Trying to move on from the Prince Textreme Tour 95 (or not).....

So in a nutshell, I've been trying to move on from the Tour 95 (2015) to possibly a different (yet similar) racquet. I tried the new version and wasn't too impressed. I also tried (and used) the Dunlop Srixon Revo 3.0F modified to similar specs of the Prince, and while it was close, never felt quite right. I also tried Yonex Vcore Pro 97 (310), WIlson Pro Staff 97, Dunlop CX 200 Tour (16x19), and even an Angell.

Btw, does anyone have a grip issue after using the Prince? I use a L4 grip in Prince, but with any other company it has to be L3 with occasional build-up....

With that said, maybe you guys could give some input on racquets. I did some searching by beam width (which is important to me), strung weight, and balance. I can modify racquets as needed as well.

Here's what I came up with:

Wilson Blade 98 (16x19)
Wilson Clash 98
Head 360 Radical MP/Pro
Yonex VCORE 98
Volkl V-Sense 10 Mid (96)/Tour (98)
Tecnifibre TFight 315 Ltd XTC (98)

All are between 11.4-11.8 strung, thinner beam width, anywhere from 4-8pts hl strung.

Worst case scenario is try to stock up on Tour 95's.... lol. Thanks!

If grip size is an issue. Stick with Prince. Prince Phantom 93P or TT100 (310).

Was gonna suggest the VCP97 (310) too but I see you have tried and passed on it already.

I used to use a prince TT95 a few years ago. After changing to the now defunct Prince Classic Response (which was pretty awesome after you got used to it) and now the Prince Phantom Pro 100p. I definitely say to try all the phantoms. Don’t let the string pattern push you away. They feel great and play better than the TT95.

It's just weird with the prince. Like their 4 1/2 is just smaller than all other companies, but I think I've found the fix there by using a half sleeve buildup. Plus the sleeve adds the weight I like in the handle as well.

I was looking at the 14x18 phantom, probably because of the spin. Lol

The VC97 I found just a little too flexy for my own personal liking. Great racquet though!

I see you have Clash 98 in your list. Wouldn't that be even more flexy than VCP97?

It may be, but in terms of specs I just listed. I have a friend who works on the pro tour that uses it currently, and says it isn't as flexible in the throat comparably to the rest of the frame.

I hit with our Radical MP demo, strung with Pro Edge at 52#, overgrip and dampner and it felt pretty good. I just added some lead under the grip so I'll see how that feels too

The 2019 Head Radical is super interesting. I went in thinking I wouldn't like it, but it makes easy power, and has no shock/vibration (which i like).

I need to bring the static weight up but lead under the grip, 3/9, and a littke at 12 so far and it's awesome. I think I sits around 11.8 currently (330g)

Ok, I would recommend demoing some of the racquets from your list. Is Prokennex an option? If so, try the Q+ Tour 325 and or 315.

TT95 is very unique! You could also try customizing an Angell to identical specs and see.

I think if you liked the TT95, I think you’d like the 93P even more. Don’t let the headsize turn you off. It does not feel smaller than the TT95. I do not notice the difference even while switching between the 97” or 98” frames. Also, although it’s heavier, I felt the C10 Pro plays really close to,the TT95 but with a lot more power.

I know you are trying to move away from Prince, but the 93P 14x18 is a very, very good stick, whose specs are not miles away from the TT95 (2015).

You would need to find the right string, though, as they will break much sooner given the very open pattern. A durable string in a gauge 16 would do the trick, and play very nicely in that frame.

I've definitely thought about that one. I think I'll have to try and get my hands on one locally and give it a try. The only thing with Prince is because of TW, there's no more outside reps, no coaches/players deals like in the older days. I'm trying to switch to something I can get through local reps

I just demoed the Technifibre 315 LTD XTC next to the Pro Staff 97 with Countervail and preferred the Pro Staff just because of how much more maneuverable it was, very whippy through the air and still very stable. The Technifibre was also a very solid racquet with adequate power and super stable. I am looking to move on from my Prince Phantom 100P's to get a little more free power. I feel like my shoulder was wearing out from having to swing out on every shot. My next demos that I'm hitting with tonight are the Prince Tour 100 and Tour 100P. I've only hit with your Tour 95 once but I think you will like the Technifibre! Give it a try!

Funny you should say that, before my Prince I had the Tecnifibre TFight 320 2012-2015ish and loved it. I almost bought one of the XTC Ltd to try it because I can get it decently cheap, but at 315 wouldn't have too much wiggle room with customizing so I held off haha.

