back to competition at a very high speed on carpet and the control makes a huge difference to Scorpion or especially Black Pearl Rough.
This is combination I’ll be sticking to until summer.
I don’t even think I’ll have to string more than two more racquets in the Prince. The strings seem to last forever in this tight pattern which is a nice bonus.

Tried the Tour Bite 17 at 40 pounds. It is awesome!! Never tried TB before and everyone seemed to say it is stiff and harsh but that’s not how it felt to me.
I needed two hours of adjusting to the very high launch angle. Balls were flying long at first and I felt completely insecure. After the first hour I thought what horrible, soft and uncontrollable strings. But after adjusting I think these are the perfect pairing for this racquet.
You get easy depth, even in defensive situations, great spin and after you get used to the launch angle, great control. The power and the touch are also really good, especially at this low tension. I only played on carpet indoors and I believe these will be so much better on clay even. Wow!

I like these so much that I’ve committed to two reels of this stuff as it was on discount for 80€ (one 200m reel). So this is what I’ll be playing with for the rest of my life, I guess. Haha.

I feel like these are the softest coat-polys I have tried in this stick.

If you try these, give it some adjusting time. I feel like every shot is great now. Drop shots, lobs, approach shots, returns, serves, everything.

So happy, I have these a try...

You're not imagining it. Since I got my 93P (18x20), I went through fullbed syn gut (16G), fullbed poly (RS Lyon 1.20, Still-in-black HTS 1.20), and now gut/poly (VS Team 1.25/YPTF 1.25). From fb syngut to fb poly wasn't too bad, but from fb poly to gut/poly I could feel the balance and weight change. So much so that I've added weight to top of handle to restore it back to its HL balance point. My next string job will not but gut/poly any more, or if I do, will go for the thinnest possible poly.
Pro's Pro Black Force 1.14 is light weight, slippery, and serves as an excellent cross string.
