What a weak start of season for Tsitsipas and Medvedev

Among the 4 players who could potentially compete with the Big-3 this year, I thought Tsitsipas and Medvedev were above Thiem and Zverev, but it seems like the opposite is happening.

Tsitsipas lost 2 of his 3 matches at the ATP cup. Only 1 win in Australia (w.o. in 2nd round) and straight sets against Raonic in the third round. Now 1 win (without glory) in Rotterdam and defeat in 2 sets today. It looks more and more like Zverev in 2019 after he won the ATP finals.

Medvedev isn't as bad but after seeing his second semester in 2019, it's very disappointing (widely below a World #5 should expect) When we see the players who beat him in Australia (Djokovic and Wawrinka) it's more understandable, but his total of points is weak. And now defeat in straight sets against Posposil.

Could also add Shapopalov in this list, though he hasn't accomplished as much as Tsitsipas and Medvedev yet. His level in Paris and in the ATP cup was impressive, now it's a complete disaster (3 defeats in a row)

If you thought the trio DNF would be in jeopardy in 2020, I think they just lost 2 of the 4 biggest threats. Medvedev and Tsitsipas sure won't progress higher than #5 and #6 with these results. If anything, they'll regress. Zverev is still an enigma at the moment. He played well in Melbourne but I'm not convinced yet. He has yet to show that he can be stable in every Slams and M1000. The only REAL threat for the Big-3 is Thiem at this point. Let's see if he can find more stability and truly compete with them in the long run.

The WTF curse is real.
Agreed, hopefully RAFA doesn't play that joke of a "tournament" again.

They're all basically irrelevant until they win slams. Nobody remembers or cares about Lendl's 1982 season when he won 15 tournaments, but went slamless. All these 4 guys (especially Med and Thiem) routinely choke in big matches. Tsits beating Roger at the AO or Thiem beating Novak at RG are great wins, but they never follow up those wins by winning the tournament. There's no excuse that all aren't dominating the tour when the only competition are a 38 year old, a 33 year old and a 32 year old.

It is inconsistencies like this which is allowing the old guard to stay at the top of the rankings. These guys simply cannot back up any decent or half decent runs, which then prevents them from rising further up the rankings.
You hurt Dominic Thiem's feelings.

Now watch him win the first round in Rio.

They are all inconsistent...

Remember Zvezev winning wtf over Federer and Djokovic and doing nothing great whole next year?

Tsitsipas finished great last year and is struggling this year...

Thiem is most consistent, maybe because is most expirinced, but failed to win slam... He is closest to that goal of mentioned players...

Medvedev was most consistent in second half of last year, but couldn't mantain it this year... I think he will be back during year...

Other are not worth of mentioning till do anything more remarkable...

Other words I can see, at best, they win one slam this year...

Medvedev is a one season wonder. Titsypas will likely improve through the year. I wouldn’t be surprised if he took his foot off the gas big time after winning the WTF, and is now playing catch up.

If they perform like expected, this era suddenly becomes exciting and super memorable (even if they ultimately lose all the big tournaments), as opposed to what it becomes if they do not: the aging-Djokovic and aging-Nadal show.

Tennis needs Tsitsipas, Medvedev, Thiem and Zverev to become good enough to consistently beat the players they should beat.