I hear you. Prince distribution is problematic, and not only in the US.

I saw you tried the Yonex Vcore Pro 97 (310). You didn't like that frame? I thought it would have been an easy transition from the TT95, once weighted to your preferences.

Yeah it was a super fun racquet, very similar to the Angell I got used (though the Angell is a 100), but I couldn't get the grip size to fit right, and it was a bit too flexy in the throat for my liking. It went through the air beautifully, but I had some issues on serve and bh (where I felt the flex the most - and BH is one of my best shots besides serve+volley).

I guess I'm realizing I like muted, somewhat low powered, little flex frames... lol

The new Radical MP has been fun. Restrung it at 47# with 16g Sonic Pro Edge (I want to try some different strings as well), and it plays great. Easy power, muted feel but easy access to spin for me.

I have lead from about the 3rd cross string from the top (2 o'clock-ish) to the 3rd cross up from the bottom (5ish?) on both sides. Also have 6 rings of lead from the top of the butt cap up the handle under the grip. Using a thicker replacement grip fixed my grip issue, plus an overgrip and dampner puts it at 338g approximately. It truly feels solid, and seems like my specs so far.

So far....lol!

I would definitely give the new Dunlop Srixon CX 200 Tour 16X19 a try. I seem to like similar rackets/specs and, among the rackets I’ve played — in an effort to move on from my beloved Wilson Pro Staff Tour 95 — the Dunlop May be my next racket ... I actually just ordered the Tour 95 (2015) to demo just in case I like it as much as the Dunlop.

I actually did get one at a good price, the Dunlop, and while it's a great frame, the Dunlop 16x19 pattern actually narrows towards the middle of the string bed, whereas the Prince, and other traditionally open patterns have most of the cross section of the head the same size. So, same string at same tension the Dunlop didn't get the same spin and pop the Prince does (to me at least).

I love my Prince. I used it to my 4.5 matches in our playoffs and it's like butter.

Though, I have an Angell TC100 16x19, 348g strung, overgrip, dampner and it's amazing. I actually ordered a TC95 (unstrung 320g, 31cm balance) because they were having a deal. If I like it that may be it for me and have my Prince's on standby lol!

If it's anything like the 100 with the same spec, it's fun. Powerful at lower tensions, easy on the arm, very quick through the air with the 20mm beam, very solid. I find the 100 a little odd coming from the 95 Prince but could get used to it.

I'll definitely post when it comes in - hopefully early next week.

I am also trying to find a replacement for the original TT95. Something with a larger head. The 100P is too light doesn't pack the same swingweight.

Hey tpro! Wait for the new Prince Phantom 97P releasing early next year, it has textreme twaron in the frame, inserted in both the throat and at 10/2 o clock. It's 320g unstrung just like the TT 95 but with a 16x18 string pattern. I think it plays very similarly to the TT95 2015 version like we discussed, but with slightly more power and marginally larger frame size although the frame is actually rounder and shorter than the TT95. The string spacing is actually slightly denser and extends less both vertically and horizontally on the edges too. Not as stable as the TT95 but it does cut through the air faster. The added twaron does not over dampen the frame like it did in the TT95 2019 version, probably because of the super thin phantom beam. I've managed to get my hands on one but I can't say how and cannot get anymore until public release anyways. The added power is nice though!

Ok - well, sorry for the delay lol. For reference I strung all racquets starting at 45/42, with typically a full set of 17g poly. I also modified each frame to about 348g static, and a balane around 31cm give or take.

Racquets I ended up testing:
1) Yonex VCore 98
2) Head 360 Radical MP
3) Angell TC95 16x19
4) Angell TC100 16x19

1) The Yonex I actually liked, but it was almost too underpowered for my liking. I had it strung at my usual 45/42, and even went a little lower. In it's stock form with an overgrip/dampner it was 11.8 and it actually felt the best in that setup. All in all, I just didn't feel as connected as I would have liked, and didn't feel as I was hitting as big a ball as I wanted.

2) The Radical was another fun test, but again couldn't get it to dial in. I didn't mind the muted nature but if you didn't connect just right (me personally), couldn't generate what I wanted with the spin. It was just a weird frame overall - though it was very solid. Overall I liked it less than the Yonex.

