This all boils down to that Thiem match. If he even hit the ball in that match like he did today, he would have won. Instead he was hitting all those passive neutral shots like a zombie or something. Nothing you can really do against Roger when he serves like he did today and is zoned in unless you yourself are at your absolute best, but he should have beaten Thiem and he knows it. Just very unclutch play which is costly because he still would have been in the SF with a loss today.
Somehow managed to turn a 4-1 lead in the 3rd set TB into 5-7 deficit. Honestly that upset me more than this match

Yeah, he just didn't really open his shoulders against Thiem for whatever reason. When he does and he's serving well he's practically unbeatable but sadly that same day in, day out consistency he used to possess during the very prime of his career just isn't there anymore.

It was just odd. He does the same thing against Wawrinka but people don't listen to me and act like I'm seeing things. I have been watching Djokovic play for 13 years. I know what it looks like when he is playing at even an above average level. He clearly has declined and we just have to accept it. Hopefully he can save his best for the big matches in the future to seal more glory but the dominant Djokovic of 2011 and 2014-2016 is not coming back unfortunately. He's still good enough to win Slams though like we saw this year.

Yea I was very upset with how he didn't open up his shoulders and end it there and let Thiem take that match and a possible YE #1 away from him.

Thank God he still fights in the Slams 'cos he definitely doesn't in the best of 3 tournaments anymore!

It was up and down year in the BO3 for sure. Losing matches from a winning position or with leads, blowing hot and cold from one match to the next, and his focus all over the place. Let's just hope he can still maintain his fire in Slams.

He just won Paris lol
Yeah but moments like that have been few and far between this year. Had he dropped a set in any of those matches I wonder how much he would've fought, which is something I never even used to contemplate when he was at his very best and tried to win pretty much every point like his life depended on it. Nowadays whenever an opponent puts up any kind of resistance he seems to just fold like a cheap tent, again something we hardly ever saw from him in that 2011-16 period. Let's be honest, whenever Novak serves and volleys, as he did tonight at match point, it's always a sure sign that he's mentally checked out and just wants to get the hell out of there. Very disappointing to say the least.

Fed didn't play out of his mind,Novak really gifted the match to him..I have never seen him play like that, injury is the best reason
I could be wrong, but what I noticed was the opposite of WC. He was charged up emotionally and wanted to "give it" to the crowd at WC.

But here, he seemed very "whatever" as the crowd showed little respect for Djoker at times.

As the emotional guy Djoker is, he will have his "emotional" ups and downs. I think today was one where it got to him. Not mentally, but emotionally. He was probably thinking what do I have to do to get respect?

I then think he got to the point where he thought "fine, I will give you what you want, I am out."

No wave to the crowd was his way of showing them as well.

Even I get a little bothered by it. I mean Djoker does some of the most incredible things on the court. Sad that he does not get more respect "cheering" even if they are not fans of his.

I really don't know what Ivanasevic brings to the table now...Novak needs an intellectually opposing person in his camp and not another thick Balkan in his group..I said it at the time of Cincinnati also,Becker was good for Novak because he was direct and bold.He said Novak lost RG final 2015 because he wanted RG to come to him than earn the victory..

Also,as emotional as Novak is,probably after the thiem match he felt I didn't play badly at all and still ended up losing and it rarely happens on Novaks career..I mean if he is playing well he wins..He sort of emotionally gave up yesterday..

Cringeworthy is the hype Fedal gets..If Novak was playing well,Fedal gets shut down in 2 sets max.Thank you very much..Now we get to hear this,Federer rewinds the clock back to 2005 and what not and its ****in hilarious and sad how deluded the common crowd is really...

But these emotionally down performance is worryingly happening a lot in Novaks case.He needs to steady the ship and fast..He is not 25 anymore.

WTF was this performance?! What's going on with him lately in BO3?
Writing's on the wall. He isn't capable of winning two tournaments in a row now. Obviously not as dedicated to training as he was before.
Djokovic has done badly in every tournament with Vajda and Ivanisevic together.
His game plan seems unclear. He started to work on shortening the points and net game but gets discouraged quickly and falls back to baseline if he loses the point few times in a match. I liked his approach and strategy he showed in Cincinnati, but he has to endure some losses and keep it up.

2020 will be a good year for Novak, another year end number 1. All in all, 2019 still good season. Have a good holiday Novak. Enjoy yourself.

I see it differently -
To not show respect and cheering for your guy is fine - I am fine with that as a Novak fan .

But British especially , Show " disrespect and disdain " which actually bothers Novak..

Roger and Novak matches at other places like Australian open Paris or other important masters have Crowd supporting Fed and it's understandable as he is the Older legend of game and big star . But there they cheer for fed and that's it . But they want a quality match and cheer for good quality shots hit by both players . and don't try to jeer or humiliate the opponent of Fed .

At US Open and in England - Especially versus Fed , Crowd doesn't even want a quality match . they just try to disturb Novak , jeer at him , Shout when he makes double faults or UE . They always try to disturb him to make Fed win.. They wont mind if someone breaks Novak's leg for Fed to win the match and GrandSlam . Such is the kind of insecurity and loser attitude among Brits and New York fans of Fed .
I actually like to enjoy fed djoker matches for the quality but Brit and New York fans make me stand in support of Novak . I will always stand wid One man army David against Goliath and his 20,000 rich privileged army .
The crowds r pathetic there..

looking forward to Australian open meeting between Fedovic -as crowds are civilised and sporting there :)

I think thats it.
Djokovic might win one more slam
Federer might win one more slam

Nadal will easily win 6/7 more and will dominate heavily for the next 2/3 years - minimum.

