Hard Hitters vs. Spin Doctors

Which style of play is more effective in today's game?

It depends who's playing who. Everyone prefers playing a different type of player. Clearly spin doctors are more effective against Fed, but that doesn't mean they're more effective overall.

i personally play with spin and i dont find it hard to play hard hitters since you can use some of their pace but with other spin doctors, it gets you out of position but i guess it depends on how good of a hard hitter or spin doctor the other person is!

well it depends how fast the spin is. i rekon really strong spin will be better. But who says u cant have both?

Word. I have no problems hitting a very hard ball, even 100% flat.. And that said, I am one of those HEAVY spin doctors. Spin is your friend ;)

hard hitters are majority in the female side of play. i mean, almost anyone can hit hard but spinning requeires skill.

So that's why you're a spinmeister this week, Yut? Because of your outstanding ammount of skill?

I think spin doctors play "bad" tennis, and big hitters make for real matches with rallies and quality shots instead of nasty cheep shots.

though i make spin doctors those who only use spin, not spin to allow harder hitting i could not do it flat, but guys that only have a sort high slice is what i mean

I have to disagree with you ^

It's not "bad" tennis, it's "different" tennis...All types of play will work if you use them effectively. If you can't produce enough power to keep up with other hard hitters, it's natural to use spin.

thats why its in quotes in my mind one who is a junkball/spindoctor is not playing the same quality as others, but i am not dis counting its effectiveness

What about guys that hit rally-pace topspin, or slice, or sidespin, or short dropshots, or pinpoint lobs? Spin Doctors, ideally, should have many kinds of spin, not just slice.

spin doctors have the edge. im a hard hitter and we dont have enough consistancy versus the spin doctors at the 4.0 level.

I really don't like how it's an either/or question. But if it is one or the other, i think hard hitters are more effective.

I think you have to both skills - each has its own advantages. When playing a game - its all about how you match against your opponent. I normally will play with spin when I am hitting from the baseline, going for an off balance shot, hitting angle shot to the corner. I use flat power shots when I am hitting the ball early - preping to attack the net; use it for passing shots and swinging volleys.

Overall I think spin doctors have the advantage against hard hitters. I found that I can keep pace with hard hitters and knows how to play defense against it (have been pretty successful ). I struggled against spin doctors because I tend to loose patience because the pace is slower compared to power hitters - I am still working on this as we speak.

I like spin because of the height and lower the percentage of error especially during long rallys.

Who is considered a spin doctor and hard hitter in the pros?

Nadal is probably considered spin doctor yes? no? there is hard hitting power there, yes? no?

Where does Roddick fall?

Safin?

There's spin everywhere.

I think a hard hitter would be more effective only because with spin doctors/junkballers I find there is a lot more time to react.

Found this short tip from Tennis.com.
" Just clear the net".

Even at the highest levels of the game, matches are almost always decided by errors, not winners.

In other words, the player who makes the fewest mistakes usually wins. And there’s one simple way you can cut the number of errors you make nearly in half: Hit higher over the net.

Winning matches is as much about limiting your mistakes as it is about hitting powerful shots.

Big hitters. easy. believe me or not but pete was a spindoc and big hitter. they took a test on rpms in like 2002 pete was more than double anyone else. but you need to have a blend kinda.

nadal is not a spin doctor.

spin doctor: is someone that plays with all types of spins/pace as their main weapon. not just topspin or slice, but mixing everything up. Like a sitting slice one shot, and a skidding slice another. Someone that just hits a heavy topspin shot is not a spin doctor.

hard hitter: is someone who relays on winners and finishing points off with their strokes. They can still beat the ball and generate tons of spin at the same time.

Up to a certain level, even normally good players can be thrown off by wild spin and junk balls. These "spin artists" (to be polite) do not usually make it past the 4.0 or, at best, 4.5 level.

Part of the reason is that hard balls are not that difficult to return-- because they generally bounce to your confort zone, are fairly consistant and predictable and have enough pace so that you do not have to create your own pace from scratch.

And-- junk balls will tend to throw off a player who is not totally confident in their shot production.

But after the 4.0+ level, the spin/junk players become extremely rare. A player with good movement and confident strokes will beat them every time.

That is not to say that hard hitters should not, also, be masters of spin. You can hit hard with spin (obviously).

The fact that spindoctors is ranking so high shows that most people don't know what spindoctors are. Nadal is a bighitter not a spindoctor. Santoro is definetly a Spindoctor but who else is in the pro game, if thier dominating like so many said.

You are slightly misinformed. The RPMs Pete managed to impart onto his serve were beyond anything other pros could achieve. His groundstrokes, however, had less spin on them than quite a few players (Agassi, notably).

i am referring to people who do nothing else, all of those shots at good, but part of a array not at a rally ball though
