Hello tennis friends! I’ve started playing tournaments again in NorCal starting 2018 and have some up and down results. I’ve won two Men’s Open singles tourneys in 2019 and I really like competing out there.

I figured I would like to share my progress for anyone who is interested (please ignore if you aren’t interested AND especially if you are a Better Call Saul fan lol).

Cheers!

@MaxTennis is it ok if we ask for other tennis related stuff here as well? Eg maybe some better single match strategy or fundamentals like OHBH? Or you just want to keep it only to tournament stuff? Either way are cool

I somehow got the number one seed for the singles draw, but there’s a lot of tough players in the tourney that are unseeded.

Was the draw supposed to come up? It didn't for me.

I had some of my best wins against top players in early rounds. Whether it's due to having just travelled, not being used to the conditions or just not mentally switching on yet .. it seemed to often work in my favour.

Good luck. It may not look like it, but could be an opportunity for you to get a good win.

I don't think I can link the draw directly, but it's under Draws -> Men's Open Singles

I love the international nature of NorCal draws, especially in the lower levels. So many people from all parts of the world.

And dudes named Fuchs.

These small NorCal tournaments only attract local players lol. No prize money so the top dogs aren't playing it.

The Fuchs brothers are good. The younger one is a 5 star 8th grader, while the older one (that I am slated to meet in the semis) just signed to play at Gonzaga.

I didn’t mean actual international players. What I meant is people of lots of ethnicities. Like look at the 4.5 draw. Most of those dudes aren’t white. Refreshing.

Ohhh, sorry I misunderstood what you meant. My bad.

Yeah, the Bay Area is very diverse. SoCal is too honestly.

Can confirm. Grew up in SoCal up to my mid 30's, I think you mentioned somewhere you went to UCLA? I'm a fellow alum as well, class of '02 yeah! Used to play casually with friends at the LATC at times and pretended like we were good at the game :)

I live in the east coast DMV area now, but in my experience nothing comes close to the diversity in southern and northern California... fortunately there's s decent Korean food here but, Koreatown Korean food is better than Korean food in Korea lol.

Awesome! I was Class of 2017. I have great memories of LATC. Good times.

Koreatown LA food is awesome. There is no comparison in NorCal honestly.

Max do you find tennis more enjoyable now than in juniors? Less pressure? More fun?

Yes, I actually do enjoy it a lot more now as an adult than as a junior.

Pressure was a bad thing for me; I was just an average junior player, but still, I would get very tight when I played higher ranked players and there were a lot of matches I remember where I had set points or even match points and choked it away.

Nowadays, I don't care about winning or losing as much so it has definitely helped me relax a bit on court rather than getting too tight, and I play a lot more aggressively now so it's helped my game improve in some aspects.

Your son sounds like he has a bright future ahead of him. Tell him adult tennis is something to look forward to after graduation because you get to meet a lot of great people and it's more social :)

Tennis junior players are smart. I've always said this. The hard work and dedication is habit forming for a successful future in adult life.