This is a Djokovic news thread. Keep comments on other players out of it. There is a Nadal news thread for that.

On a side note, I hope the elbow thing isn't serious:cry:
Unfortunately i fear his elbow and shoulders are like nadals knees. Degenerated chronic. His body is like a 26 year old but the shoulders and elbow are more like 100 years old. Lets hope he can maintain for a few more years hate to see any one suffer from injuries.

The year 2019 is bittersweet for Nole and his fans. The year 2019 is a successful season, Djoker earned 2 GS titles - he setting a historic record at the AO and won historic final in the Wimbledon, but was supposed to be better in Bo3 matches. Five times in season 2019 he lost the match after winning the first set, which he had never done before in his career. Losing with Medvedev in Cincinnati or the collapes on Sunshine Double cost him YE1.

Let’s put Nole 2019 in hindsight.
  • AO absolute peak, semi and final might be the most dominant performance among his 16 majors.
  • Madrid, edged out Thiem and beat gassed-out Tsitsipas in the final.
  • Wimbleton, escaped from Fed 40-15 two champion points on serve.
  • Tokyo, very weak field, didn’t face any top 10 player.
  • Paris. Revenge to Tsitsipas, then faced Dimi and green horn Shapo.

I jumped on Nole’s wagon from USO 2007 and think 2019 a very good year, especially considering who he beat in major finals. He couldn’t bring back 2011/2015 peak, but excellent (to me) or at least fairly ok in big match, big points. His 3 match with Thiem were all toss up, would you like to trade Madrid for WTF? I won’t. We don’t know what would turn out in semi/final, if Nole pass Thiem.

To be honest, when the draw was released a week ago, I thought Nole is in better group. We know how Greek and Russian can bring to Nole. After watching Germen beat down Rafa, I felt Nole was really lucky in another group.

If I have to pick something against Nole, he might play too soft/passive against Thiem, and hope his level would drop down. As it did in the third set, Nole dragged the match to tie break and led 3-0. The rest is history. He took lesson from it and play ultra-aggressive against Fed. I couldn’t believe that Nole had no any clue on Fed serve during the whole match, even the second serve. I felt he tried to dictate, or at least neutralize right from ROS, instead of simply blocking back into play. A strategy mistake? Maybe. If match schedule was different, it might have paid off. Still, when Fed brought lighting out serve like that, you can’t expect 40-15 thunder strike twice, right? Any Nole camps want to trade Wimbledon for WFT RR?

2019 is weaker, but more consistent version of 2016. He was far from 2016 1st half peak, but didn’t drop as sharp in 2nd half For myself, his loss to Thiem and Fed is more acceptable than loss to Murray, Agut and Cilic. If you watch those two full matches, you would appreciate what a high-quality matchup they brought to Nole. I’m first tennis fan, second Nole fan, so while I am disappointed with Nole loss, still thrilled by the match quality itself.

Novak said this in one of the interviews after yesterday - 'If I have to draw the line, I think it was still a very good season, winning two slams and five titles. Of course I'm still hot-headed off the court, but all in all, it was a good season.'

Also Pique, football player and one of the people behind all new Davis Cup said this - "Hopefully Nadal can come. I know Djokovic has been suffering from elbow problems, I hope he is here next week."

It looks like that Novak won't even play in Davis Cup for Serbia, elbow problems are back as it seems.

Djokovic said it was fine. He thinks he turned it too quickly and aggressively which caused the pain. That elbow probably will never be the same after that chronic injury.

2015
2011
2016
2018
2019
2013
2014
2012

The last two years he's put up good results, but there's something about each season that doesn't get them in the top 3. 2015 and 2011 are far and away the best, followed by 2016 (his collapse notwithstanding, the 1st half was incredible.) 2018 follows because of the hugely solid performances at the end of the year, but he still failed to cross the finish line twice (Paris and WTF).

Djokovic played similarly most of this year. Quite solid in slams, but letting small things get to him. The matches against Thiem this year really exemplify that. He was on the verge of winning both matches, yet choked. Moreover, he went out early in both Indian Wells and Miami. There's just something bugging him. It seems like small things are getting to him more and more, which isn't a good thing by any means. I really hope he figures out what's bothering him so much and comes back with the hunger we saw at the AO.

This is a bad move by Djokovic, his elbow will be ****ed for Australia ..

Are you kidding? This is Davis Cup and Nole's not like Rafa jumping ship to save himself! He has a couple months to recover for the AO! There's no one that tough on the French team; Tsonga a mere shell of himself after so many absences from the tour! Gasquet about to cash it in along with Monfil hopefully! If it's bad, a substitution will be made I'm sure! :sneaky:

He said his elbow was fine. I actually like how Djoker is pushing through some of these minor injuries and not making excuses or "jumping ship" like you said.

At this age, learning to play through the bang ups will help him. Your not going to feel 100% too often going forward at 32.

I just have to say how ridiculously and superbly fit Novak looks here, like a human machine. I think it's easier to see the fitness of pro athletes when they're in street clothes. Tenacity posted this earlier.

Not exactly "body beautiful," but Nole's obviously the most fit of the top players; even over Rafa who's a walking corpse if you go by the injuries and general en oui of playing the game when he feels like it!

Novak is now leading for # of tier 1 events won: 55 ( 16 slams + 5 WTF + 34 masters) while both Fed and Nadal are tied at 54.
Great job getting in the lead despite being the youngest of the 3! (Nadal: 19 slams + 0 WTF + 35 masters, Fed: 20 slams + 6 WTF + 28 masters)
