I played since i was 4-5 but never watched it. They did a great movie on that kid chess player.
I like using the pawn in front of the king so i can get the queen and bishop in action (possible fools mate if they are bad like @Bartelby )

Did you actually play him? I've been playing someone I met on here for years who will remain anonymous unless he decides to chime in. He is annoyingly good but I still enjoy it.

Nah, i played my grandpa and dad, i just like to have fun with bart
I dont play much anymore but still have my board. Gotta say it helps point construction in tennis. Lets your mind be ready for one of the many things your opponent can do, having your next potential move/shot ready. If he does this, im doing that type thinking. Then tier them in order of your benefit.

I played a few chess tournaments when I was younger. Hit a wall in the 1600s and was never able to break 1700.

Our club had no masters, but several experts. Most members were in the A B C categories. In 1991 I wrote a small booklet that documented my progress titled "From Class C to Class A in Fourteen Months". At that time I played in tournaments almost every weekend. All the clubs that were around then have disbanded due to online play. Sad really.

My player on the Sims games has been grandmaster for many years. In real life, I'm not smart enough.
Chess does interest me. I hear the top names and look them up then I might watch some youtube clips.

It's a very old ranking/class rating. My rating high was 1,542 which was Class C. This was back in the 1970s. I stopped playing chess tournaments back then because I was coming home with tobacco all over my clothes.

I had a friend at the Boyleston Chess Club (Boston) that became an International Master. During tournaments, we used to play table tennis outside the chess hall. I think that Harry Lyman was rated pretty high too. I could have done better but moved on to tennis, going to school fulltime and working fulltime.

I used to be into it. 1200 is in my head but it could be wrong.
Been years but I just went to chess.com and beat the computer playing white (which is probably set on easy)

1800+ is fairly competitive. I'd say like top 5%. Maybe better?
A 1000 rated player could fairly easily demolish someone who plays chess once in a blue moon. Chess tournaments unfortunately just require way too much time. Also the cost. I can't believe my mom was willing to pay for me to go to so many open tournaments. I think I can count on one hand the number of prizes I actually won.

1,800 requires work and maintenance. 600-800 is a beginner.
My highest rating was 1,542 but I drew a Class A player once. I played an oddball closed opening - one of those where you lock up the position with pawn structures. Back then, most players preferred open games. He blundered trying to break open the position and I had a won game. I later blundered and he drew the position.

The last tournament I ever played I ended up getting 5 draws out of 5 matches lol They were all higher rated than me, but it was still really annoying.

On chess.com, my blitz rating is 1575 (haven't played a rated game in a few years). It says I'm 93.3 percentile. So I'd think 1850 could be a little higher than 95% but that should be pretty close to the mark.

You have to do more than play games to get better. You have to memorize openings, memorize endgame patterns, study middle-game strategy, learn tactics, etc.
You don't get better and better and better in tennis just by playing. Even Federer has had coaches.

Right. This commitment is something I didn't feel worth it in the end for me, not that I wanted to go anywhere much in chess.

Played quite a bit in my teens and 20s but not played in the past 40 years... except for a few vs computer programs. Chess club in college for a bit.
Played visualization chess (similar to blindfold chess) with a couple of buddies a number of times. That is, chess with no physical board or pieces. We would get more than a dozen moves into game, usaully 13 to 15 moves, before we started disagreeing about where the pieces were on the board.
(I'm certain that chess masters could easily get further than this). Nonetheless, it was a great mental exercise for us. BTW, we were using the old descriptive notion for this exercise rather than the more modern algebraic notation (which became the standard sometime in the 1970's, I believe).
