Wawrinka done in 2020?

Wawrinka turns 35 in March. If he has a good enough year in 2020 to suggest he might win a slam in 2021 he might keep playing. If he's just making up the numbers he'll probably retire. Knowing that next year might well be his last is likely motivation for him to give it everything.

We'll see. He improved steadily through 2019 after a long road back from major surgery and is on the cusp of re-entering the top 10 for the first itime n several years. If he can maintain that momentum, stay healthy, and get some impressive results, I think he'll keep going. If he regresses or has a horrible season, he'll hang it up.

The next Olympics is in 2020. I think that is why both Fed and Stan are hanging in there. It wouldnt be a surprise to see both retire when the next year is over.

Nah, Federer is still hungry. I get the feeling he's addicted to tennis, honestly. He wouldn't know what to do with himself f he retired. At best he's probably waiting for Nadal and Djokovic to retire first.

What a wonderful player he has been to watch over the years. If 2020 is indeed his last year, he’ll leave a huge void in men’s tennis.

I hope Stan doesn't retire, I really enjoy watching him play, he's a great character also, it was great seeing him evolve into a top player around 2013 then winning 3 slams getting to 3rd in the World.

34/35 isn't the same in 2019 as it was in 1999 in tennis terms, maybe motivation could be a factor.

I doubt this tweet has any retirement context.
That's what I think too, more of a here we go again feel than this is the last one.

Stan is obviously near the end of his career. The comeback from the knee surgery hasn't been all that easy and it's only this year that he started to perform closer to what he was capable of and he's finally built up his ranking again hovering near the top 10 once again. If he can pick-up from where he left off and improve on that while remaining healthy then I don't see why he wouldn't stay a few more years if he's still a contender.

Well if you read the comments, Stan replies to someone, saying hes not calling it quits, but at his age, its one season at a time.

There.

He's the greatest overachiever in Slams in recent times, i.e. 3 GS titles out of 16 tournaments. This includes 6 challengers. Unbelievable. He's one Olympic gold and Davis Cup. His main achievement is being Novak Djokovic killer, stopper, whatever... He did all the dirty work for his compatriot Roger Federer in reducing Novak's GS tally.

Fed didn't win a major in 19 and won't win one in 20. Once his conners competition is done no point in playing.
He sure as hell reached finals and semis in 2019 majors...in what universe do you see this as an indication there is "no point in playing"?

Djokovic was pretty mediocre at this WTF. I say he goes out in the semis anyway. Especialy since wouldn't he have still played Tsitsipas? I definitely feel he loses to him the way both were playing this event.
It's always the same when Djokovic loses. He wasn't at his best. Blablabla. He beat Berr 6-2 6-1 in an hour. It took an absolutely redlining Thiem to barely edge him in the 2nd RR. Federer took the racket out of his hands for much of the 3rd match with a sublime serving performance. If Djokovic had beaten Federer, he was the favorite for the tournament. Hell, he was the favorite throughout until the moment he lost to Federer. He'll be the favorite at the next effing tournament lol. Tsitsipas would still have the memories of the Paris beat down fresh in his mind going into that match and Djokovic isn't losing to Thiem twice in a row on indoor HC.

Certainly looks like a hint, and that groundwork is being laid.

Although obviously you could see him changing his mind if he does really well.

That's apparently what he indicated on his Twitter - that he's taking it 1 season at a time, not saying it's his last season for sure.

Stan will turn 35 in a few months' time so he's obviously playing everything by ear especially in light of his recent knee surgeries. If he feels fit enough, match-worthy enough and motivated enough by this time next year he might be saying the same for 2021.

Tsitsipas and even Thiem are overtaking him, and there is alot of pride in tennis for these legendary players.

Also, from a financial perspective, his brand is way more valuable if he doesn't have the "broke down journeyman" phase.

But he still loves the game...I would give my right arm (I'm left handed with a obh, so theoretically I could still play ;) ) to be able to do that for a living. Hell, he and Muzza should start playing dubs together until 45 or so...
