This is one surprisingly entertaining match. Never have watched Sandgren played. I thought he would be a push over with his lumberyard frame, yet he is now 2 sets ahead. This is beautiful. C'mon Fog, put up a fight! Do it!! Do it!

I was thinking of Johnny.

His mentality is the problem and always would have been. With Djokovic, Federer, Murray and Nadal around, I could never imagine him as the 5th guy :) Lacks focus more than anything else
Horse or carriage though. The guy puts a lot of pressure on himself because he can’t blister a serve for an easy point when he needs it or extend a rally with that extra reach.

In his case, that extra pressure manifests itself in his all too frequent meltdowns.

It’s a lot easier being that prototype tennis height, not 5’10”. You could be that short in the early Open Era and reach top 5 or even #1 (Laver, Connors). That’s not happening ever again with the bigger shots made easy with string and racquet technology.

Isn't Fognini same height as Ferrer?

If Fog emerges that will be three out of his four matches that went five. If he wins in a STB in five, he will be King of STBs with a 3-0 record in decider STBs.

Lleyton Hewitt was under 6'.

He was ranked #1, won Wimbledon, USO and runner up at the AO.

What on that list has the grub Dognini done?
Yes, same height. Was he using the cheating string, kinda in that transition era IIRC from Sampras to fedalovic. I tried poly once in my RD-Tour and cut it out the same day...absolutely killed the feel that racquet offered.

BTW, my first claim was only that Fog would have made top 5 with a few extra inches...not a world beater but a higher peak than finally making top 9 at age 32.

Fog complicating things again. He has had a real easy ride yet he is playing 5 setters through the draw like a journeyman. It's really unfortunate cause you would have liked to see him fresh for the final 8.

Ok so it seems as though today had been largely devoid of drama on the men's side, with straight sets wins for Djoko and Raonic? Seems as though Milos has been playing well, but his game has never troubled Novak, so that QF is only ever going to go one way - not that Cilic's record is much better, and he's not really playing well at the moment either.

Now, seems as though Tennys v Fog is starting to provide some of that drama though, as you might expect. Let us hope that Fed doesn't follow suit ...

(Sent from my mobile phone, apologies for typos!)

I haven’t watched Fognini in so long. I forget how easily he can produce power and redirect. His ballstriking is so clean.
He is still the only player besides Federer who could beat Nadal after 0-2 sets. In that match Nadal had no answer to exactly this kind of game for too long. To be fair, it was 2015 Nadal, but still a great achievement. He also beat Nadal on clay 3 times.

Off topic, but congrats to Fabio and Flavia after successful delivery of a baby daughter on December 23. The girl was named Farah and is the couple’s second child (older brother is Federico).

Now waiting for someone to reply that Sampras was using cheating frame compared to Laver/Pancho's wooden frame :happydevil:
It’s not a knock on poly. Everyone can choose to use it but it’s proven that the strings have changed the game dramatically in the last two decades. If that wasn’t fact, how could you have a small Belgian company like Luxilon go from making sewing thread in the 1950’s to reaching gold standard status in the string business and beating the Asian low-labor-cost synthetics that dominated the industry until the 90’s?
