Good Commentator Alert : Commentating on the 2020 AO ASIA-PACIFIC WILDCARD PLAYOFF from China, on Tennis Channel are two worth listening to for master class commentary lessons, Todd Woodbridge and Brett Phillips--good stuff on technique, tactics and strategy. Not a dog and pony show like Mary & Mac. And they're very respectful to not talk over play.

None of the American or British commentators talk over play. The Russians and some of the eastern European commentators do this. You will not find a single instance where Mary or Mac ever talked over play.

:-D You CANNOT BE SERIOUS! Mrs, Carrillo. :-DYou are being sarcastic I hope--often sarcasm doesn't translate well over the internets. If you're serious, I have no further response for you--I'll let the records speak-over play for themselves.

And they're very respectful to not talk over play.

"respectful"?? Might be disrespectful if the players can hear them, but otherwise...........

Respectful to the game of tennis, to the players and to the audience who may want to focus on the point at hand and not on the commentators patter. Professional tennis commentators all understand this and STFU when a point is being played. The ones who got their plum jobs by notoriety or who they might have known, intrude with their patter, discussing all forms of personal drivel, from wishing their mothers' happy birthday to their art show gallery openings, or parades they may be grand marshalling.

It's a game. And an increasingly dull one with endless baseline play. Try not to take it too seriously. If you need silence "to focus on the point" you can turn the sound off.

So, you're the one the camera's focus on getting to your seat while the point is in progress, and when attending a classical music concert talks on his cell phone. What makes tennis different from other "games" is that it requires intense focus to appreciate its subtleties like hearing the sound the ball makes coming off the racket. If play is too slow and "dull" for you, DVR the matches and play them in fast-forward.

I understand you're just trolling, why not find a holiday party to go to instead.

I agree, what is terrible when its like mary or patrick telling some random story no one gives a damn about.

Another annoying thing is what Pam does, she rambles on about garbage, quiet during the point, then continues the dumb story over the next three points. Instead of talking about the match

I like the goodyoung (sp) guy and his partner. They give play by play and stick to the match.

Tennis channel has some very good ones as well, Leif, Jimmy and a few others (havent watched lately)

I'll explain, so pay attention: walking to your seat or talking at a concert disturbs not only the players/musicians, but the rest of the audience around you. A commentator talking on TV doesn't actually disturb the players, because the commentator is isolated in a booth at some distance. If I'm throwing too much info at you at one time, let me know. And I would say tennis requires less focus than most games for the viewer because you're only watching two (sometimes four) players rather than the actions of, say, 20 players. It's perhaps the least cerebral of the major sports.

Pam gets annoying. Shriver and Arias still the very worst by a long shot.

Overall the TTC commentators are pretty good imo.

I like Arias now, not nearly as arrogant as when he started

Yeah we here ya' loud and clear.
But turning the sound off is not the ideal way to watch a tennis match.
As was mentioned, if you play and appreciate the sport you know that the sounds of tennis play an important part of the watching experience.
The ball impacting the strings, the ball bouncing on each side of the net etc.

Having said that, I find myself turning the sound off quite often for matches just to avoid the pesky commentators who add nothing of value for me.

Name me some "cerebral sports" if you don't mind.
An oxymoron if there ever was one.

John Alexander is the best commentator, but he's a politician now so not commentating :)

Don't understand the dislike of Jimmy Arias, I go out of my way to tune into the matches he commentates on. He's been there, top 10 in the world, director of the IMG Academy. Listening to him is like taking a master class. What's the problem with him?--his voice, demeanor? I don't get why he would be disliked? I listen to commentators to learn, not for how deep their voices are.

John wertheim and paul Annacone are simply the worst.

WHY??? What don't you like about the way they commentate??? Or, is it just your subjective opinion???
Obviously just my subjective opinion, but I don't like how Paul is very basic and boring. He might be good for the casual fan, but for me it is hard to listen to his cliche boring commentary.

John just thinks he is so cool and so knowledgeable... both are not true.

I like Arias. He speaks confidently, and is interesting with good insight and humor. Noncringworthy as many of the others.

Some of the best commentators are dredged up by Tennis Channel for the holydaze season--I guess the Macs & the Everts are allowed off and they bring the irregulars in. Some of these tennis pundits--if tennis pundit is not an oxymoron--are pretty good since they're fresh off the tour and bring a new perspective to the commentary that the more mature talking heads have lost over the years and decades that they've been away from the game.

