He basically said, he would have preferred Thiem win because it would have been better for him (Nadal), but he congratulates Novak nonetheless, and that doesn't make him a hypocrite for preferring Thiem, but still congratulating Djokovic.

So he was being honest about admitting he would preffer Novak to lose, so that could stay number one in the world and with his 16 grand slams, rather than narrowing the gap to 2 grand slam titles and on top of that having Novak's perfect record in a grand slam final of his pet slam gotten screwed, whilst maintaing his own at Roland Garros intact? I don't see any reason why he should have supported Novak over Thiem in that Sunday final given all the implications...LOL

Nothing wrong with what Rafa said. He knows the threat Djokovic has when he gets on a roll. He knows djoko on 17 slams and back to no1. Djoko is the most difficult opponent nadal ever had and is biggest rival in GOAT debate. Plus deep down he doesn’t want Novak getting super confident again especially if he brings it on to clay, as that could put rafas french crown in danger.

Obviously, yes (I would have preferred Thiem's victory). You don't have to be a hypocrite, right? It would have been better for me personally if Thiem won. But, to be honest, I slept exactly as well the last two days. In that regard it doesn't matter if Dominic had won or if Novak (Djokovic) won. It is part of our sport. This tournament is particularly good at Novak. And right now he is, today, the best player in the world. This is what the numbers say. And the only thing that can be done is to congratulate him on another great success.
A while back at a Slam, I don't remember which year or which slam. Nadal and Djokovic made it to the semis, in opposite halves. They were asked separately which finalist they'd prefer to play.

one reason I can think of is Thiem finally getting the confidence in GS finals, cause his problem is obviously mental, so beating Djoker in the AO final could make him more of a threat if he were to make another RG final against Ralph. it’s the confidence Djokovic doesn’t lack.

No, what Federer said was that it was obvious Nadal and Djokovic would pass him and that he guesses it was “OK” because that’s the way sports go. He didn’t say “I would root for Djokovic over Thiem in a grand slam finals”. Obviously, Federer wouldn’t be as straightforward about it as Rafa, but let’s not act like Federer is the “hypocrite”. I don’t like Rafa using the word “hypocrite”’ there anyways.

To add to this further. Federer’s belief that he will be passed by both Djokovic and Nadal, thinking it is inevitable, gives him less incentive to root against them in a final. I said “less” not “no”. Nadal on the other hand is arguably the most likely to win the slam race and should obviously be rooting against Djokovic in a slam final, as he is the biggest threat besides myself as I’ve been training hard.

Djokovic's performance last week against Thiem in the finals of the AO would get him slaughtered if he brought that same level against Nadal in the finals on Phillip Chatrier at Roland Garros. Djokovic would be very lucky to even win a set playing like that.

Maybe, but not sure it is entirely a mental problem not beating Nadal in an RG final, because nobody has ever done it.
Likewise Nole in an AO final.
But gaining confidence is a big thing, as we saw that with Andy when he finally won a Slam.