3) Angell TC95 - bought directly from Angell, built to 320g / 310cm balance/63ra unstrung. Something was just off for me with it. I strung it low, strung it high, and it never felt right. Felt way too boardy for me. I felt like I had to fully generate all my own power, didn't get as much spin....I just don't know. For me it was over and done in less than an hour - very unfortunate.

4) Angell TC100 - bought used from a TW poster: LOVE IT. So the final specs after modifying, etc, is 348g static / 31cm balance exactly on all 4 that I ended up getting. I bought a 3/8 grip and used electrical tape under the grip to build it up and to add the amount of weight I wanted.

The easy power, super solid feel, touch is exactly what I was looking for. I have it strung low again (45/42) which for some is way to powerful but it's a great blend for both instructing and the mainly doubles play that I do.

I just have to get used to using a 100in head size again, and figure out which string I like best. Currenlty I'm testing Head Lynx 1.20, Tecnifibre Ice Code 1.20, and Kirschbaum Xpolsive Speed 1.25. I'm shocked at the durability of the 18g in the 100.

So far, the TC100 is going to be it!

I love my TT95 and always wished for a little more power, and the new 2019 TT95 seemed like it with it's increase stiffness. Why weren't you impress with the 2019 TT95?

I did. When I tried the TT95 2019 I also had the 310. At that time the 310 wasn't my taste (might be now lol), and I found the feel of the new 95 just wasn't the same for what I liked or the 2015.

After testing a ton, I found I love the thinner beams, still on the heavier side. I currently use a TC100 modified to about 12.3oz, and swingweight about the same (which was pretty different then the TT95). The power, the stability is just so much fun lol

Were you able to notice able power increase from the stiffness update 60 to 64 between on the TT95 2015 -->2019? I'm wondering if I'm looking at the wrong racket (TT95 2019) if I'm looking for a little more power, maybe the TT100 is the correct one.

Honestly, I didn't but could tell it was a little stiffer. I was stringing my TT95 at 45/42, and it did exactly what I liked.

I might revist the 100 for fun, but I know it's hard to go back to thicker beams . The 2015 was a great frame, kind of ruined me in a way, and I'm glad I found the Angells.

Well, if you're looking for more 2015 I have a couple flawless ones I'd unload lol!

I have used TT tour 95 almost exclusively for the last 4 years. I could never really find anything else that I liked. I am currently playing with the Yonex v core 98. As I play with it I am getting to like it a lot. It's different but it feels much more stable on volleys and seems to have a little more power. It feels a little head heavier but not so much that I can't get used to it. It's the only thing I have used that I am tempted to change to permanently.

That was my issue. I tried the VCore 98, weighted it up, but for some reason it felt underpowered vs other racquets I was trying.

But I definitely agree, the 2015 was such a different and fantastic racquet. I only moved away from it, well, because I like messing around, and I was coming off an arm injury and when I got back to using it, I felt I needed something else.

I think from your list, I'd suggest the Clash 98 because it will offer more power and spin than the TT95, but would you be ok with not as pin-point in control? As far as the Blades are concerned, I wouldn't go near the 16x19. The 18x20 pattern is much more solid and predictable in responses. The TFight 315 is nice, but I don't think you will be gaining anything over the TT95. I wouldn't go near the new Volkl's. They messed up their 10 series.

I'd seriously recommend demoing the Blade 18x20, or the Ultra Tour (*if you don't mind modding), or even the Prince Phantom 93P. Don't let the 93P's headsize intimidate you. In my experience, the 93P was much more stable and easier to use than the TT95.

I just can't do 18x20. I need/prefer the 16x19 for my game. I have a Gravity MP modified, a VCore Pro 97 (2019), lol. And a Clash 98 should be coming any day now.

I really do love the TC100 - weighted up, I get tons of easy power, easy spin, and I love how stable it is on the volleys.

Well, in my experience, I’ve tried both versions from the 2015 version, and my conclusion is that the 18x20 Blade is superior to the 16x19 Blade by a big margin, especially the control and stability. It’s probably wrong to say the 16x19 is not good, but to me, the 18x20 is better in probably all aspects, including spin. Maybe the serves were equal, but the rest was no contest for me.

Of course. I just hope you demo the Blade 18x20 if you are going to demo the 16x19. It was just better for me, and I believe most who have tried both will probably agree that the 18x20 is a better overall performer.

Mirrors my experience as well with the new v7 blades. I never tried the 2015 16/19, only the 18/20 version. And I did say the v7 16/19 was not good.
