All these damn players who love to extend rallies lol... Sandgren is weird though, you never really know what the hell he is going to do, dude plays points in so many ways.

this is how bad Sandgren is

if Federer loses this, he should officially spend the rest of his days on the futures circuit

I know some will think I'm trolling but I'm not. It will take either seismic shock or a strategic tank for Federer to lose this. I'm not going to say Federer would fear Djokovic, but if Djokovic were to get beaten by Raonic the drive and desire from Federer in this match would go up by umpteen degrees.

Picking Federer to take this in 3, maybe 4 sets if he's in the night session.

Lol.

Actually Sandgren seems like an okay player from my own personal eye test, but that's probably cause I only see him when he makes a half decent run. Feel like he should be top 50.

Obviously wanted Fabio to get the W today but Fabio hasn't ever put a dent into Rojer, so perhaps this would be the better match.

on the flip side, having only watched him when he's getting drubbed on the challenger tour, I'm appalled that he's somehow made two AO quarters.

Looks like he's been serving well here, though. But his baseline game has always been rather harmless.

I agree that raonic is Federers last hope. Not happening though. Djokovic is making the semis and will be ready to be Fed again!

Fed will probs play before Novak anyway. Djoko is due a night match!

When I've seen him he basically seems like 6/10 on most things but it's probably all or nothing with that guy. He was struggling with his hip vs Fog, so that might even hamper him vs Fed.

Tenez!

Sandgren has many of the strength of Thiem from the baseline, and Thiem is pretty much unbeatable for Federer these days.

This bodes ill for Rogé.

Not sure if you watched the Sandgren-Fog match. Some clean brutal hitting from both. Sandgren can easily pull off a Millman against this Fed.
Would not expect it.

The guy is a journeyman for a reason, and it'd be atrocious for even this vulnerable Fed to go life and death with the guy.

So this is very likely to be the day match. Does that help Fed? For the match itself, I would think so. The court plays faster during the day by all accounts.

But for the potential SF, having had some more experience of the court at night might not have been a bad thing.

More rest before the semis too though. So, on the whole, maybe not a bad thing.

(Sent from my mobile phone, apologies for typos!)

Why not a late bloomer? I don't think journeymen generally beat the #8 seed, a slam SF'ist and #12 seed "convincingly".

If journeymen are ranked 56, then tennis is in deep trouble.

He reached the quarters here couple of years ago too.

Then he went right back to doing what he does best: being a journeyman.

Only way Fed struggles is if he's abominably bad imho.

C'mon now, he lost to Chung who took out Djoko. Let's not be too harsh here.

There is potential. Just lacking consistency. Sounds like Stans early career.

After watching the Fognini match, it was a miracle that Sandgren won. Fognini had a mental breakdown (what else is new?) and he also played with absolutely zero variation. 99% rally balls with the same level of high pace. It was basically a hitting practice/workout between the two guys. I think Federer will vary things greatly (lots of slices, lots of variation in pace). Sandgren won't have any rhythm and will end up losing badly in straights.

Good for Sandgren to get this far. I'm sure he and his team needs the money. But the road ends here. He got super lucky in his draw... Berrettini, Querrey, Fognini. Three guys who are pretty much one-dimensional hard baseliners. He almost lost to Berrettini.

Federer in 3.

Fed should win this in 3. He'll then have the energy for Novak. He cannot afford to mug around in any of the sets. He (and his legs) needs a straight set win.

Dude there are probably top 20 players in this era that will be journeymen.

If we are defining them as good but not great players- aka not elite

I do have faith in Roger Federer. He played Novak Djokovic very close in the last two hard court matches and one he won. It's super tough for Roger Federer to beat Novak here but it's not impossible

This is djoko’s house. Fed has already struggled this tournament. The semis is as far as Fed will go. Djoko will be ready to end his run and make it 4-1 H2H at AO

This is the first time Roger Federer and Tennys Sandgren are playing. The winner will play SF against the winner of Novak Djokovic and Milos Raonic match.
so who's roger playing after this round ?? this easy prep could be the perfect prep for Novak. Fresh and healthy Federer can run right over Novak

Fully agree. Shame on Shapolavov and Berrettini who couldn't finish off "journeymen".
Depends how you define it. If it’s monetary based they arent journeymen. But if it’s thinking of them as good but not elite there’s quite a lot journeyman potential even in the top ranks. If berrettini and Shapo stayed on the same career trajectory their entire careers I’d personally consider them journeymen by how I interpret the definition .

Edit: like would someone like Jerzy Janowicz be considered one? Depends who you ask I suppose. He got all the way to number 14.

Also depends on if one considers it a disparaging term or not. I always took it as a blanket term for good/competent but not exceptional. Certainly not an overly endearing term but I never personally took it as outright negative either.

I only disagree with Roger or Novak or the so called neutral fans who say Roger Federer has zero chance to beat Novak Djokovic. That's not true at all..

Federer is a special player and still the grand slam leader. He’s a champion so yes I agree he has a chance in any match. However, except Nadal at RG this is probably the biggest challenge Fed has had in his whole career.