It's too bad TC tv doesn't credit them better when they start the show--watching the re-run of Monte Carlo : Halep vs Anisimova and couldn't catch the names of the two--one is Sophie somebody--the lady pundits this time of year are usually from Eastern Europe and have thick accents, but have great insights being fresh off the tour. As they comment year to year their accents soften--but, their command of the language is usually better then the native English speakers.

Looking forward to hearing Samuel "history's fastest serve" Groth commentating at the AO coming up soon--was sad to see him retire and happy he's still around now commentating--he did a GREAT job last year from OZ, wish we could hear him more at TC the rest of the year, he has great insights and a very professional style especially for a rookie announcer--most of the time the rookie announcers are just thrown in there after they retire from the tour and are barely intelligible.

Whoever the British woman is that does the courtside interviews at the ATP Cup, she is a disgrace.
She announced the players and captains when they walked onto court, and she pronounced Spain's captain as "Rog" instead of "Roig", as in she pronounced the G completely as if it was Roger....
And then after Rafa won they gave him the ATP Sportsmanship trophy, and she was interviewing him and she said "You only have to win 10 more to have as many as Roger....."
Where do they find these people? :)
Do they owe the BBC a favor or something, because why is a lazy/disrespectful British woman given this job when you have all those former Australian players that could do?

Didn't see the presentation, but I'm guessing it was either Annabel Croft or Sam Smith (probably the latter as I can't imagine the divine Annabel saying anything disrespectful). Which one was it?

Sam Smith for sure, I just looked on youtube for her :)
She must not have followed Rafa's career much if she couldn't pronounce Roig, he's been working with Rafa for a lot of years.

Thought it would be Sam. She once suggested to her co-commentator that all women players should be forced to speak English when chatting to their coaches at changeovers. Yeah, like REALLY Sam???

Most of the players on the tour do speak English--but if they don't then Tennis Channel should provide closed captioning. I can see why coaches might not want to tip off opponent's team on their tactics and strategies on the changeovers--I personally like the "net-side" chats as they're another learning opportunity for us on the other side of the tube--the men should do it too--free lessons for the rest of us!

I’ll take Mac, Carrillo, Gilbert, Cahill anytime over most of the others. The others make watching tennis very boring with their nasal voices or low energy commentary.

Watching tennis is supposed to be boring--if you want excitement watch golf or women's curling. Carillo is WAY too exciting--she needs to quit talking over the points especially during men's matches extolling sirena and wozzy's fan-girl relationship. Mary (the queen of the gratuitous guffaw) should stick with doing play by play at the AKC show and grand marshalling parades. There are so many other commentators who have much more knowledge of tennis and respect for the game in front of them I would prefer listening to like Pam Shriver. Give me Annecone or Arias over Mac and Mary anyday--they know something about tennis and don't push their own agendas--like their art openings and their mother's birthdays.

Mac is horrible, he thinks he knows everything. Always dismissive of women. anybody but him.

Will someone at Tennis Channel in Hollywierd please tell Mary Carillo to please STFU!--there's a tennis match going on in Brisbane between Bertens and Osaka that she's supposed to be watching and working AND she's been conducting an ongoing interview throughout with Jan-Michael Gambell about coaching--which would be interesting to listen to if it weren't going on over the tennis match which SHE obviously feels she is more important then--have some respect for the players and the sport. Mary STFU!--it's not all about YOU! JMG, keeps trying to bring it back to the match and she keeps interviewing him.

Nah, Shriver with her coaching commentary puts me to sleep and Arias is a bore. Arias also has that annoying nasal sounding voice. But, if it’s boring tennis commentary you want, well you got it.

Almost ALL tennis commentators are ex-players and not professional announcers that work in other sports, where the people behind the mikes are paid a lot more and have voices that are intelligible. Maybe if the CEO of Tennis Channel would pay for some diction lessons for his staff instead of bundling for his favorite politicians they would be more professional. Given that reality, I place substance over style, preferring knowledgeable commentary over the quality of voice. One of my favorites was an Eastern European lady announcer who had a very deep accent--but an EXCELLENT fluency of the English language and knowledge of tennis that made her quite endearing and informative.

Agassi would be a good commentator, but he's too busy with his school, and can't even commit to coaching so I doubt he'd commit to commentating :)

Yep. Shriver and Arias are by far the worst commentators in tennis. Both are unbearable.

Carillo gets on my nerves too. She could be good if she wasnt so into hearing herself talk and laughing at her own jokes. So self absorbed.

Gambill has been good. Courier and Knowles too. Wish Cahill would do some more commentary.

Lindsay Davenport gives great technical insight but still is a bit to much of a homer!! Steve Weissman lost me last night when he said Sloane could win the Aussie Open as she was getting demolished by a girl outside top 200!!!
