A new provisional singles ranking of no. 78 for Jannik Sinner after his victory over Sebastian Ofner earlier on Sunday in the final of the Ortisei Challenger in Italy. The young Italian went from 1-2 in the first to 6-2 and 2-0 in the second before his Austrian neighbour found some form to break back and lead 3-2. However, despite some good serving from Ofner, he was never allowed to settle by the rampant Italian who broke again at 4-all in the second set before serving out for another impressive title win.

The bottom half of the top 100 is usually very packed and a few good results will get a man through that quite quickly because of the transition from "easy" points in challengers to playing 9 1000 mandatory.

As for the fall, I couldn't tell you. But I somehow doubt he'll stay in America after the USO. Not sure he'll want to be away from his home base that long. I suspect he'll come back for a few good weeks of training and maybe play a couple of Italian challengers in September (including in my hometown of Florence... one can always hope).

Or, he may be in the top-80 by then. ;)

Meh, I was a couple of months off... Still, I guess you could say he had a decent year. ;)

To be fair, Gasket was as high as number 7 in the world, and won 15 titles. That should be considered a huge success for just about anyone. Gasquet himself talked about how the hype from his youth was detrimental to his development and general well-being. Here's the article (in French) from a wonky looking website. I thought it was from l'Équipe though...

It's the offseason. Time for some (no jinx) speculation. What do Sinners think would be a moderate and a good season for Jannik in 2020?

I'd say a moderate season would be a leap to about 30-40th, maybe six slam wins, and picking up a first singles title at 250 level.

A strong season would be a leap to the top 15, perhaps eight plus slam wins (including one second week run), and multiple singles titles including a deep (SF or better) Masters run or two.

A title before his birthday, a couple or more top 10 scalps, YE top 25 with one QF slam run would be my wish list.

I would say a semi-final in Rome, a second week on 2/4 Grand Slams , one or two ATP 250 wins with a season top rank of at least 30. He's capable of it. He has to if he really wants to be an ATG.

Finally we are closing in on Jannik’s first action in 2020. He is seeded #3 at the Canberra Challenger, top half, and earns the 1R bye. Another youthful European with good success on the 2019 Challenger circuit, Emil Ruusuvuori will play Ramkumar Ramanathan to advance to 2R vs Sinner.

Ruusuvuori it is. Good early test for Jannik.

Man, I'm bummed. Was really hoping to see him win even just one match prior to AO2020. Here's hoping for a manageable draw. I'd hate for him to start the season 0-3.

Soft 1R landing vs Q/LL to be determined. Probable 2R opponent is Shapo...as good a draw as can be expected. Potential SinFed in 4R.

My favorite Sinner will not have HCA in 1R after drawing Aussie qualifier Max Purcell.

Hoping for an easy win and for Shapo/Fucsovics to go very long.

Hoping for A QUICK Fucsovics beat down and an entertaining Shapo / Sinner match with Shapo prevailing but would also not be too unhappy to see Sinner advance. Well, a little unhappy because I do want to see how Shapo can do against Fed.

All elements seem to be conspiring against Sinner's first win of 2020.

Jannik was up 2 sets and a break, when Purcell kinda self-suspended play after feeling just a few drops fall on court (a very inept chair umpire displaying very little control of the situation). Upon resumption, Sinner seemed in a hurry to finish things off, which of course resulted in him promptly losing serve. Then, of course, the real rain came. Play suspended at 7-6 6-2 4-4 15-30 with Purcell serving (2nd serve)
